REVIEW:INKED IN BETRAYAL is the first instalment in Victoria Paige’s contemporary, adult MARRIAGE INK dark, erotic, Mafia romance series., set in the author’s SCORNED FATE and DELUCCI’S OBSESSION worlds, which in turn are connected with the author’s ROGUE PROTECTORS series. This is Bratva Pakhan Kirill Zahkarov, and Mafia princess / fixer Lusenka ‘Lucy’ De Lucci’s story line.
NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.
Told from three first person perspectives (Kirill, Lucy, anonymous) INKED IN BETRAYAL follows in the aftermath of the murder of an aspiring senator, a murder to which Lucy De Lucci was witness. In an effort to protect himself and Lucy in the aftermath of the murder, Bratva Pakhan offers up a marriage of convenience but a marriage in which Lucy suspects she is nothing more than a pawn, collateral damage in one man’s war. Made to feel less than, humiliated at every turn, with the understood threats of death, Lucy embarks on search for the truth, as Kirill is embattled in a fight for control when a vendetta between crime families takes aim at the Zahkarov empire. Someone is targeting our story line couple, and Kirill is determined to destroy everyone involved.
The world building focuses on several intersecting pathways including the fight for control. Dysfunctional family dynamics are at the heart of betrayal and deceit; a battle for power pits the families against one another.
The relationship between Lucy and Kirill begins acrimoniously. A marriage of convenience predicated upon secrets and lies, a marriage in which Lucy struggles to come to terms with perceived betrayal, heart break and feeling unloved. The $ex scenes are intimate and provocative.
There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, dangerous and questionable secondary and supporting characters including many from the numerous interconnected series. We are introduced to Kirill’s sister Aralina, brother Maksim, and their parents Ivan and Irinia Zahkarova; Kirill’s driver and security guard Sata; the late senator’s wife Anya Davenport; assassin Kolya; IT specialist Trevor Hayes; Lucy’s parents Paulie and Lottie De Lucci; her brother Don Dom and Sloane; underworld criminals Duncan King, and his sons Theodore and Jeremiah. The requisite evil has many faces.
INKED IN BETRAYAL is a story of secrets and lies, power and control, betrayal and vengeance, determination and heart break. The character driven premise is dark, dramatic and edgy; the romance is seductive and passionate but Kirill is a man determined to destroy his wife. The characters are determined, desperate and charismatic. The epilogue fast forwards the story line several years.
