She came to him in pieces. He’ll shatter anyone who tries to take her back.

Hakon

I was nine years old when my mother put me on a plane and told me to forget her face.

Off to a new country, forced to learn a new language. I even had a new name on the school roster. I learned to flatten my accent until nobody asked where I came from. Learned to smile softly, hold doors, laugh at the right jokes.

I learned that the easiest way to disappear isn’t to run. It’s to be the kind of man nobody bothers to remember. By the time I started to prospect for the Raiders of Valhalla, I’d been a ghost so long I’d forgotten there was anything underneath.

Then I found her bleeding in a parking lot in the middle of the night. Wrong girl. Wrong night. Wrong man already coming back to finish what he started. I should’ve called it in. Should’ve handed her off to someone with rank and a clean conscience. Instead I put a bullet in him, wrapped her in my cut, and broke every rule I swore I’d ever follow.

She won’t tell me her name. Won’t tell me who he was. Won’t stop flinching every time I move too fast. She doesn’t have to. I know that kind of fear. I was raised by it. And the second I saw it on her face, the boy my mother put on that plane twenty years ago finally woke up.

They’re coming for her. All of them. Whatever family she ran from, whatever debt she’s carrying, whatever name she’s too scared to say out loud. Let them come. I spent my whole life being the one nobody looked at twice. They’re about to wish they’d kept it that way.

He swore he’d never touch her. She swore she’d never let him stop.

Tindra

Everyone in my family treats me like a fragile thing.

My father, who missed the first fifteen years of my life and has been overcorrecting ever since. My grandfather, who built an empire and won’t let me anywhere near it. My mother, who knows exactly what I’m doing with Bodul and pretends she doesn’t.

They think they’re protecting me. They have no idea I’ve been protecting him from them.

Nearly a year of stolen nights. Locked doors. His shirt on my floor, his hands on my hips, his name the only secret I’ve ever been good at keeping.

Then my father walked in.

The screaming. The fists. The emergency kirkja. The choice they tried to make for me. I survived all of it—and so did he. What I didn’t survive was the phone call that pulled him out of my bed in the middle of the night afterward. The two days he disappeared. The split lip and bruises he came home with and the lie he tried to tell me about where they came from.

Or the woman who bumped into me at a coffee shop yesterday and said she had a feeling we’d be seeing each other again.

I’ve grown up in this club. I know exactly what that means. Someone’s coming for me. Someone’s already gotten to him.

And the only way we make it out the other side is if the boy with the buried name finally tells me who he really is—before they make him choose between his blood and mine
