“Evermore Ranch,” she read aloud.

“I hope this won’t upset your plans?”

“Would it matter? I signed a service contract that included a non-disclosure agreement. Even if I had a problem, I couldn’t tell a soul and I’ve promised you two weeks of my time.”

He chuckled softly. “Yes, two weeks to do my bidding.”

She almost choked at the thought of doing his bidding. “What the heck have I gotten myself into with you, Mr. McLemore? Exactly what type of office do you run?”
His expression changed. Sharpened. “Strictly business. Look, Dr. Rodriguez, we’ve gotten off on the wrong foot.”

“Wrong foot … the whole body is a problem, sir,” she hissed.

He smiled broadly, reassuring her. “Let’s discuss this later. This isn’t the correct time or place. Don’t you have to help the bride or something?”

“Yes. As a matter of fact, I do. I don’t know what you think you’ve contracted, but I’ll only supply you with vet services. As long as you understand that fact, there’s nothing more to discuss.”

“Well, there is. In the service agreement, there’s a provision that we need to discuss before you’re allowed access to the ranch barn and stable sites. So, either we can do it later or when you arrive in Texas. But until you and I have a little sit-down and get a few things ironed out, there won’t be any work for you to do directly. I’ve got a ranch to run, and I don’t have time to play games. I’ve already spent enough time finding a vet.” His eyes glittered and dropped to her mouth. “If you think I’m about to waste more time because you’ve got second thoughts, Dr. Rodriguez, the next communication you’ll have from Evermore Ranch will be from my attorneys. Had I known who you were before, believe me, I wouldn’t have … I’d never let the situation get away from me.”

Oh, this was rich. “Away from you. I’d say it got out of control. But that’s on your side of the table. Fine. I’ll honor my service contract. You’re right about one thing. The only thing of interest to me is treating your cattle. Once the job is done, I’ll be only too happy to leave you in peace and we can go our separate ways.”

Up close, his eyes shone sherry-colored. A muscle flexed along his jaw. His masculine scent of leather, smoke, and wood filled her head. The hard set of his mouth didn’t resemble the man from before. He’d done just as he’d promised, shutting one door, and leaving in place a man who didn’t look as if he enjoyed playing games. No this version of Matt McLemore had a locking gaze and if looks could kill, she was a goner.

“I’m glad we understand one another then, Dr. Rodriguez. I expect to meet with you tomorrow at your convenience. Our relationship will be strictly business, if that’s what got you in such a dither.”

Guest Post-White and Fuscia

Susan: Huge thank you so much for having me over to The Reading Cafe! I’m absolutely thrilled to be here 🙂

TRC: What is a tidbit that not a lot of people know about you?

Susan: Hmmm. I’ve had a few interesting jobs. Legal secretary, bartender, then I graduated college. Biology special ed teacher.

I met my husband he’s an environmental engineer. For a while, I’d get called to do evaluations and take lab samples within the crawlspace. You know the space under a house or buildings. I’ve seen all sorts of things crawling around under there. Snakes, spiders, lizards, mice, rats, dogs, big dogs, a fox, raccoons. Did I mention snakes? One place, I would have sworn had buried bodies or something really weird was buried. Maybe only my imagination. Many times, the spaces are so small a man can’t fit. So, I’m tall but thin and was able to squeeze in through the vent. Crazy times.

TRC: What writing project are you currently immersed within?

Susan: Juggling is the more like the method of work I believe writers employ. LOL.
• Releasing: Picture Perfect, the story of Carolina’s cousin, Cynthia “Sam” Cainwright is releasing. *nail biting jitters*
• Final edits for a new genre. I’m releasing an erotica series Naughty Nights and the first book is Taken is going through the wringer.
• Writing: Don’t Tease Me, paranormal erotic romance featuring a witch and a wolf.
• Brainstorming: Shotgun Wedding. Cory, Matt’s sister’s story.
So you can see, a writer constantly has stories in various degrees of evolution. Phew!

TRC: When you aren’t writing where would we find you?

Susan: Outside in the garden. Now, it’s the perfect season for planting. And watching the return of plants. Everything from herbs to flowers to Japanese Maple. Gardens are a wonderful way to connected to the Earth and time. I share a garden with deer, rabbits, and a rather large ground hog. I can’t say they’re much help but I do like the company.

TRC: People wish: Name three people you would love to spend the day with, if you got the chance?

Susan: I’m thinking of people alive. Hard to narrow down to three. Here goes.

Well, Joyce Carol Oates of course. I’m a huge fan of hers. I think she’s absolutely genius.
And Terry Gross, host of Fresh Air from National Public Radio. She’s interviewed so many incredible people. I’d love to hear her stories. Christopher (Ronald) Walken. He’s my absolute favorite personality. I could watch him talk for hours. His mannerisms are weirdly captivating.

TRC: Do you have an author who has caught your attention?

Susan: YES!! Not one but several. I’ll stick to the one I’m presently reading. Crazy hot insanely fast, page-burning read. Madeline Shehanne. Undeniable. The way she deals with different POVs, the off-the-wall plot. It’s so outside the box, it just blows me away.

TRC: What was your favorite scene to write in Tempted by Trouble?

Susan: Oh golly. The love scenes were challenging and thought provoking. But I think the one scene I loved the most the ending when Matt is running through the airport.

TRC: Why a western? You cross several subgenres.

Susan: I didn’t know much about westerns and then my husband was set to go to Diamond Don’s a motocross race in Texas. I started researching about Texas and found, man this place is out-of-control DIVERSE. I backtracked and read some westerns and fell in love with this genre. The men are hot, fierce, and loyal as hell to their families. The women are smart, sassy, and totally into their men and families. I guess I love the idea of super close nit huge family and passionate, passionate romance.

Oh and BTW, my husband came in third this year at Diamond Don’s. YEE HAW for motocross!!

So there you have it The Reading Café. And thank you so much for this opportunity

About The Book:   Release Date April 1, 2013

When a woman is the magnet for the wrong man, it takes a bad boy to break old habits.

Carolina Rodriguez is a large-animal veterinarian on a mission to escape South Florida. Willing to do just about anything, she accepts a job in Annona, Texas over the internet from a family connection. At her cousin’s wedding, she runs into-literally-a handsome Texan in the parking lot. Matt McLemore is more than gorgeous, he’s Carolina’s new boss, and needs her help to determine why his cattle keep dying.

Matt proposes to introduce Carolina to his family as his girlfriend, giving her the opportunity to work and stay at his ranch without arousing his family’s suspicion. Only when she learns she’s the last chance to help save his family’s cattle reputation (given his father’s refusal to listen to reason and modern genetic testing) does she agree to act the part of his girlfriend.

Matt’s instantaneous attraction to Carolina is an excruciating temptation but a roll in the hay may prove too volatile to handle. He attempts to keep a hands-off relationship until she arrives on his ranch and she is too hot to resist.

Carolina refuses to admit Matt’s raw sexuality is more than overpowering or that she’s the least bit tempted by a smooth talking bad boy. By the time the lab reports comes back, they’ve explored every inch of each other. All of a sudden, this fiery affair is more than just a fling. When a past flame threatens to overwhelm their newfound romance, Matt must find a way to stake his claim to Carolina’s heart before it’s too late.

Review:

(fanning self with her cowboy hat) Matt McLemore is one damn fine cowboy and can be my bad boy any day!! If you are looking for a book with a drop dead gorgeous, swoon-worthy alpha male lead then Susan Arden’s Tempted by Trouble is just the book for you. Being a cowboy on top of all that is just the icing on the cake for this little cowgirl at heart. 😉 I must admit at first I thought Matt was going to be a real arrogant jerk-type character I would want to slap across the head at every turn. Boy was I wrong. That whole macho bravado act he first shows to Carolina is just that, an act. He’s hot, good looking and pretty much sex on a stick and knows it, so he uses it to protect his already damaged heart. It isn’t until we learn more about Matt that underneath it all he’s a good man, with a good heart and knows how to treat a woman. His past played a number on his heart and he doesn’t want to go down that path again, until he meets Carolina and everything in his world is turned upside down.

For this little cowgirl at heart this book hit all the high notes. I love a good story set on a ranch with good looking cowboys, a little drama and romance. It’s a quick read, but the drama begins on the first page, draws the reader in from the get go, and there’s no turning back till the last page. For me, that’s something I enjoy in my reads, being pulled into the story from the first page. When this happens I know I won’t be able to stop till I turn that last page. The one thing I was worried about was that the author wouldn’t have enough time to delve into everything(cattle/breeding issues, ex boyfriend, romance angst between the two leads, etc) However, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Ms Arden does a wonderful job of blending it all together to fit into a neat tidy story that just flows from beginning to end.

The issues with the cattle and breeding that Carolina is called into handle is well written and helps to draw the reader further into the story. Throughout the whole ordeal we get to see both Carolina and Matt try to come to terms with everything that is happening on the ranch and between them. There’s this push and pull chemistry between them that at times caused me some angst of my own, as I wanted to slap both upside the head and tell them; “look, stop being stubborn and just open your hearts to one another already” aaaaaaa!!!!. This whole back and forth thing can be a total pain in the butt sometimes for me as I read a book, but in this case only added to the already combustible chemistry between Matt and Carolina and gives us a clearer understanding of where to two characters are coming from.

It takes some time but finally, yes finally Matt and Carolina both are able to put their pasts to rest so they can have a future together. Let me tell you, Ms. Arden had me worried for a little while near the end, what, with the arrival of Carolina’s past flame, and neither Matt nor Carolina having the courage to own up to their feelings for each other, if it would all work out or not. Thankfully it did, but I would have preferred a little more after that final scene. Just something more to really tidy it up and make it more complete for my liking. It’s just how I’m wired when it comes to my books. Yes, I like a good declaration of love between the lead characters, but I also like a little more completion, like a short epilogue that shows them a few weeks, or months down the road etc. What can I say, I’m a sucker for romance and the happily every after stuff. 😉

Tempted by Trouble is a perfect title for this book. Carolina is definitely tempted by Matt, and he’s definitely trouble where she’s concerned thanks to her past relationships. However, it goes both ways as Carolina is also trouble for Matt and his already damaged heart. It’s a good, quick, fun, and steamy read. Both characters are well written and the chemisty between Matt and Carolina is off the charts. Keep a cold glass of water within reach well reading this one ladies. 😉 If you like a good romance, cowboys and alpha men, then this one’s a must read. Happy trails to you and happy reading.
