REVIEW: DARK NIGHT is instalment 13.5 in Donna King’s contemporary, adult DARK KINGS paranormal/fantasy series, and the latest instalment in the multi-authored 1001 Dark Nights series. This is coral dragon Dorian, and billionaire philanthropist Alexandra Sheridan’s story line. DRAGON NIGHT can be read as a stand alone but for back story and cohesion, I recommend reading the series in order.

SOME BACKGROUND: The DARK KINGS is a spinoff from Donna Grant’s DARK WARRIOR series which in turn is a spin off from Donna’s DARK SWORD series- all set in the Highlands of Scotland. The Dark Fae and their King Taraeth, along with the Silver Dragon Mikkel have declared war on the Dragon Kings by exposing the dragon’s existence to humankind. The last wars between man and the world of the paranormal saw a great loss of life on all sides but someone or something is determined to push the Dragons back into another war; Mikkel wants to become King of the Silvers, Queen Usaeil of the Light Fae has set her sights on claiming King Constantine as her mate, and the Dark Fae want the Dragon’s hidden weapon in order to rule Scotland and the rest of the world.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Dorian and Alexandra) DRAGON NIGHT follows the building relationship between coral dragon Dorian, and billionaire philanthropist Alexandra Sheridan. A Fae artifact, dating back to the last war between dragons and human, has been located in New York. All attempts to purchase the object have been met with negativity and refusal by the current owner, billionaire philanthropist Alexandra Sheridan, and she has no intentions of giving up any part of her family collection. King Constantine needs to awaken one of the remaining sleeping Dragon Kings, in an attempt to procure the unknown object but the dragon in question despises the human race. Enter Coral Dragon King Dorian, asleep in the mountains for millions of years, and the dragon sent to get up close and personal with the object’s current owner. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Alexandra and Dorian, and the potential fall-out as Dorian is targeted by an unknown assailant.

DRAGON NIGHT is a revealing story line where Dorian confesses a little more about the last great war between the dragons and humans, and the ensuing aftermath wherein the Dragon Kings were sent to sleep. The Druids and Dark Fae appear to have aligned themselves with a powerful foe; Queen Usaeil is not above playing dirty to get who and what she wants; and Rhi is caught between allegiance and love.

Donna Grant’s DARK KINGS is a captivating and intriguing series that continues to build with each successive instalment. Along with the author’s Reaper Series, the potential for war, and the list of combatants is growing in possibility and numbers. The relationship between Dorian and Alexandra is one of immediate attraction, and Con’s acceptance of humans for dragon mates is going much smoother than anyone could have imagined.
