REVIEW: ROSES AND RUIN is the second instalment in Jade Marshall’s adult BONE MOTHER CHRONICLES dark, fantasy fairy tales. This is Adam ‘Beast’ Auguste and Isabelle’s story line.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Adam and Isabelle) ROSE AND RUIN is the dark retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Years earlier, Adam Auguste’s father made a deal with a witch, the Bone Mother, and payment came due when his son was sacrificed and cursed to become the Beast of Whitlock Forest, and the curse could be broken by three choices. Isabelle, like her mother before, is determined to free the Beast from his curse but the Beast remembers what happened years ago, and fears reprisal from the woman with whom he is falling in love.
The world building follows a similar path yet not as the original Beauty and the Beast but more so the Disney™ version we all know and love. The storyline picks up when an adult Isabelle brings her mother’s ‘book’ to the Forest, and the Forest recognizes more than Isabelle is aware. From Isabelle’s father, to the besotted hero who is threatened by Isabelle’s choices in love, ROSES AND RUIN is a gothic and darkened version of acceptance and love. The fast paced premise is dramatic and edgy: the romance is fated; the sex scenes are provocative and intense.
