THE ASSASSIN AND THE EMPIRE (Throne of Glass YA e-novella #4) by Sarah J Maas

THE ASSASSIN AND THE EMPIRE is the fourth novella in Sarah J Maas’ Throne of Glass novella series. Released July 2012, The Assassin and The Empire follows the continuing saga of Celaena Sardothien and her quest to free herself from the tyranny and rule of her ex-friend and mentor Arobynn Hamel-The King of the Assassins.

Celaena and Sam Cortland were now roomies.  Not quite lovers, their years of friendship had blossomed into love, and it was only a matter of time before they took the next step.  But will little money and no contracts, the pair decided it was time to leave the city of Rifthold and start a new life and business as Assassins for hire, but first they must ask permission to leave the Assassin’s Guild from Arobynn-which seemed an unlikely proposition.  But Arobyn’s reluctance was only matched by his price and his betrayal.

Needing money, Sam started investigating alternative methods to raising funds, including illegal arena fights, and contracts to assassinate some of the most vile and sadistic crime lords the Adarlan Empire had ever seen.  But news travel fast and Arobynn suddenly reveals his true feelings and why he has been so hard on Celaena.  Only Celaena was not the only one he approached.

It was Sam’s turn to take point.  He would be the first to remove his target, but as the hours passed, Sam never returned home. Now it was Celaena’s turn to seek revenge. Only revenge was not what she found.  She and Sam had been set up, and now Celaena’s fate would be worse than death.

THE ASSASSIN AND THE EMPIRE is the final novella in the 4-part e-novella series leading up to the release of Sarah J Maas’ Throne of Glass series. Slightly more graphic in its’ violence, The Assassin and the Empire segues into the next chapter in the life of Celaena Sardothien-a life filled with sorrow and betrayal by the person she once thought of as a friend and a father.
