Armed N’ Ready (Federal K-9 #2) by Tee O’Fallon-Review, Excerpt & Giveaway Tour

Armed N’ Ready (Federal K-9 #2) by Tee O’Fallon -Review, Excerpt & Giveaway Tour

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / iBooks / Chapters Indigo / Google Play

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 19, 2019

Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Nick Houston is as tough as they come, and he and his K-9, Saxon, are hot on the trail of a major illegal gun dealer. But his best lead—the beautiful owner of the Dog Park Café, Andi Hardt––is not cooperating. Doesn’t matter how sexy she is, or that his dog seems to be in love with her. She’s a suspect and he won’t cross that line. Ever.

Andi Hardt sank everything into her dream business—the Dog Park Café, a restaurant catering to dogs as much as people. Now everything is in jeopardy because of one extremely frustrating, incredibly hot state trooper. Like it or not, she’s in Nick’s crosshairs, and he’s calling the shots. Her only option: cooperate, or lose everything she’s worked so hard for.

Nick and Andi are catapulted straight into the danger zone, forcing them to make life-altering choices, and face their desires. Risking his life for Andi is the easy part. Risking his heart is the toughest assignment Nick will face.

•••••••••

REVIEW: Armed ‘N’ Ready begins with Andi Hardt giving her dog, Stray, a bath, or shower, as it were. One minute everything is fine and then the next minute, someone barges into the bathroom who is large and very intimidating. So is the huge black shepherd with him. Andi is convinced she is about to be attacked, until she notices the guy has on a police uniform, as does his dog, Saxon. How can housesitting for one of her best friends go so very wrong?

Sgt. Nick Houston is a little stunned to find Andi in the house where they are serving a warrant. He knew who she was immediately, due to surveillance. What he wasn’t prepared for was finding her bathing her dog in a tiny bikini and her being so feisty. Once he assures her that she will be fine, the female officer enters the room so that Nick can leave and Andi can get dressed.

Once downstairs, the officers tell Andi the reason for the search warrant: her friend, Joe, is laundering money for some illegal run dealers. Once Andi realizes the seriousness of the situation, she reluctantly agrees to help in any way with the investigation, as does Nick.
As they set their plan into motion, both Andi and Nick find themselves wondering ‘what if’ concerning the other one. Both have been hurt deeply in the past, which leaves them both in denial. However, when Andi’s life is threatened, Nick kicks things into overdrive to try and bring Joe in and protect Andi. Secrets are revealed and a misunderstanding threatens to derail everything, but when Andi’s life is threatened once again, Nick knows he has to save her, at all costs.

Armed ‘N’ Ready is a great pulse-pounding addition to the Federal K-9 series. Both main characters are very well written and I love the world that O’Fallon has built. Andi’s backstory endears hear to the reader, but it’s Nick’s story that will draw you in. Both have loved and lost, but in horribly different ways. I love the two of them together. Their chemistry is off the charts. The secondary characters are well written and add to all of that the fact that the dogs are great characters as well, and you’ve got a story that keeps you turning the pages. Even though this is the second in a series, this one, as well as the first, can be read as standalones. But, I don’t know why you would want to. 😉 I can’t wait for the next. Well done, Tee O’Fallon! Very, very well done!

She finished setting a table at the far end of the deck, then paused to look into the dog run. Her profile was to him, and he could see a smile forming on her lips, but it was short-lived. Slowly, she turned, searching the tables she hadn’t gotten to yet, and he understood what she was looking for. Him. Dogs like Saxon were distinctive in size and color. There was only one of him within at least a several-hundred-mile radius, and wherever Saxon was, Nick was.
When she finally found him, her eyes narrowed to slits and her lips compressed into a thin line. With the tray still in her hand, she took a deep breath and headed straight to his table with long, determined strides.
So much for their little truce yesterday afternoon. She had to know something was up.
“Good morning,” he said when she came to stand beside his outstretched legs. From the irritated gleam in her eyes, he thought she might dump the tray over his head.
She set down the tray and crossed her arms. “What are you doing here?”
A light breeze brought with it her scent, all flowery and pretty. No matter how much hewished otherwise, he couldn’t deny it. Something about her torqued every one of his senses.
“Can’t a guy get some relaxation while he’s watching his dog play?” He locked his hands behind his head and looked up at her.
“I have no doubt this is not a social call. For you or your partner.” She jerked her head to the dog run.
“And you accused me of being overly suspicious?” He clucked his tongue. He was beginning to enjoy this. “Now who’s being suspicious?”
Her lips compressed into an even thinner line. “I’m not stupid, Sgt. Houston.” She yanked out the chair next to his, then sat and leaned into his personal space. With her blue eyes and sun-kissed complexion, she was just as lovely as he remembered. “I know you want something. You said you don’t deal in bullshit, so how about doing me the courtesy of getting to the real reason you’re here.”
“Fine.” He unlocked his hands from behind his head and leaned in until their faces were only inches apart. Bad idea. This close and his senses were more than going into overdrive—they were sparking with ignition.
Her sweet scent was in his nose and lungs. Her warm breath fanned his face like a gentle caress.
The job, he reminded himself.
He hadn’t acted since college, but he could do it, and he wouldn’t fail.
Showtime. Act I, Scene I, starring Nick Houston.
“Until Joe Myer shows up, I’m your new bartender.”

HARDEST FALL (Dominion #2) by Juliette Cross-Dual Review and Excerpt

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo / Google Play

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 25, 2019

The tattooed demoness, Bone, doesn’t like anything except the magical weapons she makes. But she has hidden talents few know about. When I was brought to her near death, she used her Seraph song to manipulate flesh and bone to save me. But she wasn’t happy about it.

Now I must return the favor. Even though she refuses to take sides in the apocalypse, there’s one job she’s not willing to do for the demon prince Rook. If she doesn’t, her head will end up on a spike. Of course, there’s a good chance we’re all going to die anyway, but I will do anything to protect this fierce woman—and not just because she saved me.

So now we’re both off to kill a demon—or three—and possibly save the world.

••••••••••

Sandy’s REVIEW: HARDEST FALL is the second instalment in Juliette Cross’ post-apocalyptic, dystopian DOMINION fantasy, romance series focusing on the fight for control and power- the Great War- between Heaven and Hell. This is demoness/former seraph Bone, and demon Xander’s story line. HARDEST FALL can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary. Bone was first introduced in book one-Darkest Heart.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Xander and Bone) HARDEST FALL follows the building relationship between demoness/former seraph Bone, and demon Xander, and the ongoing war between Heaven and H*ll. Bone, the former angel, has an affinity to metal, and as such, is the creator of some of the most specialized weapons in the war between Heaven and H*ll but as a former Seraph, Bone also has a gift of song that heals, as well as influences those she wants to control. When high demon Dommiel brings a broken and battered demon into her private lair, Bone is asked to help save the life of the man with whom she will fall in love. Enter Xander, aka Alexander Godfrey the once human rake of Victorian England, and a demon who sides with the Angels and the human resistance fighters known as the Twelvers. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Xander and Bone, and the potential fall-out as Bone is commanded (or forced) to build a secret weapon for demon Prince Rook, a weapon whose power could destroy them all.

The relationship between Xander and Bone finds our hero falling for the demoness that calls to his heart. Bone refuses to take sides in a war between Heaven and H*ll but a war that pushes our heroine to side with the man she loves, and the people he will die to protect. The Sex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

HARDEST FALL is a story of good vs evil; Heaven vs H*ll; love vs hate. Bone and Xander struggle with sins of the past, sin that resulted in the demonic changes to our leading couple. The premise is inviting, complex and intense; the romance is seductive and spicy; the characters are sassy, spirited, playful and strong. Juliette Cross pulls the reader into a captivating, thought-provoking and thrilling ride between angels and demons, and the people they love.

Barb’s REVIEW: Hardest Fall by Juliette Cross is the 2nd book in her urban fantasy Dominion series. I am a big fan of Juliette Cross, as I have loved each and every book she writes.  Hardest Fall is no exception, as it was another fantastic book.  Once again, if you have not read Juliette Cross, and you like fantasy, paranormal, or romance, you are missing a gem of an author.

Bone, our heroine, whom we met in the previous book, was busy working on her unique ability to make powerful weapons, when Dommiel  (last book hero) rushes in bringing a severely injured man.  Bone takes one look at the man, and says she cannot help him, but Dommiel knows if anyone can save him, it is her; reluctantly, Bone agrees to try.

Xander, is a demon hunter, and when he awakes he thinks that Bone used her essence to heal him, and Xander does not want any Demon essence inside him. But what he doesn’t know is that Bone is much more powerful, she is a former seraph (a fallen angel), who walked away and takes no sides between humans and demons.  Bone can forge metal into the deadly powerful  weapons she creates and sells to the highest bidder.  When Xander overhears Bone talking to the Demon prince, Rook and his brother Simian about creating a special unique crown, he decides he needs to find out  more about the weapon and what they want to use it for.  This opens the door for Xander and Bone to work together in trying discovering what the evil Demon prince is planning.

What follows is a fascinating story, as we follow Bone and Xander, as well as the many members of the rebels determined to fight and defeat the demons.  It was great to spend time with Dommiel, Anya, George, Kat as they teamed up with Bone & Xander.  There are a number of times when they were in all in dangerous situations, which had us on the edge of our seats.   Most of all, I really enjoyed seeing both Xander and Bone begin to fall hard for each other; as their chemistry was off the wall, hotter than hell.  😉  As Xander pulls her into his world, Bone begins to change and learn to feel love with Xander, as well as knowing she needs to step up and take a side…helping the humans against the demons.

Hardest Fall was a heart stopping, pulse pounding, action packed, intense exciting thriller that I was unable to put the book down, but it was the love between Xander and Bone, as well as the wonderful secondary characters that made this story so good. I do not want to give spoilers, as you really need to read this series and anything by Juliette Cross.

Hardest Fall was fantastic story set in a post-apocalyptic world of Demons, Humans, and Angels, as well as pulling on our emotions throughout.    As always, thank you Juliette Cross for another sensational story which never fails to wow us.

The beat of the eighties anthem “Back in Black” pounded from within. Apparently, Axel was keeping the electricity up in this part of the city for the benefit of his club. Electricity was in sporadic use, like everything else. It always depended on the demon in charge of the territory.
“Looks like Axel’s band is playing a show tonight,” Xander said.
I exhaled a heavy sigh. “He never changes.”
That was the truth. If Axel had the power, he’d replay the 1980s over and over. He and his tribute band continued, even in the apocalypse, to keep those long-dead, big-haired, hard-rock bands alive.
He glanced down where, apparently, we were still holding hands, then brushed his thumb over my pulse. I pulled my hand roughly from his.
“Your heart rate is up, darling. Do I make you nervous?”
“Please.” I huffed and marched toward the club’s entrance. “You do not make me nervous.”
He followed in his swaggering, unhurried gait, and I could feel his eyes on my ass. “Well, you get mine up.”
I spun, standing in a pool of light that spilled from the one lit streetlamp on the entire darkened road.
“Really? Do I make you nervous?”
A definitive shake of his head. “Just anxious.”
“Anxious about what?”
“The possibilities.”
“What possibilities?”
“Between you and me.”
“There will be no you and me.”
Laughing, he practically crooned. “Ohhh, yes. There will be. There already is.”
Hands on my hips, eyes narrowed. “What makes you think so?”
“The way you look at me.”
“And how is that, exactly?”
“The same way I look at you.” He stepped forward, gaze roaming slowly down then back up. “Covetously.”
“You’re dreaming, hunter.”
“Of you…yes. In my bed.”
“You know?” I began matter-of-factly, tilting my head to the side. “Lust is nothing more than increased blood flow, sweat gland production, and release of the neurochemical dopamine, giving the body a natural high.” I gave him a self-satisfied smile. “Not unlike what drug users experience before their next fix.”
He inched closer. “Are you saying you’re addicted to me?”
“What? No.”
“Don’t worry, love.” He dipped his head lower, bringing our mouths within inches of each other. “I’ll give you a thorough Xander-sex-fest to take care of that itch.”
“You’re incorrigible.”
“As in persistent?”
“As in hopeless.” I spun and stormed toward the club, tossing over my shoulder. “Incurable!”
“Oh, there’s a cure, all right.” He followed, chuckling. “I’ll share it with you before long.”
Even as I pretended I didn’t hear that last bit, I shivered in hopeful anticipation.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 27 , 2019

A dare turns into so much more…

All I want to do is get to work on time.
But a Prince Harry look-a-like is trying to steal my cab,
and that’s not going to happen.

In the midst of the battle,
I discover I lost my wallet.
So I bargain—a free ride for a kiss.

His lips taste like mint, and when he tugs me closer,
I can feel the hard muscles beneath his expensive suit.

The kiss ends just as we reach our destination,
and I’m so taken aback by the explosiveness of it,
I rush out without so much as a goodbye.
I’m a hopeless romantic with no time for distractions.

But fate, that bitch,
Has us pounding on the same locked door.

Already knowing I’m going to be fired,
I curse my new boss and his new rules.
The hot suit laughs,
And dares me to tell my new boss what a dick he’s being.
With nothing to lose, I accept.

Never in a million years could I have imagined he is my new boss.
Dating him is against the rules,
His rules.
He’s a rulebreaker, though,
And everyone knows a rulebreaker isn’t a forever-kind-of-guy.

So when he says let’s keep things casual,
I dare him not to fall in love with me.

But there’s a reason rules aren’t meant to be broken,
And finding that out is the hardest thing I’ll ever have to do in my life.

My rulebreaker has a name,
It’s Prince Maximus Montgomery.
And this is our story.

REVIEW: WOULD BE KING is the second instalment in Kim Karr’s contemporary, adult THE UNKNOWN ROYALS erotic, romance series focusing on the fictional royal families representing the five Vespa Isles. This is Crown Prince Maximus Napoleon Montgomery of Casanovia, and American fashion expert Gianna ‘Gigi’ Natalia Gatsby’s story line. WOULD BE KING can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary. Prince Maximus was first introduced in book one-Washed Up Royal.

Told from dual first person perspectives, as well as several third party ‘media’ observations WOULD BE KING follows the forbidden relationship between Crown Prince Maximus Napoleon Montgomery of Casanovia, and fashion expert Gianna ‘Gigi’ Natalia Gatsby. A new job, a shared cab ride, and a kiss with a stranger finds our heroine, Gigi Gatsby, facing her kiss-Max- the new owner of Bombshell magazine, and ultimately her boss. Refusing to go against company policy Gigi struggles with the ‘no fraternization ‘ policy due to her attraction and growing romance with Max, a man who is willing to bend the rules for the woman with whom he is falling in love. But things go from bad to worse when Gigi discovers that Max has left out some important information including the fact he is second in line to the thrown of Casanovia, a small principality in Europe. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Gigi and Max, and the potential fall-out Gigi continues to battle her attraction to a man who may or may not be betrothed to someone else.

Prince Maximus Montgomery is a bit of a manwh*re whose father is desperate to marry off his son to respected royalty. Not once but twice Max will back out of two potential marriages, marriages to women he neither loves nor adores. Meeting Gigi, an American commoner finds our hero throwing caution to the wind, caution that gets him in trouble on more than one occasion. Her entire life Gigi Gatsby has focused on fashion and landing the job at Bombshell magazine is the greatest coup of her life. Meeting Max, although accidentally in a cab, threatens not only her job but her sense of reality as their worlds collide and begin to spiral out of control.

The relationship between Gigi and Max is one of immediate attraction; a shared, wet cab ride wherein Gigi’s soul focus is on landing a new job, and Max’s focus in on the woman sitting next to him, in the pouring rain. As Max struggles to convince Gigi they are meant to be together, Gigi battles between head and heart, and the ramifications of losing her job, and ultimately falling in love with a royal prince. He $ex scenes are intimate, passionate and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are re-introduced to Gigi’s roommate and best friend Ava Smart who will fall in love with Max’s best friend Hunter Tigress, Ava’s sister Rachel and Prince Truman: Max’ brother Prince Leopold and his wife Petunia, as well as King Winston Alfred Montgomery and his new bride Queen Genevieve; Max’ s bodyguard Gabriel.

WOULD BE KING is a story of betrayal, vengeance, falling in love and letting go. Royal protocol is all about appearances but appearances are deceiving including the trust you place in the people sworn to protect. The premise is intriguing and emotional; the romance is flirty and heart breaking; the characters are colorful, energetic and charismatic. WOULD BE KING is a cross between ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, and the real-life romance between Harry and Megan-a forbidden romance trope- in more ways than one.

Description:
Every storm they’ve weathered…has led them to each other

Dan Amos lost his wife and son years ago, when they inadvertently got in the way of a death threat meant for him. He’s never had eyes for anyone since, and he doesn’t want to. But fellow Blessings resident Alice Conroy sparks something inside him…

Newly widowed, Alice was disillusioned by marriage and isn’t looking to fall in love anytime soon. Then a tropical storm blazes a path straight for the Georgia coast, and as the town prepares for the worst, Dan opens his heart and his home. The tempest is raging, but Alice and Dan are learning to find shelter…in each other.

Review:

Forever My Hero by Sharon Sala is the 7th book in her Blessings, Georgia series.    Having read all the books in this series, I looked forward to reading this book, and to no surprise, I loved it. Sharon Sala always gives us wonderful feel good romances and a sweet couple we root hard for.

Alice Conroy, our heroine, has had a rough time, especially when she first moved to Blessings, Georgia with her two children, Charlie and Patty.  Her husband was killed in an explosion making meth, and his family tossed her and the children out in Blessings, with no financial help.  Alice has since found a home, and now works at the hardware store, and the children go to the local school.

Dan Amos, our hero, moved to Blessings, after his wife and child were killed in a car explosion meant for him, as Dan was a prosecuting attorney at that time.  He now oversees rental properties, ensuring people are taken care of.  Since he does handyman work, he visits the hardware store where Alice works often.  In a short time they will become friends, especially after Alice injures her hand, and Dan is the one who takes her to the hospital.  When Alice’s daughter, Patty gets hurt while on a school outing, Dan is the hero, saving Patty, as well as the Conroy’s dog.  This continues to push them closer, as they have a similar tragic history.  When Alice learns the Patty was being bullied, she steps up to protect her daughter, and when the other children’s family comes to apologize, it is Dan who stands up to them about bullying and the threats if they do not deal with this situation with their children.

With a major hurricane about to hit the entire town of Blessings, Dan makes sure that Alice, the children and another local resident move to his properties, which is safer and has a generator.  It was fun to watch Dan and Alice falling hard for each other, and both getting past the tragedies that followed them to Blessings.

What follows is a heartwarming & emotional story that touched our hearts on many levels. I loved Dan, who was a wonderful, sweet, loving and understanding man, as well as being wonderful with the children. It was a joy to see them have a second chance at love in Blessings, Georgia.

Sharon Sala writes another fabulous story that had us hooked from the start.  She amazes me that she continually gives us such great couples that we become invested in, with each and every book.  Forever My Hero was a sweet romance, with a great couple, wonderful secondary characters that we love.   If you enjoy a pure romance, wonderful characters, great couples, and a small town atmosphere, then you should be reading this series. Forever My Hero was a wonderful read, written so very well by Sharon Sala.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 26, 2019

Owen Shaw and his “brothers” lost everything, their entire existence erased. Science had robbed he and all the Lost Boys of their memories and their past, but not their future. Hunted by every intelligence agency in the world, they are focused on two goals: find a cure for what was done to them and ensure that the technology that ruined their lives doesn’t get out into the world. Rebecca Walsh might be the key to achieving both. Owen has been studying her closely, living in her building, and he cannot resolve how such a beautiful, giving woman could have helped design the evil process that destroyed his past.

Dr. Rebecca Walsh has dedicated her life to researching the secrets of the mind. Her atmospheric rise in her field was fueled by the horror of watching her mother’s agonizing journey into madness at the hands of a disease with no cure. She vowed to never rest until she finds it. But obsession takes a heavy toll, and when Owen moves into her building she realizes how much of her life she has missed out on. Owen opens her eyes to a whole new world, filled with joy, laughter, and possibly love.

Owen and Rebecca grow closer, unraveling more about each other and the mysteries surrounding her connection to Hope McDonald. As the sinister forces working against the Lost Boys descend on Toronto, secrets long buried are uncovered that could shatter the bonds holding the Lost Boys together and cost Rebecca her life.

•••••••••

REVIEW: LOST AND FOUND is the second instalment in Lexi Blake’s contemporary, adult MASTERS AND MERCENARIES: The Forgotten erotic, romantic suspense series focusing on six former military soldiers (Jax, Dante, Sasha, Tucker, Owen and Robert) whose minds and lives were eradicated and erased. This is Scotsman and former SAS soldier, Owen Shaw, and Dr. Rebecca Walsh’s story line. The Forgotten is a spin-off from the author’s Masters and Mercenaries series, and the characters were first introduced and play an important throughout the original series.

NOTE: If you have not read Lexi Blake’s original Masters and Mercenaries series, their may be some confusion as it pertains to the Lost Boys and their backstory.

SOME BACKGROUND: Several months earlier, the mercenaries from the McKay-Taggart Black Ops group rescued, from an unauthorized military lab, run by Dr. Hope McDonald, six men they labelled the ‘Lost Boys’. With their memories wiped clean, no ID, and no traceable DNA, the Lost Boys were essentially ‘new born’ soldiers trained to kill and destroy. The Forgotten are their stories.

Told from several third person perspectives including Owen and Rebecca LOST AND FOUND follows Owen Shaw as he is tasked with learning as much information about their target-Dr. Rebecca Walsh- a research scientist once known to have worked alongside Dr. Hope McDonald. Now working in Toronto Canada, Rebecca Walsh is unaware of the ramifications of her earlier research and tests, tests that may have included wiping the memories of innocent men. Hoping to have made a clean break from her past, Rebecca will soon discover that she has been targeted by more than one source including the man with whom she will fall in love. As the relationship between Owen and Rebecca continues to build, the truth will be revealed leaving Rebecca wondering if everything she knows and was told is a lie. What ensues is the building relationship and romance between Rebecca and Owen, and the fall-out as Rebecca and the ‘Lost Boys’ continue to be targeted for who they are and what they know.

Owen Shaw has no idea of the who and what of his previous life but suspects the truth may send all of the ‘Lost Boys’ spiralling out of control. With flashes of memory from his past, Owen struggles with the realization that he couldn’t save the people he loved, regardless of the promises made or the expectations met. Meeting Rebecca Walsh, an assignment and nothing more, gave Owen a hope for the future but a future with too many unanswered questions, secrets and lies. Rebecca Walsh had only ever wanted to discover a cure for Alzheimer’s and dementia, a disease that took the life of her beloved mother. But like all research there comes the good and the bad, and it is Rebecca’s knowledge of what was that makes her a target on so many levels.

The relationship between Owen and Rebecca begins as a lie. Owen is assigned to get up close with our story line heroine never expecting to fall in love. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate with some scenes of light discipline and spanking.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful secondary and supporting characters including Owen’s Lost Boy brothers: Jax and his significant other River: Dante, Sasha, Tucker, and Robert, as well as Big Tag; Theo Taggart and Erin Argent, Nick and Hayley, and Ezra Fain. The requisite evil has many faces including the continuing struggles with Levi Green. I have only touched the tip of the proverbial iceberg with the number of characters and familiar faces. Once again, there may be some confusion as it pertains to the names, nicknames and former names of several agents, soldiers and lost boys.

LOST AND FOUND is a story of betrayal, secrets and lies; family, friendship, hope and loss. The premise is intriguing and energetic; the characters are charismatic, strong, broken and hopeful; the romance is seductive and intense. LOST AND FOUND follows the lives of six men who against the odds, have survived to fight another day.

“Becca.” Owen’s voice was low. “Concentrate on me, on our conversation. You’ve done incredibly well. You’ve been able to hold it off, but this has gone on far longer than you ever should have been expected to handle it. This elevator is tight. I feel it, too, but we can hold off the anxiety together.”
She doubted very much the man in front of her was anxious. He looked solid, like the kind of man who took whatever came his way and simply dealt with it. He wouldn’t have needed two freaking years to figure out what he wanted. He would have signed his divorce papers and moved on, not hiding in his work.
It struck her forcibly that she might never have met a man like Owen Shaw. Her childhood had been fairly sheltered. She’d constantly been surrounded by intellectuals, men and women who were far more concerned with their work than anything else.
The ground beneath her shifted and the elevator dropped what felt like ten feet, but she knew in her head it was mere inches. Her heart rate tripled, and she grabbed on to the closest thing she could—him.
His arms went around her, holding her up, and she heard it. He was so tall that her head naturally rested on his chest, and she could hear his heart beating in rapid time.
He was nervous.
The phone rang and Owen cursed, reaching out to grab it. The shaft was so small, he didn’t have to let her go to grasp it.
“What the bloody hell is happening, Colin?”
She could hear his voice over the line. “Sorry. So sorry. We had to lower the shaft the tiniest bit. I should have warned you. It’s not going to fall. Just needed to reposition to get to the problem. Not long now. Another half an hour or so and I’ll have you right out of there.”
“If you do that again, do you know what I’m going to do to you, Colin?”
There was a pause over the line and she could practically hear Colin’s gulp. “Write my father a tersely worded letter of complaint?”
“No, I’m going to pull your heart out through your throat and then I’ll shove it back up your arse.”
“You sound very much like Liam Neeson in that movie.”
“Liam Neeson is Irish. I’m a Scot. I assure you what I’ll do to you will make you run into Liam Neeson’s arms and beg him to save you.” He reached back and hung up the phone with a resounding clang.
His arm went back around her. “It’s going to be all right. They’ll move faster now. So you’ve taken a sabbatical from men.”
She breathed him in, loving how he smelled. Were men supposed to smell so good?
She could feel herself relax as he held her. She’d known him for three hours. She shouldn’t let him hold her like this.
And why the fuck not? Because it wasn’t smart? Because he might think she wanted something she shouldn’t?
She was human. Why shouldn’t she want him? Because society told her that good girls didn’t make out with guys they’d just met in an elevator?
Society sucked, and she wasn’t a good girl. When her husband had tried to put his name on her work, she’d told him to fuck off and write his own paper. When he’d cheated on her, she’d walked away.
She was single.
God, was he single?
She stepped back.
“What’s wrong?” Owen asked.
“Do you have a girlfriend?”
His lips curled up in the sweetest grin, as though he knew exactly why she was asking that question. “No, love. I don’t have a girlfriend and I don’t have a wife.”
He was single. She was single.
The moment lengthened between them.
He stepped back. “I’m sorry. I’m coming on way too strong.”
He wasn’t. He’d been gentlemanly, friendly. Up until the last couple of moments, he hadn’t put a hand on her or leered. She could feel his attraction. It was there in the warm way he looked at her, in the set of his shoulders, relaxed earlier and tense now that he’d touched her. He was thinking about the same thing she was.
“I’m very nervous, Owen. My logical mind knows that it’s far more likely for me to die getting hit by lightning than in an elevator, even one that’s stuck.” Unfortunately, her logical mind was slowly losing control of her dumbass lizard brain.
“Will talking help?” Owen asked. “Because I’m willing to do that. Or whatever you need to take your mind off things.”
There was a wealth of promise in those words. Dirty and sweet at the same time. They’d shared her wine, passing it back and forth between them, her lips touching the same place his had been moments before. When she’d drank after him, she’d thought about kissing him.
It had been too long. Two years was way too long to go without sex.
They had a half an hour or so. At least that’s what Colin—who might be murdered soon by Owen Shaw—said. She even thought his name was sexy.
What exactly would it hurt if she did kiss him? If she touched him and let him touch her? Hell, what would it hurt if she fucked him? They were both single, both a little needy. They had some time to kill. They’d done everything else.
“I would like to kiss you.” If he didn’t want her to, he could say no and they could find something else to do. She wasn’t going to be embarrassed because some guy didn’t want her. Some stunningly gorgeous guy. Some really funny, sexy guy. After all, she wouldn’t see him after this. She’d never seen him before. He’d told her he was moving in, but she went into work early and came home late. He was a bodyguard, so he likely worked odd hours and traveled a lot.
He was safe. She could open that door, enjoy herself, and then close it again. Owen Shaw could be her first really good memory in a long time, the start of many because it was time to get serious about finding some joy and balance in her life.
But only if he wanted some joy, too.
He moved back, placing his back against the elevator wall, the sweetest smile lighting up his face. “You have no idea how much I want you to kiss me. I’m right here, love. Do your worst.”
He was letting her make the first move. And probably the second. And the third. He was obviously a careful man. It would be easier if he took over, but he was right. This needed to be her choice, and she had to make the move.
She’d been the girl who’d told her parents at the age of five that kindergarten was boring and she wanted to move through the grades until she found something challenging. When they’d told her they wanted her to slow down and enjoy her childhood, she’d gone on strike until the teachers at her school begged her parents to let them move her up.
She was the girl who’d put it all on hold to take care of her mother, too.
She wasn’t the girl who didn’t take what she wanted, and she wanted Owen Shaw.
“It’s been a long time since I did this.” But her body was already heating up. Her body remembered. Her marriage might have sucked, but the sex had been fairly good. It had been the reason she’d married him. She’d gotten used to regular, good sex.
She’d get used to it again, just on her terms this time.
“Somehow, I think you’ll remember,” he said. “You play all you like. Stop when you want to.”
She’d been right about him. He was a careful man. “And if I don’t want to stop?”
“Then you should be happy I’m a man who believes in being prepared.”

They’re not the only ones on the prowl…but they’re the most dangerous…

They’re going international to take down a killer and he can guard Valerie all day long. But guard his heart? He doesn’t stand a chance.

REVIEW: YOU HAD ME AT JAGUAR is the sixth instalment in Terry Spear’s contemporary, adult HEART OF THE JAGUAR paranormal, romance series. This is she-jaguar Enforcer Valerie Chambers, and United Shifter Force (USF) Agent Howard Armstrong’s story line. YOU HAD ME AT JAGUAR can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Valerie and Howard) YOU HAD ME AT JAGUAR follows the building relationship between she-jaguar Enforcer Valerie Chambers, and United Shifter Force (USF) Agent Howard Armstrong. Valerie Chambers’ latest assignment as a member of the Enforcer Team is to hunt, and take down a killer; a jaguar male who killed his newly turned mate, then ran to places unknown. While on assignment Val will come face to face with former Enforcer, and new USF agent Howard Armstrong, whose own assignment is to shadow and protect our story line heroine. What ensues is the building relationship and romance between Val and Howard, and the potential fall-out as several investigations cross paths in Belize, placing the Enforcers and USF team in the line of fire.

As a Enforcer, Valerie’s job is to take down the worst rogue shifters, and sometimes the human who were killing jaguars or shifters in the wild but never had Valerie suspected that the USF would assign backup, on her latest solo mission. Howard Armstrong’s attraction to Valerie began during Valerie’s training as a jaguar Enforcer. Now, months later Howard ‘volunteered’ along with his USF partner and wolf-shifter Jillian Greystoke, to cover and protect the woman with whom he is falling in love.

Meanwhile Valerie’s parents, and jaguar Guardians are on an assignment of their own, tracking a drug dealer in Belize, who may or may not have connections to the jaguar shifters, and the man for whom Valerie and Howard are on the hunt.

The relationship between Valerie and Howard is one of mutual attraction; a friends to lovers romance heightened by their current working assignments that forces our couple to work and live in close proximity. The quick building romance is fated, passionate and hot.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including human homicide detective Rowdy Sanderson whom we have met on a number of previous occasions; wolf shifters Jillian Greystoke and her mate Vaughn ; Valerie’s parents; Izzie Summerfield- a woman whose life is about to change, and jaguar female Emmie Bancoft. The requisite evil has many faces including jaguar and murderer Benny Canton.

The world building continues to look at the law enforcement and secret society of shifters; their private police and investigative forces, as well as the political hierarchy of the shifter nation.

YOU HAD ME AT JAGUAR is a character driven story line of family, friendship, betrayal and love but a story line with more telling than showing driven by the conversations between most of the characters. There is some redundancy and repetition when the characters restate or explain previous conversations. The premise is engaging; the romance is seductive; the characters are numerous, colorful and energetic. YOU HAD ME AT JAGUAR is a fast paced and intriguing story of shifters and the human world of which they inhabit.

As soon as he’d seen the striking redhead again, he was reminded of how she’d pinned him down during training. She’d cast him the wickedest smile. With his back on the floor and her on top of him, he couldn’t help smiling back at her. Of course, after her unorthodox move, the testers had made a new rule—no one was to move before the bell rang—because they were afraid they’d have chaos otherwise. When they’d mentioned the new rules, Howard had glanced in Val’s direction, and she’d given him a cat-that-ate-the-mouse look similar to the one he’d given her when she was lying on top of him at the training. He’d smiled back at her, thinking they might really have had a chance to date.
The three branches—the Enforcers, JAG, and Guardians—all had a common mission: deal with jaguar shifters who posed a threat to humans and shifters alike, though each handled different situations. The Guardians focused more on providing aid to injured jaguars, while the JAG went after the rogues, or humans who were dealing in jaguars. The end result—incarceration or death for the rogues—depended on the situation. The Enforcers were sent to terminate murdering jaguars. Period. They didn’t consider jail time for the offender.
Howard and Jillian were now with the USF, a special section of the JAG that took care of jaguars and wolves creating trouble or in trouble. They were currently the only two agents who had a break between cases. Since Howard was a former Enforcer, his boss felt he would be right for the job. The branches worked together when necessary, but usually all the agents involved would be well aware of the situation.
Jillian was mated to Vaughn, a gray wolf SEAL who was busy tracking down a murderous wolf with the two other jaguar team members of the USF. They hadn’t needed Jillian and Howard too.
Jillian got another text, the fourth one in a half hour. She texted back.
Howard didn’t have to guess who it was from. “Vaughn should have taken you with him.”
“This guy that Val is trying to neutralize is supposed to be a lot less violent than the one Vaughn’s team is trying to track down. At least as far as the general population is concerned. Benny’s wife was a different story.”
“I still wish Martin had allowed us to tell Val we are here watching her back.”
“The boss said she doesn’t like working with anyone else. Since many Enforcers work alone, she’d think her boss felt she couldn’t handle the case on her own. How well do you know her?” Jillian asked.
“I’ve been in training with her. Never worked with her though. She’s got some kick-ass moves, and I have to say she’s extremely quick-witted.”
Jillian smiled at him. “Did she ever get the best of you?”
He gave her a dark smile back. “Not that I’d ever admit to.” He ordered another beer. “You know, her mother, Gladys, was the first female Enforcer we had, and she and her mate, Jasper, are still on the force.”
“Wow. They don’t want to leave all the excitement behind?”
“That’s about it. They’re both good people, wanting to right the wrong and deal with the bad guys. And Gladys wanted to prove to her dad, who was an Enforcer, that she could do as good a job as any man. She and her mate have one of the highest success rates for eliminating rogue jaguars. They make a great team. But there has to be a time when Enforcers need to retire, when they might not be as quick to react or as strong as they had once been. Their boss just doesn’t want to force retirement on them. Not while they’ve been so successful, despite being in their golden years.”
“I think it’s great. Better to die doing what you love than live to an old age wishing you were still fighting the good fight.”
He smiled at Jillian. “Easy for you to say. Your kind lives much longer than we do. What a deal.”
“True. You know, Val’s been watching you. And she’s been watching the entrance. Do you think she’s onto us?”
“I doubt it. What would the odds be that Martin would send two of his USF agents to protect an Enforcer in a simple takedown operation without her being informed?”
“Not likely. Do you want to dance?” Jillian grabbed Howard’s hand before he could object.
“Hell, do you want this to get back to Vaughn? As a SEAL wolf, he’d kill me.”
Jillian laughed. “He knows we’re undercover, and this is just for fun. You never dated Val?”
“No. I never dated anyone in the Enforcer branch. How do you know she’s been watching me?” he asked as they danced to the loud beat, the lights flashing all over the dance floor. “Wait. It was when you went to the ladies’ room. That’s why you took so long to return. You were observing her.”
“And others. And you.”
“Me? I wasn’t about to blow our cover. What if she had a meltdown because we’re here to protect her?”
“You did good. You only looked her way five times and only when she was busy ordering a drink, telling a patron to bug off, and looking around at other people at the time. If you had caught her eye though, then what?”
“I would have waved. She knows me. I know her. It would be foolish to pretend I didn’t recognize her.”
They continued to dance to the faster beat, which Howard was glad for. He really didn’t want Vaughn to get any ideas about him and Jillian.
“You ought to ask her to dance. You’re no longer an Enforcer. Then she’ll know we’re not together in a boyfriend/girlfriend way. It might help our mission if it looks like we’re just here to have fun.”
“She’s on a job.”
“Right. But you aren’t supposed to know that. You’d be her cover too, though she wouldn’t realize it.”
“All right. You just don’t want it to get back to your mate that I only danced with you.”
Jillian laughed.
He led her back to the table, but the next dance was a slow dance, and he wasn’t going to ask Val then. Not that he didn’t want to, but he hated being here under false pretenses, as far as Val was concerned. What if they got a little too hot and heavy on the dance floor, as he’d like to with her, and then she learned he was only there on an assignment?
He sat down across from Jillian.
She smiled. “Coward.”
“Next dance.” But it was a slow one too. “Next fast dance,” he clarified.
