REVIEW: CROWN OF WAR AND SHADOW is the first instalment in JR Ward’s adult KINGDOMS OF THE COMPASS dark, fantasy adventure series focusing on barmaid Sorrel, and the man with whom she will fall in love, Merc.
NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.
Told from first person perspective (Sorrel) CROWN OF WAR AND SHADOW follows Sorrel as she is tasked with returning the crown of war and shadow to the ‘queen who sees no one’. Orphaned as a new born, Sorrel was raised by the local inn keeper, a man who treated our heroine no more than a slave but the arrival of a mercenary for hire, and the increasing demon attacks on the local herds, find the innkeeper ‘gifting’ a box from her past to our story line heroine, forcing Sorrel on a cross country journey in an effort to return the crown of war and shadow, to its’ rightful owner. All is not as is appears to be as Sorrel and Merc find themselves facing a flock of night fliers, a marauding band of spiders, and an army of the undead, souls who have been reaped by the Dark King.
The world building is detailed and complex as Sorrel’s magical abilities increase as the couple cross charred lands and ruined villages. Sorrel refuses to play the victim but needs Merc’s help to reach her final destination where our heroine will discover a familiar darkness that she has suspected all along.
The relationship between Merc and Sorrel is one of forced proximity; reluctant hero and chosen mates. Sorrel possesses magic; with the ability to heal those who have yet to pass on, Sorrel will soon discover the source of her power is more than she could have ever imagined. The $ex scenes are impassioned, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, dangerous, and edgy secondary and supporting characters many of whom have an ulterior motive as it pertains to our story line heroine. From villagers to questionable businessmen, demonic birds and spiders, barmaids, and cooks, our couple encounter a vast array of determined creatures, many of whom are not whom they present themselves to be.
CROWN OF WAR AND SHADOW is a slow building story of secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, dysfunctional family dynamics, power and control, friendships and acceptance. The premise is dark, dramatic and edgy; the romance is limited yet subtle; the characters are desperate and determined. CROWN OF WAR AND SHADOW ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.
