The Montgomerys and Armstrongs – Book 2

About the book: Released March 19, 2013

Genevieve McInnes is locked behind the fortified walls of McHugh Keep, captive of a cruel laird who takes great pleasure in ruining her for any other man. Yet when Bowen Montgomery storms the gates on a mission of clan warfare, Genevieve finds that her spirit is bent but not broken. Still, her path toward freedom remains uncertain. Unable to bear the shame of returning to a family that believes her dead or to abandon others at the keep to an imposing new laird, Genevieve opts for the peaceful life of an abbess. But Bowen’s rugged sensuality stirs something deep inside her that longs to be awakened by his patient, gentle caress—something warm, wicked, and tempting.

Bowen seizes his enemy’s keep, unprepared for the brooding and reclusive woman who captures his heart. He’s enchanted by her fierce determination, her unusual beauty, and her quiet, unfailing strength. But wooing her will take more than a seasoned seducer’s skill. For loving Genevieve, he discovers, means giving her back the freedom that was stolen from her—even if it means losing her forever.

Review:

Highlander Most Wanted begins right after Never Seduce a Scot. Bowen, along with a contingent of Montgomerys and Armstrongs, is sent to the McHugh Keep to deal with the aftermath of Ian McHugh having kidnapped his brother and Laird’s wife, Eveline. Immediately upon his arrival at the McHugh Keep, he and his entire group encounter a small boy at the entrance of the keep. And, almost immediately a beautiful, mysterious woman appears to shield the boy and confront the Mongtomerys. Bowen is instantly intrigued, especially when she, Genevieve turns and he sees the horrid scar on the side of her face. Genevieve holds her ground then returns to the McHughs in the courtyard.

Once Bowen and the others enter the keep, he ascertains, rather quickly, that Genevieve is not well liked among her clansmen. She does, however, have one who is fierce in her support, Taliesan. To say that Bowen is livid over the fact that most of the male McHughs have fled, including their laird, and left the others with no real ability to defend themselves is the understatement of the year. And, once Genevieve’s story unfolds, Bowen is furious as to how anyone, male or female, could have held any of what happened to her against her. Seems, he has his work cut out for him. Because he already knows………… Genevieve will be his.

I always fear that those who read my reviews of Maya Banks’ stories think I am just being melodramatic. But, I’m not. NO ONE, in my humble opinion, writes these historicals like her. I always go into her new books with a bit of apprehension. After all, there is no way to top the previous book, right? 110% wrong!! I’ve said it before, I do not know how in the hell she does it. The way the battle scene plays out was genius. And, just the fact that Bowen doesn’t know for a little while what exactly happened makes it all the better. And, the way Genevieve finally comes to realize that she is entitled to be loved, feel protected and just be happy is amazing. To see her rise above the atrocities that were so egregiously heaped upon her will make anyone’s heart swell with pride.

I loved how the Montgomerys and the Armstrongs acted as one. And, hey, who would complain about more hot Scots?? Bowen is the quintessential hero. Strong, loving and oh so loyal to those he loves. Once again, I worship at the alter that is Maya Banks and can’t wait for the next installment!!

  1. Awesome review, Vickie. I can tell how much you love Maya and her books. I have to say this story sounds great, and maybe since this is only book 2, I should jump quickly on the bandwagon. This is not a series that picked up after another?

    BTW, I love this cover.

    • This series is after the phenomenal McCabe brothers trilogy Ms. Barb. Although not connected, I would strongly urge anyone to read those three books prior. Simply because as Vickie stated no one compares to Maya Banks in this genre…and I have read ALOT of Scottish historicals. 🙂

  2. I read the first book in the series and it didn’t disappoint. Love Eveline and who would’nt want their man to scream at the top of his voice that he loves you. Looking forward to reading about Gwen and everything she went through with those horrible father and son. Picked up the Mccabe Trilogy and looking forward to reading.

  3. Vickie I happen to 100% agree with you on Maya and her talent for historicals! Ilove her smut reads too, but the way she writes my beloved highlanders makes me melt! Haven’t gotten to this series yet but they are anxiously waiting for me on the ereader … perhaps it’s time to BUMP! LOL GREAT REVIEW! 🙂

    R 🙂

  4. Great review Vickie. I absolutely loved this book. One name Bowen Montgomery, swoooooooooon. I loved Bowen, what a character. I want my own Bowen Montgomery. I can’t wait for the next book. I loved Brodie in this one and can’t wait for his story. I never get tired of reading these amazing Highlander books.

  5. Beautiful review Ms. Vickie. I share your deep love for Maya Banks. Although the McCabe brothers trilogy is utterly phenomenal…and the ending of Alaric’s story had me sobbing like only one other book in literature has ever made me do…Never Seduce a Scot completely destroyed all three of those books. It was THAT good. And so, Maya Banks is auto-buy for me in this genre.

Typically the hero draws me more than the heroine in any books I read. It is a given. Yet Eveline stole the show all the way for me (and Graeme was wonderful). Honestly, she is hands down the most inspiring female protaganist I have ever read about. She moves me nearly as much as my beloved Kahlan Amnell, who is my utmost favorite heroine in all of fiction.

I could not WAIT for Highlander Most Wanted….yet was very wary when I read the blurb. Traumatized heroine’s are just not romantic for me. I spent much of the book just sick, and sad and angry at what Genevieve had suffered. I cannot rate this book as high as the other four I have read from Maya. Not that Bowen and Genevieve werent amazing. They were. I just wish that Genevieve had not been so terribly terribly traumatized, and that some time had passed. My heart was gutted for how dead she was inside when Bowen found her.

(Gawd shut up Miranda…) Again, phenomenal review, and I am so incredibly excited for Highland Ever After, I have loved the proud, brave, fearless Brodie since he was introduced in the first installment. And Genevieve’s champion, the tender hearted, will of iron Taliesan stole my heart. Were it that we all had such loyalty in our friends.

    • Thanks Miranda!!! And, even though I love this particular series, I can’t imagine anything ever topping the McCabe Trilogy, namely Alaric’s book!! OMG!!!!!! I too sobbed like a crazy person!!! LOL!!!!

With that said, I’m not a huge fan of traumatized heroines either, but, I understand why they did what they did to Genevieve. She had to tie it all together and she was the catalyst for that. I know it could have been done differently, but I thought the way the books connected was great.

And, I can’t wait for the next one either!! I loooooooove Talie!!!!!!!
