REVIEW:A THOUSAND PERFECT LIES by Monica Murphy is a contemporary, young adult, dark academia thriller focusing on New York native Billie Vale aka Belinda Winters. A THOUSAND PERFECT LIES is the re-release of the author’s July 2024 THE LIAR’S CLUB
NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.
Told from first person perspective (Belinda/ Billie) A THOUSAND PERFECT LIES follows Billie Vale as she is ‘forced’ by her estranged father to uncover the truth behind a possible murder at the elite Wickham Academy in England. Billie’s sister Isla is currently in a coma, suspected in the murder of her best friend Emily Wells but Billie’s father Peter Vale, an alumni of Wickham Academy is determined to prove the rumors are wrong, and enlists his estranged American daughter Billie to find out the truth. Billie Vale goes undercover at Wickham Academy, in the hopes of ferreting out the truth, revealing the person responsible for so much grief.
Meanwhile, Billie will meet Emily Wells’ grieving brother Connor Wells, a young man with a heavy burden to bear in the wake of his sister’s death, and his father’s infamy. Connor tends to keep to himself but his attraction to Billie is the perfect foil for our story line heroine.
The world building follows several pathways including Billie’s struggle to fit in: from bullies to oblivious adults and parents, spoiled classmates, secret affairs, murder and fraud, and underserving heirs, Wickham Academy is a school full of generational and legacy entitled brats, each battling for control of their own lives. The deeper Billie digs into the history and culture of Wickham Academy, the murkier the past begins to unravel, directly affecting our heroine’s life going forward.
The relationship between Billie and Connor is quick to build: from new girl to Connor’s girlfriend in a matter of a couple of days but when Billie’s identity is revealed, our heroine finds herself on the outside looking in, losing the young man with whom she is falling in love. The $ex scenes are mostly implied.
We are introduced to Billie’s mother Samantha; her father Peter Vale and his wife Whitney, and Billie’s sister Isla Vale; students Sophia Harrington, Priya Shah, Abigail Roth, Freddie Pembroke, Julian Ashworth and Connor Wells.
A THOUSAND PERFECT LIES is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, power and control, grief and loss, murder and obsession, family and friendships. The character driven premise is dramatic and edgy; the characters are desperate, determined and often questionable; the romance is passionate yet subtle.
