No matter how hard I try, I can never drown the memories. I miss alcohol.
The craving claws against my stomach every day.
And being in this rehab center doesn’t help.
No one understands how it feels to not be able save someone you love.
I had to watch Macy’s demise.
How she screamed for me to help her.
I hear those screams. They echo in my head. A song on repeat. And a patient here, Sunnie, she tries to make me feel better.
She reads a damn book to me every chance she gets, and it grinds my nerves.
Who the hell is that happy? She makes me want to drink. Then, she shares her pain, and I realize her bright disposition is a mask.
I find myself wanting to make her smile, to make her happiness permanent.

Her nightmare is the reason why he is free.

Sunnie never has a normal life, and at sixteen years old discovered the evil that would continue to permeate her life. Meeting Patrick in rehab, a kindred soul, gave Sunnie purpose, if only for a short while.

The relationship between Sunnie and Patrick is forbidden between two patients locked down in rehab and detox but all is not well at the detox centre, and our couple must fight the powers as well as the ghosts from their pasts. The $ex scenes are intimate and edgy.

Several members of the Ruthless Kings MC play secondary and supporting characters. We are introduced to Gale, a nurse at the rehab centre; Patricia, a counsellor, as well as several orderlies and staff members. The requisite evil has many faces.

PIRATE is a dark, gritty, raw and emotional story line; a haunting, twisted and tragic tale of abuse, power, control and evil. The premise is dramatic and intense; the characters are victims- broken but healing; the romance is opportunistic yet compelling.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date SEPTEMBER 28, 2020

When Kyle Jones let Sydney Albright walk out of his life, he gave up on the idea of settling down. How could he when he broke the heart of the only woman he ever loved? For years he distracted himself with a parade of women, all the while hoping he would see Sydney again.

But he never wanted it to be like this…

Sydney wasn’t prepared to become a mom overnight. When she loses her sister and brother-in-law in a tragic accident, she moves back home to become the caregiver for her heart broken niece. It is no surprise to her when the small town rallies to offer support to one of their own. However, that doesn’t make Kyle showing up on her doorstep any less jarring.

While Kyle claims he is only there to help, Sydney is instantly on edge. Not only did she vow never to fall for him again, but his timing couldn’t be worse. Her niece needs to be her number one priority. Still, seeing the pain in Sydney’s eyes, Kyle won’t turn his back on her… not again.

He always said she was the first beautiful girl he loved and now he’s determined to make her the last.

REVIEW: LAST BEAUTIFUL GIRL is the sixth instalment in Samantha Chase’s contemporary, adult MAGNOLIA SOUND romance series focusing on the people of Magnolia Grove. This is construction worker Kyle Jones, and Sydney Albright’s story line. LAST BEAUTIFUL GIRL can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Kyle and Sydney) LAST BEAUTIFUL GIRL follows the rebuilding romance and relationship between construction worker Kyle Jones, and Sydney Albright. Twelve years earlier Sydney Albright walked out of Kyle Jones’ life, and in the ensuing years struggled with what was and what will never be but the death of her sister and brother in law left Sydney the guardian of their now twelve year old daughter Hayley, a young girl who continued to struggle with the loss of her parents. Reluctantly moving back to her hometown of Magnolia Grove to raise her sister’s daughter found Sydney wondering if she would be able to face her past, a past that was about to come full circle when reparations are needed on her sister’s home. Enter construction worker Kyle Jones. What ensues is the rekindling romance and relationship between Kyle and Sydney, and the back and forth, yin and yang, roller coaster ride that treads the find line of love and hate between our leading couple.

The relationship between Kyle and Sydney is at best, tempestuous, and vitriolic, at its’ worst. Sydney battles between head and heart, unable to forgive Kyle for sins of the past as Kyle desperately tries to make amends but epically fails at every turn. Add a hormonal, pre-teen who has yet to accept the changes in her life, and the relationship between Kyle and Sydney is doomed to fail, before it begins. All of the $ex scenes fade to black or are implied.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, energetic and well-meaning but thoughtless secondary and supporting characters who are constantly at odds with our story line couple. Most believe Kyle is no good for our story line heroine, and constantly point out Kyle’s fault as though he is a serial killer in disguise.

LAST BEAUTIFUL GIRL is a story of love and loss; grief and acceptance; of family and friendships; second chances and moving forward. The premise is captivating; the romance is passionate; the characters are animated but I struggled with the heroine’s acerbic and abrasive attitude towards the man that she loved.

Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person perspectives ( Quinn and Graham) RIFTS AND REFRAINS is a story of second chances between twenty-seven year olds, single father / builder Graham Hayes, and drummer for Hush Note Quinn Montgomery. Nine years earlier, high school sweethearts Quinn Montgomery and Graham Hayes were destroyed when Quinn felt it was time to leave her hometown of Bozeman, Montana in the face of her father’s anger and fury. RIFTS AND REFRAINS is a story of family, friendships, relationships and love; a story of misunderstand and miscommunication; dysfunctional family values, forgiveness and happily ever afters. The premise is emotional and heart breaking; the romance is seductive and passionate; the characters are energetic and dynamic.

She took one step before stopping. A smile tugged at the corner of her mouth, the same corner I’d kissed earlier, and I fought the urge to stand and capture that mouth again. Her smile broadened, though there was pain in her eyes.“Colin is a cool kid. You’re a good dad, Graham. I always knew you would be.”

She might as well have stabbed me in the chest.

“Thanks,” I said, watching as she walked away.

Fuck me.

When had I never loved that woman?

Maybe that kiss had woken me up. Maybe it had made me realize how goddamn lonely I’d been without her. I had Colin, but there was a corner of my heart that would always belong to Quinn.

I should have followed her nine years ago.
Because now it was too late.

Emergency Powers by James McCrone-Review, Guest Post & Giveaway

Emergency Powers (Imogen Trager #3) by James McCrone-Review, Guest Post & Giveaway

Amazon.com /Amazon Paper / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 1, 2020

The accidental president is no accident.
The investigation that was FBI Agent Imogen Trager’s undoing may be the key to stopping a brutal, false flag terrorist attack meant to tighten a puppet president’s grip on power.

Imogen Trager is haunted—and sidelined—by a case she couldn’t solve. When the president dies in office, she knows that the conspiracy she chased down a blind alley still has life in it—and she needs to get back in the hunt.

As bodies pile up and leads go cold, the main target from that old case reaches out to her. He’s still at large, and now he needs protection. Imogen doesn’t trust him, and it’s not only because he’s offering intel that sounds too good to be true. He’s already tried to kill her once.

Emergency Powers feels ripped-from-the-headlines: a fractious FBI, an undermined Attorney General, powerful people exploiting the rule of law for their own gain, and using all manner of treachery to maintain their hold on power. But it’s more than headlines about things people think they know. And darker.

Set variously in DC, Seattle and small-town America, Emergency Powers is a story of corruption and redemption, achieved at enormous personal cost.

••••••••••

REVIEW:EMERGENCY POWERS is the third instalment in James McCrone’s contemporary, adult IMOGEN TRAGER political, suspense thriller series focusing on FBI Agent Imogen ‘Gen’ Trager and the investigation into the electoral process of the United States of America. EMERGENCY POWERS can be read as a stand alone but for back story, history and cohesion I recommend reading the series in order.

SOME BACKGROUND: Following the fictional 2016 US Presidential election wherein Diane Redmond is elected the first female president of the United States with an Electoral College difference of only four votes 271- 267, a series of anomalies including the ‘accidental’ deaths of seven electors sends up red flags that cannot be ignored, catching the attention of some powerful people including FBI Agent Imogen Trager, who begins an investigation of her own into the who, how and why.

Told from numerous third person perspectives EMERGENCY POWERS follows in the aftermath of the suspicious ‘death’ of American President Diane Redmond, and the quick turnaround of the people in charge. Something is wrong in Washington DC, and FBI Agent Imogen Trager, along with her team of agents and investigators, begin to piece together a conspiracy that implicates some of the most powerful men in and out of US politics.

From corruption and betrayal, secrets and lies, murder for hire, bio-terrorism and a puppet government EMERGENCY POWERS is a thought provoking story of what if-what if the all of the political power was controlled by the powerful elite, and with that control came the unquestionable influence over everyone in charge? When the legitimate power is controlled by the coercive power, everything and everyone is forced to follow the lead.

James McCrone pulls the reader into another thrilling and suspense filled roller coaster of political intrigue where the fine line between fiction and reality is blurred by the similarities of today’s current headlines.

Isolation and Conflict – by James McCrone

I’ve been thinking about isolation recently. Can’t imagine why.

And I was struck by a theme in my thrillers, one I hadn’t necessarily intended, but which is there nevertheless. That of isolation.

In my thrillers, the asymmetry of information—and the danger of sharing what you know—is the core of the tension, and suspense. Fear isolates the characters. They think they know why things are happening, but they struggle to find out how, and who is doing it.

The idea leapt out at me while I was writing the screenplays for Faithless Elector and Dark Network. A good friend who has worked as a screenwriter agreed to look at the first part of an early draft (he’d read the books) and give feedback. After noting that my screenplay, ironically, was perhaps being too faithful to a novel called Faithless, he pointed out that there was too much that was interior. Thought processes that work on the page to ratchet up tension and advance the plot don’t work on screen.

He suggested adding in a friend—maybe someone the character confides in? Or someone with whom he has playful banter, or a friendly antagonism? My friend’s broad suggestion was very helpful for the scenes I showed him, for which I’m very grateful. But I found it difficult to apply his advice more broadly. The characters’ isolation was the key, and I needed to portray that isolation while conveying information

I’m still working on the screenplays, not least because as an exercise (which is probably all the scripts will ever be) it forces me to look and think differently about what and how I write. It’s helped me become a better writer. Because as I (re)examined those works it became clear that each of the characters’ isolation, their solitude, was the point. Where do they turn? Whom can they trust?

As I began writing Emergency Powers, the book which debuts today, I wanted to use that sense of isolation—more consciously, and in a slightly different way. Recently, much has been said and written about the “us-versus-them” mindset in policing, itself a form of self-inflicted isolation. I wanted to turn that inside out.

FBI Agent Imogen Trager, and her friend Special Agent Amanda Vega can’t trust their own colleagues. For them, it’s not the Bureau v. the world, but factions within the Bureau that can’t be trusted. And for Imogen and Amanda the stakes are life and death. I wanted to explore, through Imogen, what kind of bravery it takes to stand outside, against the crowd.

The award winning writer Art Taylor, the author, most recently of The Boy Detective & The Summer of ’74 noted that Emergency Powers paints “keen portraits of true patriotism, and the courage that drives it.” My three strong female characters aren’t just standing in opposition to the conspirators, they’re having to do so while watching their backs even within the Bureau. It’s intricate work, like trying to glean clues from a bomb after it’s exploded—and it may be that one of their colleagues set the bomb in the first place. There’s worse to come, too.

The grey eminence in the story, known only as “the Postman,” does not suffer from the same kind of low information as Imogen and Amanda. But even before they know the name of the head conspirator, they begin to figure out how to isolate him.

Perhaps into a jail cell.

Their game of cat and mouse is one of the best reads I have had all year, even better is when things finally come to a head. There are things that slowly start to come to light, things from Braden’s past that he hasn’t shared, but Skye needs to know. The ending! Oh the cliffhanger on this will leave you with the worst book hanger, but also have you craving for more. 5 Star review from me, this book has chemistry, angst, suspense and so much more!

•••••••

REVIEW: NO LOVE LOST is the fifth and final Instalment in Lexi Blake’s contemporary, adult MASTERS AND MERCENARIES: THE FORGOTTEN erotic, BDSM, romantic suspense series focusing on six former military soldiers (Jax, Dante, Sasha, Tucker, Owen, Robert and Ezra/Beck) whose minds and lives were eradicated and erased by a secret, unauthorized military experiment. This is former CIA operatives Kimberly ‘Solo’ Solomon, and Ezra Fain aka Beckett Kent’s story line. NO LOVE LOST should not be read as a stand alone as the story line has been building throughout the series. THE FORGOTTEN is a spin off from the author’s Masters and Mercenaries series; several characters from the aforementioned series as well as the Nights in Bliss, Colorado and Texas Sirens series cross over for familiarity.

NOTE: If you have not read Lexi Blake’s original Masters and Mercenaries series, their may be some confusion as it pertains to the Lost Boys and their backstory.

WARNING: There are some BDSM scenes as well as Dom/sub sexual scenarios.

SOME BACKGROUND: Several months (years) earlier, the mercenaries from the McKay-Taggart Black Ops group rescued, from an unauthorized military lab, run by Dr. Hope McDonald, six men they labelled the ‘Lost Boys’. With their memories wiped clean, no ID, and no traceable DNA, the Lost Boys were essentially ‘new born’ soldiers trained to kill and destroy. The Forgotten are their stories.

Told from third person perspectives, covering several years beyond the present, NO LOVE LOST focuses on the acrimonious and caustic relationship between former CIA operatives, former lovers, and the now divorced couple Kimberly ‘Solo’ Solomon, and Ezra Fain aka Beckett Kent. Divorced for years, our couple struggled with the reality that the fine line between love and hate goes a long way when Beck continues to blame Solo for the death of his brother but Levi Greene, a common enemy who has set his sights on our story line heroine, will pull Beck back into Kimberly’s life but in doing so Beck’s anger and pain would push her away one last time. Fast forward seven years wherein the team at McKay Taggart will discover Solo’s whereabouts which will inadvertently threaten everyone Kimberly loves. What ensues is the rebuilding but tempestuous on again, off again relationship between Beck and Kim, and the fall-out as too many lies and secrets, once again, threaten the fragile hold on trust and love .

Beckett Kent aka Ezra Fain is a man with a temper who lashes out at the woman he loves. Issues of trust, miscommunication, words said in anger and haste between the couple add fuel to an already simmering pain. As Solo struggles with her need for a man who pushes all of her buttons, the enemy is biding his time in an effort to destroy Beckett and Kim.

The relationship between Beckett and Kim is a second chance relationship that has been burned one too many times. Beckett blames Kim for the loss of his brother but it will be the secrets and lies that will push Becket over the edge. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense with some light BDSM, Dom/sub and spanking scenarios.

There is a large ensemble cast of familiar, colorful and energetic secondary and supporting characters including several of the author’s previously mentioned series. The timeline of NO LOVE LOST jumps approximately seven years wherein the author is setting the stage for her next spin off: Masters and Mercenaries-Reloaded.

NO LOVE LOST is the culmination of five interwoven storylines about The Forgotten-a group of men who lost their lives, their minds, their family and respect; a detailed story of family and friendships; betrayal and vengeance; secrets and lies; love, loss, and forgiveness. The premise is emotional and engaging; the romance is heart breaking yet seductive; the characters are struggling to find a place in the world.

“Kim, stop.” Beck sighed, an exhausted sound. “Please.”
It was the please that did it. He was so rarely polite to her. She took a deep breath and turned to him. They needed to ratchet down the emotion. It was what always tripped them up. “I don’t think we can work together.”
“We certainly can’t if I continue to be a massive asshole.” He moved toward her, putting his hands on her shoulders. “I’m sorry. You’re still a touchy subject for me.”
She nodded, unable to say a word for fear of unleashing a tidal wave. Not seconds before she’d told herself to tamp down the emotion, but here it was, threatening to overwhelm her and all he’d had to do was touch her.
“How about we agree that Levi Green is a problem for both of us and we work together to solve it,” he offered. “Kim, we’ve been going in circles for years. Maybe it’s time we find a way to move on. I know I’m tired of hating you.”
She stepped back. She couldn’t have his hands on her when he used that word. It was wrong when all she’d ever done was love him. “Ariel pointed out that it would be easier on both of us if I stopped showing up in your life.”
His gaze softened. “Would it? I didn’t see you for a couple of years and it didn’t feel any easier.”
She let a moment pass. How was it she felt even more vulnerable than she had when she was with Levi? “I know. I’ve tried to move on. I don’t seem to be able to.”
His hands moved as if he wanted to touch her, but he seemed to rethink the idea. “So maybe we should go about this another way. Maybe we should take this time and do what we didn’t do before. Talk. Try to find a way to get through this. I’m sorry I said what I did about you and Levi. It still hurts and I’m lashing out. All I know is when I thought you were in danger, I knew I couldn’t sit on my hands and let it happen. I can’t do it now either. Let me come with you. Let me help fix this.”
No. It was the only word she should say to him, and then she should turn and walk out and never look back. If she let him in, he would hurt her no matter how good his intentions were. Beck had always had a well of rage inside him that he wouldn’t deal with, wouldn’t acknowledge even existed. He hadn’t changed.
“Okay.” She hadn’t changed either. She was still helpless when it came to this man. She was still in love with him and likely always would be.
He let go of a heavy breath. “Good.” He was silent for a moment, looking her over. “Did he hurt you? Are your wrists okay?”
She’d managed to get what was left of the zip ties off in the car. She had some red marks on her wrists. “They’re sore, but all right. He didn’t slap me around this time.”
She watched as Beck’s hands formed fists and wished she hadn’t said that. His rage was always simmering under the surface when she was around.
He seemed to let it go. “All right. We should get on the road. Can you grab some water and protein bars? I don’t know what we’ll find when we get to Paris.”
She kind of thought she did know. She’d done a lot of homework on Big Tag, and if Rene was who she thought he was, then Beck would feel right at home.
Still, she grabbed the water bottles and bars and stuffed them in the duffel Steph had provided for her. There were a couple of T-shirts and a pair of sweatpants that would likely be too short, but beggars couldn’t be choosers.
This was all she had in the world. It was odd. She would have said possessions were meaningless, but now that she had no access to any of the things that brought her comfort, she missed them with all her heart.
She had one thing. She reached up and found some peace knowing her ring was still there. All these years and she still had her wedding ring. It hung low around her neck, and she always hid it under her shirt when Beck was around.
It was all she had left of her marriage.
“You ready?” Beck fitted a cap to his head and passed her another. “You might want to put your hair up. I know if I was looking for you, all that hair would be the first thing to catch my eye.”
How many nights had he tangled his fingers in her hair and gently tugged, had he told her how beautiful it was and that he never wanted her to cut it? “Yeah. I’m ready.”
He stepped in front of her and placed the cap on her head, his gorgeous eyes staring down at her. “I really am sorry I said what I did. Can you forgive me?”
Her whole soul threatened to melt. She nodded.
“Can I hug you? I want to. I want to reassure myself that you’re really okay.”
She nodded again and then she was in his arms for the first time in years.
“Promise me he didn’t get a chance to hurt you,” Beck whispered.
He sounded like he actually cared. His arms around her made her feel safer than she had in forever. “He threatened me with a bunch of stuff, but I don’t want to talk about it. I will, but not now.”
“Okay.”
They stood there for the longest time, the sound of his heartbeat the only thing she could hear.
