When life falls apart, it’s never because of the big demons.

Kate Connor’s demon-hunting school is finally starting to find its footing—but beneath the surface, everything is threatening to unravel.

Her husband’s sudden psychic episodes keep interrupting dinner. Her daughter is torn between Mr. Tall-Dark-and-Broody and the dangerously intriguing new kid. And Kate’s marriage? Let’s just say it’s being held together with duct tape, holy water, and stubborn determination.

As if that weren’t enough, someone from Kate’s past—very much back from the dead—has resurfaced, stirring old feelings she’d long buried and raising questions she doesn’t want to answer. The timing couldn’t be worse. Or more suspicious.

With tensions rising at home and unsettling signs that something is wrong within the academy itself, Kate must untangle emotional knots and hidden threats before small cracks turn into catastrophic breaks.

Because demons may come armed with claws and fangs—but it’s the quiet details, the secrets and doubts, that do the real damage.

And if Kate doesn’t get ahead of them soon, this might be the one mess she can’t clean up.

REVIEW: THE DEMON’S IN THE DETAILS is the ninth instalment in J. Kenner’s contemporary, adult DEMON-HUNTING SOCCER MOM paranormal, urban fantasy series focusing on demon-hunter Kate Connor, and her seventeen year old daughter Allie. THE DEMON’S IN THE DETAILS can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion as the current premise is as of a direct result of the previous story lines.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Kate and Allie) THE DEMON’S IN THE DETAILS follows Kate Connor as she prepares for an influx of new students at the California based Vatican school for Demon-Hunters in training. As the new headmistress, Kate makes preparations for the new arrivals but all is not as it appears to be when a demon, long thought banished and gone, demands access through a secret door.

Meanwhile, Kate’s soon to be seventeen year old daughter Allie has fallen in love with Jared, a one-hundred and twenty-seven year old vampire who refuses to make Allie immortal (sound familiar?) but Allie’s new direction in life is about to spiral when the past returns demanding everything and more.

The world building is intriguing and revealing as the story line follows several intersecting pathways including Kate’s imploding marriage to Stuart, a man whose episodes of clairvoyance leave him struggling, and Kate’s ongoing love for her daughter’s father.

THE DEMON’S IN THE DETAILS is a story of second chances and betrayal, power and control, magic and the supernatural, love and loss. The premise is entertaining and engaging but the conflict resolution was too quick, lacking any emotional depth or action. The characters are determined, magical and desperate.
