REVIEW:THE SUMMER BETWEEN US is the first instalment in Jennifer Probst’s contemporary, adult LOVE IN HAWAII romance series. This is thirty-five year old, single father and regional director of Purity Hotels Everett Hale, and twenty-nine year old, former professional surfer Rowan Delaney’s story line.
Told from dual omniscient third person perspectives (Rowan and Everett) THE SUMMER BETWEEN US follows the building romance and relationship between our story line couple. Rowan Delaney is a former professional surfer who, one year earlier, was forced to quit, due to a career ending injury . Living and working in Hawaii is the perfect setting for peace and tranquility for Rowan but the appearance of a lonely teen from New York, pushed Rowan to rethink what she wanted in life including the young girl’s workaholic father whose own goals differ from the women in his life. As the regional director for Purity Hotels, Everett Hale is used to order and perfection, and the newest hotel in Waikiki is the perfect foil to advance Everett’s career but Everett’s career has come at a cost-his thirteen year old daughter’s loneliness and need for her father is overshadowed by Everett’s busy schedule and the ever present cell-phone attached to his ear.
The world building focuses on family, friendships and geography. Rowan lives and works in Hawaii, a tourist mecca but a place our heroine calls home. In comparison Everett lives and breathes the New York lifestyle but his workaholic tendencies have alienated his daughter when she needs him the most. From Hawaiian culture and nightlife, to the peace and tranquility of a life at a slower pace, Everett must make a decision about his future, or lose the woman with whom he has fallen in love.
The relationship between Everett and Rowan begins acrimoniously as Rowan sees only a man who is oblivious to his daughter’s struggles. Learning to relax, Everett finds himself stepping back from the grind of his daily work but work that afford his the lifestyle to which he is accustomed. Rowan has never know anything other than the ocean and the surf, having lost more than she could have imagined but Everett’s time in Hawaii comes with an end date, and his need for control threatens any chance of happiness for our story line couple. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
The colorful and energetic secondary and supporting characters include Everett’s thirteen year old daughter Kelsey, surfers, Brie and Lea, surf shack owner Tino, as well as several hotel staff including Jessica and Matthew.
THE SUMMER BETWEEN US is a story of family and friendships, love and loss, power and control, acceptance and love. The character driven premise is edgy, emotional and heartwarming; the characters are animated, sassy and determined; the romance is seductive and spicy.
