From the moment Quinn Montgomery sat behind her first snare and cymbal set, she was destined for fame and glory. As Hush Note’s infamous female drummer, she sets the rhythm for the band’s chart-toppings hits. When people tap their feet to their music, it’s to her pulse.

Quinn is content to live in a world away from her family and the cage of her youth. Her only regret is leaving Graham Hayes behind without a goodbye. No matter how many sold-out stadiums she plays, no matter how many crowds sing her songs, his voice haunts her when the music stops.

When a family tragedy forces her to return home to Montana, she plans to leave the second she’s paid her respects. But seeing Graham again turns her life upside down. As a boy, he wasn’t able to make her stay. As a man, he might be her future.

If they can mend their rifts and find solace in the refrains.

REVIEW:RIFTS AND REFRAINS by Devney Perry is the second instalment in the multi-authored HUSH NOTE rock, romance series focusing on the members of the rock band Hush Note. This is twenty-seven year olds, single father / builder Graham Hayes, and drummer for Hush Note Quinn Montgomery’s story line. RIFTS AND REFRAINS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual first person perspectives ( Quinn and Graham) RIFTS AND REFRAINS is a story of second chances between twenty-seven year olds, single father / builder Graham Hayes, and drummer for Hush Note Quinn Montgomery. Nine years earlier, high school sweethearts Quinn Montgomery and Graham Hayes were destroyed when Quinn felt it was time to leave her hometown of Bozeman, Montana in the face of her father’s anger and fury. Fast forward to present day wherein Quinn Montgomery, now an award winning rock superstar returns to Bozeman to say goodbye to the grandmother she lost but facing the only man she had ever loved meant facing the demons that continued to rip at her heart, demons that would remind Quinn why she ran, and would probably run again. What ensues is the rekindling romance and relationship between Graham and Quinn, and the potential fall-out as Quinn’s time in Bozeman comes to a close.

Graham Hayes struggled in the aftermath of Quinn’s departure from Bozeman Montana. Believing Quinn had betrayed the people she loved, Graham moved on, never have forgotten or forgiven the woman that once called to his heart. Quinn Montgomery knew her return home would come with the memories of a time long ago, and the reminder of what was and what may never be again but memories also bring back the happier times including the times with the man she never stopped loving.

We are introduced to Quinn’s parents Bradley and Ruby , and her brother Walker and his wife Mindy, their sister Brooklyn; Graham’s son Colin, and his parents Don and Eileen Hayes; Quinn’s band mates Nixon and Jonas, as well as their tour manager Ethan. Nixon’s story line is next in Muses and Melodies.

RIFTS AND REFRAINS is a story of family, friendships, relationships and love; a story of misunderstand and miscommunication; dysfunctional family values, forgiveness and happily ever afters. The premise is emotional and heart breaking; the romance is seductive and passionate; the characters are energetic and dynamic.

NOTE: The excerpt is intended for mature audiences due to strong language and content.

She took one step before stopping. A smile tugged at the corner of her mouth, the same corner I’d kissed earlier, and I fought the urge to stand and capture that mouth again. Her smile broadened, though there was pain in her eyes.“Colin is a cool kid. You’re a good dad, Graham. I always knew you would be.”

She might as well have stabbed me in the chest.

“Thanks,” I said, watching as she walked away.

Fuck me.

When had I never loved that woman?

Maybe that kiss had woken me up. Maybe it had made me realize how goddamn lonely I’d been without her. I had Colin, but there was a corner of my heart that would always belong to Quinn.

I should have followed her nine years ago.
Because now it was too late.
