REVIEW:The first book in what I hope to be a lengthy new series, (Not so) Simple Lyrics is the first installment in the Heartbreak Mixtapes series by Claudia Burgoa. One thing that we know about this author is that her books are always going to give us the BEST stories filled with angst, loss and refound love.
Kit and Roderick grew up together in music royalty, it seemed natural that they too would follow in those same footsteps. It was even more natural that they both fall in love and have a world-wind relationship that fuels their music even more. Unfortunately nothing worked out the way they wanted it to, Roderick breaks Kit’s heart in two and sends them both down a sad, dangerous path for years to come. Now, over a decade later they meet again, but not in the way most would think. Without knowing who one another are, they slowly begin their second chance romance over online chats and sharing their love of music all over again. When the truth comes out though, who each of them is, what they have shared, lets just say that Kit has a few choice words to say.
Ms. Claudia, you are the real music maker sister! The amount of research that this book required alone is amazing, from the songs, to the throw back of the 90’s, all of it was top tier. Kit and Roderick have such a complicated relationship, but one that was founded by their mutual love of all things music. I loved seeing their passion for the art and what they created together. I had a really hard time wrapping my mind around the reason Roderick breaks up with Kit, it really didn’t set well with me, but the plot pushes on and so did I. As their rekindled relationship blossoms, we get snippets of their past together and that was a great way to bring another layer to their relationship. The spice was spicying, the angst was angsting and the ending made me wishing the next one in the series was already out.
