REVIEW:DEFYING EVIL is the first instalment in Abbie Roads contemporary, adult BLOOD IS THICKER THAN dark, paranormal, romantic suspense series. This is thirty year old, FBI consultant Cain Killian, and Mercy Ledger’s story line.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there will be triggers for more sensitive readers

Told from several omniscient third person perspectives including Cain and Mercy DEFYING EVIL follows in the wake of a murder similar to murders committed years before by a serial killer and Cain’s father Adam Killian. With only one known survivor, Cain wants to ask Mercy Ledger about the circumstances of her family’s murder but will quickly discover that all is not well in Mercy’s life. On the run together, Cain and Mercy are at odds with which direction to turn the death of several people connected to our couple’s life reveals a possible copy-cat looking pushing the buttons of Mercy and Cain.

Cain Killian grew up the son of a serial killer, a young man thrown into the pits of his father’s depravity, and as such, Cain has the ability to ‘read’ blood. With his ability, Cain is an asset to the FBI, and is called in when his special circumstances are required. Mercy Ledger lost everything to Adam Killian but in the face of evil, developed her own ability to sense when darkness is near ..but..for all intents and purposes, our couple are more often than not the targets of madmen, leaving one or both fighting for their life, therefore I question Mercy’s true psychic powers.

The relationship between Cain and Mercy begins as a rescue. A close friend is desperate to protect our story line heroine but Cain may be too late when evil has already inflicted the damage to Mercy Ledger. On the run, and in hiding, Cain and Mercy will dance around their attraction but Mercy believes she is not good enough, and Cain struggles with the darkness in his past. The $ex scenes are intimate.

There is a large ensemble cast of dark, questionable and interesting characters including Cain’s mentor/foster father/ friend and FBI agent MacNeil Anderson, agent Dolan Watts, Dr. Payne, and Cain’s father Adam Killian. The requisite evil has many faces.

DEFYING EVIL is a story of power and control, obsession and madness, acceptance and love, all set in the same vein as the author’s BEAUTIFUL NIGHTMARE series, where each investigator has some psychic powers. The premise is intriguing, dramatic and edgy; the romance is intense; the characters are broken , abused and desperate.

REVIEW:SHATTERED DREAMS is the third instalment in Abbie Roads’ contemporary, adult FATAL DREAMS paranormal, romantic suspense series. This is police department consultant Thomas Brown, and former inmate Helena Grayse’s story line. SHATTERED DREAMS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for back story. SHATTERED DREAMS is the re-release of the author’s NEVER LET ME FALL (Fatal Dreams Series).

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may not be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from several third person perspectives including Thomas and Helena SHATTERED DREAMS follows the building relationship between police department consultant Thomas Brown, and former inmate Helena Grayse. Ten years earlier Helena was sentenced to prison for a crime she did not commit but Helena found herself the target of a prison gang, a gang determined to end her life. Upon release from prison, a battered and battle -scarred Helena headed back to the family home, a home now owned by consultant Thomas Brown. When the attacks against Helena’s life continue on the outside, Thomas is determined to protect the woman that literally calls to his heart, a woman with whom he is psychically tethered. What ensues is the building but struggling relationship between Thomas and Helena, and the potential fall-out as Thomas’s past is determined to own him body and soul, a malevolent past that is closely connected to the woman he loves.

Thomas Brown has a special ability of which only a few are aware. With his ability to ‘read’ and ‘see’ the shadow of death, Thomas is surprised when Helena’s aura is a beacon of colour and light, colour he hasn’t seen in too many years. Helena has survived the prison abuse but was unaware of the how and why. Keeping to herself, remaining quiet in the face of danger and death, Helena continues to be targeted for sins of the past.

The relationship between Thomas and Helena is one of immediate attraction. Thomas knows immediately, with one touch, that Helena is his soulmate -her nearness allows Thomas to see colours and light; his touch heals that which would have killed a lesser human. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

SHATTERED DREAMS is a story of heartbreak and pain; family and loss; betrayal and vengeance. The premise is dark, gritty and raw; the romance is fated; the characters are broken, damaged and lost.

•••••••••

REVIEW: SAVING MERCY is the first instalment in Abbie Roads’s contemporary, adult FATAL TRUTH paranormal, romantic suspense series. This is FBI profiler Cain Killion, and Mercy Ledger’s story line.

NOTE: SAVING MERCY contains scenes of graphic violence, blood shed and murder, and may not be appropriate for all readers.

Told from several third person points of view including Cain and Mercy SAVING MERCY focuses on Cain Killion, the son of a serial killer, and Mercy Ledger-one of Cain’s father’s victims -a woman who survived but finds herself victimized over and over again. Twenty years earlier Mercy’s entire family was brutally slaughtered by Adam Killion and in the ensuing years, Mercy has struggled to find her place in society until the day she found herself locked in a mental institution against her will. Enter Cain Killion, Adam Killion’s son, and the man who will fall in love with one of his father’s victims. What ensues are Cain’s attempts to save Mercy from a potential copy –cat killer; a stalker who uses Mercy for his own perverted pleasure; and the fall out from a killer’s need for power and control.

Cain Killion has the ability to ‘read’ blood-a killer’s thought and ideas whenever he touches the blood of one of the victims. His psychic abilities leave our hero in a world of hurt and pain, and not without some difficult side effects he’d rather not endure but as an FBI profiler Cain’s ‘powers’ can be used as a positive when on the hunt for the criminally responsible, making amends for his father’s past. His connection to Mercy Ledger comes on the twentieth anniversary of her family’s murders, and a string of killings linking directly back to Mercy and Cain find our couple on the run, not knowing whom to trust or where next to turn. The overwhelming darkness and demons continue to ride Cain Killion-a man whose own father destroyed everything he touched. Mercy is not without some psychic abilities of her own, and together they will form a powerful team but not before Mercy is targeted by someone from her past.

SAVING MERCY is an intense, tragic and alarming look at one man’s ability to destroy everything in his path. There are moments of passion and romance, atrocious violence and abhorrent acts, betrayal, redemption and vindication. The premise is suspenseful and disturbing; the characters are broken, destructive and tormented; the romance is fated, profound and heartbreaking. SAVING MERCY is a dark, deadly, fiery and tense story; a well written psychological thriller about a tortured hero, and the woman with whom he will fall in love.

Developing the hero/heroine with Abbie Roads

I’m a write-by-the-seat-of-my-pants author. That means I don’t plot out my books and I honestly don’t know what’s going to happen from one scene to the next. I’ve tried plotting and planning and the thing I’ve discovered… If I know what’s going to happen, then I don’t want to write it. I get a weird writer’s high from all the unexpected things that happen on the page.

And I’m the same way with developing my heroes and heroines. I’ve sat down and filled out complicated character development forms. I’ve spent weeks exploring every single facet of a character and you know what happened when I tried to write that character? I couldn’t write him. I couldn’t force that character to be the things I said he was going to be.

I wish I could plot a story. I wish I could plan out my characters. But it’s just not how my process works.

Here’s how I develop my characters:

I write. And write. And write. I keep writing until I feel that spark that interests me. Then I delete all the crap I wrote before. I follow that spark and let it guide me. It doesn’t always lead me in a good direction, so I delete a lot.

The first one hundred pages of my books are always the hardest for me. It takes me a long time to find my characters in writing and re-writing—usually six to eight months to get those pages right. The rest of the book comes easier after that. Thank God.

A weird thing I’ve noticed about my heroes and heroines is that they all tend to be introverted and crave to live isolated lives. Maybe I shouldn’t admit this, but those are purely Abbie Roads traits. I’m a super-deep introvert, but I can become extroverted sounding when I’m excited about something—it just exhausts me. I yearn to live in isolation from other people. I want my home to be in a place where I can walk outside naked and there’s no one around for miles to see. Not that I’m a nudist or anything. It’s just the idea of being able to do that that appeals to me! Lol.

QUESTION

I have a question for the readers: What kinds of heroes/heroines do you like best? Are they a reflection of your own personality?

Except…there is the man in her feverish dreams, the strangely beautiful man who beckons her to freedom and wholeness. And when he comes, if he comes, it will take all their combined fury and faith to overcome a madman bent on fulfilling a deadly prophecy.

Review:

Race the Darkness by Abbie Roads is a dark paranormal romance story in her new Fatal Dreams series.  Xander Stone, our hero, is an investigator that helps the police department solve crimes.  Xander is not your normal investigator, as he has the ability to hear people thoughts. He was struck by lightning years before, leaving scars on his face and body, and also suffers pains in his head with the constant hearing of voices.   For years, he has been ignoring a cry for help from a woman, who he has no idea who or where she is.

Isleen Walker, our heroine, waits to die, to be put out of her misery.  It has been 8 years since she was kidnapped with her grandmother and  tortured daily.  She is on the brink of death, when Xander accidently finds and rescues her.  He uses his healing powers to make her better, and brings her and the grandmother to the hospital, where they will be under police protection. Xander learns that Isleen has her own powers;  she sees visions of things that are about to happen in the future.

Together they will embark to find out who is responsible for her kidnapping.  A slow build romance will follow with two people that are each suffering badly from their disabling abilities. They both feel the magic that pulls them to each other.  Will they survive the madness surrounding them?

What follows is an interesting, somewhat exciting and very dark story line, filled with madness, religious sadistic fanatics, and death.  This was a well written story with a different theme, but it was too dark for me to really enjoy.  I have read dark stories, but in this case you need to be invested in the characters to be able to enjoy the story.  In Race the Darkness, I just did not feel the chemistry between Xander and Isleen, nor did I like any of the other characters.  If you are into dark paranormal romances, you may want to give this a try.
