Told from dual first person perspectives (Will and Everleigh ) using present day and memories from the past, WHEN THE SMOKE CLEARS follows the second chance romance and relationship between our story line couple, and the fall-out of grief, loss and mental illness. Approximately eleven years earlier, a then seventeen year old, university sophomore Everleigh Reichart, spent one glorious week with William Landry, and one night would destroy their lives forever when William discovered our heroine’s age. Fast forward to present day, Everleigh has set up her practice in the same town where William Landry now calls home, and has been welcomed into the circle of friends close to William’s heart but all is not as it appears to be, eleven years has not tempered their mutual attraction or their memories of one devastating event that pushed William out of their lives, causing emotional turmoil and upheaval, and any chance for a happily ever after.

The world building focuses on family and past history, work place happiness and mental health as William and Everleigh reveal what happened in the aftermath of their night together. Everleigh is a genius, a child prodigy who struggles with everyday interactions, and doesn’t do relationships having lost her heart to our story line hero. William refuses to cross the invisible line where our heroine is concerned, and continues to struggle with the fallout of their last night together. Everleigh is hoping to create a new path in both her personal and professional life, as Will must come to terms with the devastation of his father’s illness, and his mother’s spiral of grief.

The relationship between Will and Everleigh is a second chances romance but a second chance mired in painful memories and perceived betrayal. Everleigh Reichart fell in love with our story line hero but he broke her heart and ran without looking back, never knowing the truth about what happened or why, or the emotional fall-out for our story line hero. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate .

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, protective and enlightened secondary and supporting characters many of whom will become aware of the past events that trigger both our main story line characters. The re is plenty of back and forth banter, often humorous and thought provoking. We are introduced to Everleigh’s eccentric mother Liz, as well as the return of Maren and Ozzy, Fitz and Jaymes (Wildfire 1 & 2), and several local firefighters and business people.

WHEN THE SMOKE CLEARS is a slow building story of secrets and lies, heart break and spiral, family and relationships, grief and loss, forgiveness and love. The character driven premise is emotional and edgy; the romance is impassioned but was forced due in part to Everleigh’s determination. The characters are energetic, desperate and determined. Everleigh is resolute in her desire for William Landry, an obsessive need that has shaped a good portion of our heroine’s personality and lifestyle.

The relationship between Flynn and June is one of immediate attraction, and with the help of Callie Rawlings, Flynn finds himself falling for a woman whose secrets will create another barrier between our story line couple. With secrets of his own Flynn finds himself on the outside looking in when June pushes Flynn out of her life, reluctant to restart the life she left behind. The secondary and supporting characters are interesting and engaging. We are introduced to Rupert and Callie Rawlings, as well as Flynn’s less than supportive roommates, and June’s parents Henna and Bhodi Malone.

THE MUSE is a story of secrets and lies, perceived betrayal and heart break,mistrust and misunderstanding, family and friendships, loss and love. The character driven premise is richly layered, raw and twisted; the romance is seductive and fated; the characters are edgy, and determined.

REVIEW: A GOOD BOOK is the third (and final?) instalment in Jewel E Ann’s adult SUNDAY MORNING historical romance series. This is nineteen year olds, college students Gabrielle ‘Gabby’ Jacobson, and Benjamin ‘Ben’ Ashford’s story line. A GOOD BOOK can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order for back story.

Told from dual first person perspectives ( Gabby and Ben) beginning in 1989, A GOOD BOOK focuses on the break down of a life long friendship in the face of wanting someone else. Gabrielle Jacobson is the youngest daughter of Devil’s Head Pastor Peter and Janet Jacobson, and as such, Church and God are at the forefront of her upbringing and life, but Gabby believes she has fallen in love with her sister’s ex boyfriend Matt Cory, and has followed Matt to the University of Michigan, in the hopes of beginning a romantic relationship. Meanwhile, Gabby’s lifelong best friend Ben Ashford is in his first year at UofM on a music scholarship, and to everyone’s knowledge except Gabby, Ben has been in love with Gabby all of his life but life has decided to throw Gabby and Ben a couple of proverbial curveballs, threatening their future and their friendship, a friendship that will spiral with heartbreak and loss.

The world building focuses on Gabby’s obsession with her sister Sarah’s ex boyfriend Matt. Naïve and innocent to the point of pain, having grown up in an ultra-conservative family, Gabby is completely and wholly unaware of the mechanics of $ex, boy/girl relationships, and everything that follows. Taught to honor God and the church, Gabby is determined to prove she is worthy of someone like Matt but sitting on the sidelines is her best friend Ben, a young man who is about to find himself on the outside looking in.

The relationship between Ben and Gabby is one of best friends to frenemies to lovers. Ben has been in love with Gabby for as long as he can remember but Gabby is oblivious, focusing on a man she cannot have. As Gabby struggles in her ‘love’ for Matt, Ben is about to spiral, pushing everyone he loves out of his life. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The secondary and supporting characters are charismatic and energetic including the return of Matt Cory and his parents Wesley and Violet Cory, Pastor Peter and Janet Jacobson, Gabby’s fun and quirky sisters Eve and Kyle (The Apple Tree 2), and Sarah and Isaac (Sunday Morning 1), Ben’s parents Carmen and Alan, and his sister Tillie, as well as the introduction of Gabby’s roommate Olivia who is hoping for a relationship with Ben.

A GOOD BOOK is a coming of age story focusing secrets and lies, obsession and friendships, family and love. The character driven premise is heart breaking, thought-provoking and sensitive; the romance is somewhat uneasy and edgy ; the characters are broken but struggling to thrive.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Ozzy and Maren) FROM NOWHERE follows the building but struggling relationship between our story line couple. Approximately two years earlier, Ozzy Laster lost both his wife and his father in an automobile accident, an accident that left their eight year old daughter with both physical and emotional scars. Fast forward to present day, Ozzy finds himself attracted to one of the tanker pilots who flies in and out of raging wildfires but Ozzy is struggling in the wake of losing everything two years before. Not only has Ozzy struggled but his now ten year old daughter is unable to move on from the past. As Ozzy and Maren’s relationship begins to grow, the grief and guilt begin to eat at our hero, with a little help from the people at home.

The world building focuses on one families inability to let go. From the in-laws who place the blame on an innocent man, determined to control every aspect of his life; to a young girl so traumatized, her struggles affect not only her family but the woman with whom her father is falling in love. Maren’s job is dangerous,and the future is not always a guarantee.There is no timeline on grief or guilt and in this, family and friends struggle to accept the lingering problems.

The relationship between Ozzy and Maren begins quite humorously but quickly devolves in the face of Ozzy’s dysfunctional family dynamics; his daughter’s overwhelming fear of losing everyone she loves; and our hero’s inability to stand up for himself. While Maren falls for a man who is struggling to heal, Ozzy is impotent and powerless to move on with his life. A bit of a doormat for his mother-in-laws control, Ozzy’s failure to take control begins to affect every aspect of his life. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The secondary and supporting characters include the return of Jamie and Fitz (From Air 1) , thirty-seven year old Engine Chief / firefighter Will Landry, as well as the introduction of Ozzy’s in-laws Tia and Amos, his daughter Lola, and fellow mechanic Diego.

THE APPLE TREE, set in 1987, advances the series approximately two years, and can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Told from dual first person perspectives (Eve and Kyle) THE APPLE TREE follows the building but forbidden relationship between is twenty-eight year old single father / high school teacher Kyle Collins, and eighteen year old Eve Jacobsen. Eve Jacobsen is a recent high school graduate with no prospects on the horizon. Working as a motel maid, Eve finds herself at a crossroads, struggling with her own demons, when her mother suggests her babysitting services for the new neighbor next door. Enter Kyle Collins, the man with whom Eve will fall in love. Kyle Collins is a single father, who moved to Devil’s Head for a new beginning but never intended to fall for the preacher’s eighteen year old daughter. Having been burned in the past, Kyle has issues of trust, and Eve is about to push all of Kyle’s buttons.

The world building follows several paths including Eve’s personal battles and her need to break from her parent’s overzealous religious control. Her father is the local preacher, and as such, appearances can make or break the Christian following but Eve is quickly falling for a man who is battling his own attraction to a woman ten years younger, and keeping their relationship a secret is a fight they are about to lose. Each new chapter begins with a song title relating to the couple’s journey. THE APPLE TREE is not as preachy, and does not overwhelm the reader in religious ideation as book one SUNDAY MORNING but some of the doctrines and theology of Christianity are present, none-the-less including the thinly veiled ‘Adam and Eve’ undertone using the apple tree.

Jamie is a travel nurse, a position that in which she journeys from city to city , a position where her present will collide with her past, and in the ensuing spiral, break her heart in the process.
