ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 9, 2021

Since taking over the county coroner’s office, Meredith “Doc” Carter has been working hard to gain the respect of both her peers and local authorities. Reporting the circumstances surrounding the death of a loved one is often a thankless part of her job. Still, those are the easier cases. Random body parts turning up are substantially more troublesome, and when the facts don’t line up Meredith reaches out to entomologist, Casey Shea for answers.

Detective Jay VanDyken has admired Doc from the sidelines. His recent promotion comes with the added benefit of dealing directly with the silver-haired forensic pathologist, an opportunity he doesn’t plan on wasting. The discovery of partial remains have Jay and Meredith working closely together, but breaking down the pieces to build their case is not the only challenge. Their developing relationship has its own share of problems.

REVIEW:DISSECTING MEREDITH is the sixth instalment in Freya Barker’s contemporary, adult ON CALL- Police and Fire: Operation Alpha romantic suspense series, and the latest cross-over story line with the characters introduced by author Susan Stoker. This is detective Jay VanDyken, and coroner Dr. Meredith Carter’s story line. DISSECTING MEREDITH can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary. Fans will recognize the cameo appearance by the author’s Arrow’s Edge MC.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Jay and Meredith) DISSECTING MEREDITH follows the building romance and relationship between forty five year old coroner Dr. Meredith Carter, and forty-two year old detective Jay VanDyken. Jay VanDyken has lusted after county coroner Meredith Carter for as long as he can remember but our hero was reluctant to make a move. When a number of frozen and vacuum-sealed body parts are discovered over a short period of time not only the coroner but a forensic pathologist and the FBI are called in to hunt for a possible suspect pushing Meredith and Jay together in an effort to discover the who, how and why. As the body parts begin to amass with a possible link to a series of fatal drug overdoses, Meredith finds herself the target of someone hoping to stop the couple from investigating further. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Meredith and Jay, and the potential fall-out as not only is Meredith targeted but our hero, as well.

Jay VanDyken comes from a large and well-connected political family but our hero walked away without looking back. Never mind that he never wanted to follow the path of his forebearers but a potential scandal is about to fall into VanDyken’s lap, a scandal not of his making. Falling for Meredith was easy, convincing her that she is his own happily ever after may be more difficult than solving the crimes in Durango, Colorado. Meredith Carter never thought she would find someone to love, having loved and lost years before but something about Jay VanDyken called to her heart, and working with Jay meant getting up close and personal with the man with whom she would fall in love.

The relationship between Jay and Meredith begins as a professional relationship that will quickly turn into something more if the number of interruptions would only let them get on with their private time together but the number of body parts begin to increase, and a familiar pattern begin to emerge. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and energetic secondary and supporting characters including Detective Keith Blackfoot (Burning For Autumn 1); fellow pathologist Paul Gibson, and autopsy technician Lauren Mullins; Meredith’s assistant Janey ; funeral home director Rob Wenner; officer Tony Ramirez (Absolving Blue 4); Chief Joe Benedetti (Covering Ollie 2); paramedic Kyle (Sumo) Matsumoto (Revealing Annie 5) ;pastor John Dunwoody; entomologist Casey Shea; loner and alcoholic Tom Ward; several addicts and local riffraff, as well as Meredith’s dog Beau, and Beau’s kitten Belle.

DISSECTING MEREDITH is a twisted story of power and betrayal; relationships, friendships, tragedy and love. The character driven premise is imaginative, inviting and edgy; the romance is seductive and lively; the characters are spirited, dynamic, inspiring and mature. Freya Barker writes intense, decadent, impassioned and suspenseful stories that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
