REVIEW: RAFE is the sixteenth instalment in Kym Grosso’s contemporary, adult IMMORTALS OF NEW ORLEANS erotic, paranormal, fantasy romance series. This alpha wolf / vampire hybrid Rafe Beaumont, and book store owner / actress Skylar Hemlock’s story line. RAFE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading JULIAN, the previous instalment, for backstory and cohesion.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Rafe and Skylar) following several interconnected pathways RAFE follows in the wake of a suspected murder spree cause by rogue vampires and black magick in Las Vegas Nevada. After a night on the town with friends, Skylar finds herself a victim of a potential stalker, only to be rescued by our story line hero. An acting opportunity in Vegas finds Skylar facing her worst nightmares, and yet, the appearance of, and rescue by Rafe Beaumont brings the world into a little more focus as Skylar faces down a horde of the undead., and a wolf in the guise of Rafe Beaumont. Rafe, as a hybrid, struggles with his vampire side, yet he has been offered a position of authority in Las Vegas, Nevada, a position of Alpha he does not want. With the help of fellow vampire Greyson, goddess witch Ilsbeth, dragon shifter Kenji, and Xavier, Rafe heads to Vegas, searching for the supernatural responsible for the killing spree, only to discover the woman that calls to his heart, has been targeted by the people in charge.
The world building is multi-layered as Rafe is determined to rid himself of his vampire persona but the vampires running wild in Vegas are being controlled by an unknown being, From New Orleans to Las Vegas, the supernatural world refuses to remain hidden as a fight for power takes control.
The relationship between Rafe and Skylar begins as a rescue but Rafe believes, and has been told, wolves’s cannot find their soul mates in humans. As a wolf, Rafe’s true mate can only be a wolf but his vampire recognizes our heroine as their fated soul. Skylar is a woman on a mission but falling for Rafe was never in the cards, and our heroine is determined to keep her distance, regardless of what her heart wants. The $ex scenes are intimate and provocative.
Once again, there is a large ensemble cast of supernatural, powerful and charismatic secondary and supporting characters, many of whom we met in the previous instalments. The camaraderie between frenemies is fast and furious, the back and forth is often humorous, yet the dysfunctional dynamics is what drives the familiarity of friendships.
RAFE is a story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, secrets and lies, family and friendships, relationships and love. The character driven premise is detailed, edgy and entertaining; the romance is fated and flawed; the characters are desperate, determined and magical.
