Description:
The dead tell no tales, unless they have grave witch Alex Craft to speak for them. When a paranormal war threatens, Alex’s unique abilities might be the only thing that can stop our world from being changed forever.

Review:

Grave Destiny by Kalayna Price is the 6 book in her Alex Craft series.  Alex is a grave witch, who runs an investigation firm, using her ability to rise the dead and talk to them.  Alex now has more magical fae ability, such as plane weaving, but she does not know how to handle this magic; she is also beholden to the Winter Queen (as an independent fae that other courts would love to have), but she tries to stay away from the Winter Court as much as possible and live in the human realm.

Prince Dugan of the Shadow Court comes to visit Alex to ask for help in a murder investigation.  Before she has a chance to accept or turn Dugan down, Falin, and the Winter Queen’s  Knight comes barging into Alex’s office to warn her about Dugan. With men not trusting each other, Alex agrees to take the case, since it affects both the Shadow Court and the Winter Court.  Of course, both men will stay close as Alex enters the Fae world as she works on discovering what happened to the two men (from both courts) who were mysteriously murdered.

What follows is an exciting and at times intense story that takes place in Fairie land through most of the book and  where Alex, Falin and Dugan discover that the murders are an attempt to start an all out war between the Shadow and the Winter Court; but the question is who is behind this.  With Alex in the center, she finds herself in some life threatening situations a number of times, including being affected by a incurable disease.   Will Alex survive?  Who is the betrayer?

There are so many twists and turns, keeping us guessing until the very end. While this is going on, we get to see Alex finally get some help learning how to handle her planeweaver ability, but she has a long way to go.  She will need everything she has to stay alive, and it seems there are many from the various courts that either wants Alex for themselves or to kill her.  Dugan was very good in helping Alex, but it was Falin, who showed his true feelings for Alex. Will she let herself trust him and fall for him again?

This is a complicated review, as it would require giving spoilers.  Grave Destiny was an exciting, action packed, interesting and wild adventure, as Alex tries to solve this case and come out of it alive.  Kalayna Price pulls a mind boggling twist at the end, that leaves us totally in shock. I have heard rumors that this book might be the end of the series, however with this unbelievable change, there is no way that we will be left hanging.  The Alex Craft seriesis written very well by Kalayna Price, and it is a fun series.

Grave Ransom by Kalayna Price – Review, Excerpt & Giveaway

Grave Ransom Banner

Grave RansomAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Grave witch Alex Craft is no stranger to the dead talking. She raises shades, works with ghosts, and is dating Death himself. But the dead walking? That’s not supposed to happen. And yet, reanimated corpses are committing crimes across Nekros City.

Alex’s investigation leads her deep into a web of sinister magic. When Briar Darque of the Magical Crimes Investigation Bureau gets involved, Alex finds herself with an unexpected ally of sorts. But as the dead continue to rise and wreak havoc on the living, can Alex get to the soul of the matter in time?

Review:

Grave Ransom by Kalayna Price is the 5th book in her Alex Craft series. Grave Ransom picks up a short time after Grave Visions leaves off.   Alex runs an investigation firm, mostly to do with magical issues, such as talking to the dead, which is her specialty.  When a young girl hires Alex to find her missing boyfriend, Alex has no idea how this simple case will turn out to be a wild crazy adventure of real life zombies.

Alex will find the missing boyfriend robbing a bank; she uses her magic to be able to tell that the three robbers are actually dead, occupied by different souls.  Before Alex can do anything, the police arrive and the robbers, including the boyfriend are dead, and the souls are collected by the reapers.

The police are baffled, and Briar Darque, magical crimes investigator, returns to take over the case, and forcing Alex to work with her.  Falin, Alex’s ex boyfriend, and a Fae agent, will also play a big part in helping solve this complex case, which is suspected to be the work of a necromancer.   How can someone put souls into dead bodies?

Alex is still besieged with her eye problems, whenever she uses her magic.  Though they are not really friends, Briar began to see Alex and her magic in another light; at the same time having no problem putting Alex in the middle of danger as bait.  It was nice to see some of the other characters that have been part of this series; Falin, Death, Tamara, Rianna, etc.

This is a complicated review, as it would require giving spoilers.  Grave Ransom was an exciting, interesting and wild adventure, as Alex tries to solve this mysterious case.   In this book, both Falin and Death played smaller parts, and there are a few twists along the way.   Not much was further revealed about which court Alex leans toward, as she has one year to decide. Currently she lives partially under the Winter Queen. We know nothing more about this or the other courts pursuing her.   This is a fun series written very well by Kalayna Price.  It is important to start with the first book to understand everything.

Excerpt

The first time I realized I could feel corpses, I had nightmares for a week. I was a child at the time, so that was understandable. These days I was accustomed to the clammy reach of the grave that lifted from dead bodies. To the eerie feeling of my own innate magic responding and filling me with the unrequested knowledge of how recently the person died, their gender, and the approximate age they were at death. When I anticipated encountering a corpse, I tightened my mental shields and worked at keeping my magic at bay. Usually that was only necessary at places like graveyards, the morgue, and funeral homes—places one might expect to find a body.
I never expected to feel a corpse walking across the street in the middle of the Magic Quarter.
“Alex? I’ve lost you, haven’t I?” Tamara, one of my best friends and my current lunchmate, asked. She sighed, twisting in her seat to scan the sidewalk beyond the small outdoor sitting area of the café where we were eating. “Huh. Which one is he? I may be married and knocked up, but I know a good-looking man when I see one, and girl, I don’t see one. Who are you staring at?”
“That guy,” I said, nodding my head at a man in a brown suit crossing the street.
Tamara glanced at the squat, middle-aged man who was more than a little soft in the middle and then cocked an eyebrow at me. “I’ve seen what you have at home, so I take it this is business. Did you bring one of your cases to our lunch?”
I ignored the “at home” comment, as that situation was more than a little complicated, and shook my head. “My case docket is clear,” I said absently, and let my senses stretch. When I concentrated, I could feel grave essence reaching from corpses in my vicinity. All corpses. There were decades of dead and decaying rats in the sewer below the streets, and smaller creatures like insects that barely made a blip on my radar, but like called to like, and my magic zeroed in on the man.
“He’s dead,” I said, and even to me my voice sounded unsure.
Tamara blinked at me, likely waiting for me to reveal the joke. Instead I pushed out of my seat as the man turned up the street. Tamara grabbed my arm.
“I’m the lead medical examiner for Nekros City, and I can tell you with ninety-nine point nine percent certainty that the man walking down the street is very much alive.” She put extra emphasis on the word “walking,” and on any other day, I would have agreed with her.
My own eyes agreed with her. But my magic, that part of me that touched the grave, that could piece together shades from the memories left in every cell of a body, disagreed. That man, walking or not, was a corpse. Granted, he was a fresh one—the way he felt to my magic told me he couldn’t have been dead more than an hour. But he was dead.
So how the hell had he just walked into the Museum of Magic and the Arcane?
I dropped enough crumpled dollars on the table to cover my portion of the bill and tip before weaving around tables and out of the café seating. Behind me, Tamara grumbled under her breath, but after a moment I heard her chair slide back as she pushed away from the table. I didn’t wait for her to follow me out as I all but sprinted across the street to catch up with the walking corpse.
The museum’s wards tingled along my skin as I stepped through the threshold. I’d been inside the museum a few times, and the collection of rare and unusual artifacts from both pre- and post-awakening was impressive, but I was a sensitive, capable of sensing magic, and between all the security wards and the artifacts themselves, the museum tended to be overwhelming. Definitely migraine-inducing in large doses. I noted that the magic in the air was particularly biting today, like one of the security wards had recently been triggered. I sucked in an almost pained breath, trying to adjust to the sudden crush of magic all around me. The extra sting of the deployed ward didn’t help.
I should have walked the extra few steps to clear the entrance wards.

Grave VisionsAmazon / Barnes & Noble / BAM / The Book Depository

Description:
If you want to hear voices from the dead in Nekros City, you call Alex Craft. She’s a Grave Witch with reasonable rates and extraordinary powers, who specializes in revealing the secrets of the dead. But now she’s the one fighting to keep her own secret. She’s not human—and her newly discovered heritage is causing havoc for her both in the human realm and in Faerie. But her status as an unaffiliated fae also makes her an ideal candidate to investigate a new street drug that has surfaced in several of the spaces between the human and fae worlds.

This glamour-infused drug causes hallucinations that turn real—at least for a while and often with deadly consequences. Searching for the source of this drug—and its purpose—lands Alex front and center in the conflict brewing in Faerie and she must find answers before she’s dragged so deep she loses her freedom.

Review:

Grave Visions by Kalayna Price is the 4th book in her Alex Craft series. It has been a long time since I read the 3rd book, Grave Memory…4 years to be exact. Finally Kalayna Price has returned to the wonderful world of Alex Craft. In Grave Visions, we pick up shortly after the last book left off. I had to read my reviews as a refresher, but Price manages to give us past information along the way. Is this a standalone type of book? No it is not. You need to go back to the first book Grave Witch, and learn about Alex, Falin, the Fae, and the reaper (Death). Alex being a Grave Witch, has the ability of be able to talk to the dead; she found out recently that after living all her life as a human, she is truly fae.

Alex is determined to stay in the human world, where she is happy, but her health has begun to deteriorate, and she must align herself with one of the Fae courts to survive. Who will she pick? As we know from previous books, Alex is living in the territory under the control of the Winter Queen, whom her ex love, Falin is sworn to. Death, who is a soul collector, is her current love, but this is a forbidden relationship for him. Alex has feelings for both, but each has their own issues.

Alex is pulled into a case where people are dying, after taking some unknown drugs that make fears come true. While she is investigating this, Alex is ordered to meet with the Winter Queen, who wants her to pull up a dead faerie, and find out who killed her. The Queen orders Alex to solve this case, and will allow her to become independent for a year, giving Alex time to choose a court, and be healthy in that time period. The Queen has been acting weird, and she needs to know who is trying to take over the Winter Throne.

Alex with help from Falin, will discover that both cases are tied together. A major betrayal will be behind the murders, as both Alex and Falin find their lives very much in danger, with a very exciting last half of the book. Will Alex and Falin survive the attempts on their lives? Will the Winter Queen believe their findings or have them killed?

The part of Alex choosing her court gets more interesting as the story continues. All the courts want Alex to affiliate with them. Dugan, a shadow court prince, and the King of Shadows are two more interesting characters that are offering Alex to join them. Looks like more fun to come. Kalayna Price continues to weave a wonderful story that has us invested in her great characters, both good and evil. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

An Interview and Giveaway with Kalayna Price

An Interview with Kalayna Price

The Reading Cafe is thrilled to have Kalayna Price with us today.

This is a very busy time for Kalayna, as she has just released her third book in her Alex Craft series, and will also release her third book in her Novels of Haven very soon.

Let’s meet Kalayna.

Hi Kalayna.  Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions today.  We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

TRC: Can you please tell us about yourself?

Kalayna: Well, I’m the author of two urban fantasy series, the Alex Craft novels and the novels of Haven. I’m also a hoop-dancer, a painter, a photographer and recently I decided to learn violin (in all that free time I don’t have. LOL. Of course, I’m also an avid reader.

TRC: When and how did you become interested in writing?  Have you always liked to write?

Kalayna:I started my first ‘novel’ at twelve. It was one of many false starts. I didn’t get serious about writing until I was twenty-three. Then I actually sat down and worked through the stumbling blocks that had always stopped me before and wrote my first real novel in just under three months.

TRC:  We see in your bio, you like to paint or take pictures with a camera.  Is this your hobby, or perhaps a way for you to relax and get more ideas to write?

Kalayna: Both are hobbies. Photography reminds me to stop and actually look at the world, so you could say it influences my writing. Painting is simply a relaxing hobby these days. It let’s me transfer my thoughts into a different medium.

TRC: What was your first book published?  ONCE BITTEN from the Haven novels?

Kalayna: Yes, Once Bitten was my very first novel, both written and published
.

TRC:  How did you come up with the idea of Kita and the Haven Novels?  The third book in this series, Third Blood comes out in August. How many books do you plan for this series?

Kalayna: Ideas are so hard to pinpoint. Writers are like sponges—we suck up all the information around us. There it simmers until something new emerges. Kita and several of the other characters just showed up one day and started talking. So I’m sure many things inspired them, but I couldn’t tell you exactly what. As far as my plans for the series. There will be two main arcs over the course of six books. Third Blood will end the first arc and start the second, so I’m very excited to share it.

TRC: Can you tell those who are new to your books the premise of the Haven Novels.

Kalayna: The stories follow Kita Nekai, a shapeshifter on the run from her clan and responsibilities. In the first book she gets turned into a vampire and drawn into the underworld of a city called Haven. If she thought being the smallest shifter was hard, being a dead one really sucks. Literally.

TRC: The Alex Craft novels is your other series, with the third book, GRAVE MEMORY out this month.  How many books do you plan for this series?

Kalayna: I have a definite end planned for the series, but I’m not sure how many books it will take for Alex to reach that end. Currently six books are contracted for the series.

TRC: Can you tell us the premise of Alex Craft, and also something about Grave Memory.

Kalayna: Alex Craft is a grave witch, which means she draws the memories from the dead in the form of shades. She uses this ability in her PI business and also to assist the police. Unfortunately, business isn’t going well, so she’s broke. When a case involving a dark cop, a sexy reaper, and a soul silencing killer lands at her feet, she has no choice but to take it. But this case might cost her more than her rent—it may cost her soul.

TRC: Both Alex Craft and the Haven Novels are Urban Fantasy.  Do you ever think about writing another genre in the future?

Kalayna: I have a couple ideas on the back burner, including a futuristic dystopian and a YA, but right now I’m focusing on only these two series.

TRC: You consider your writing genre as Urban Fantasy.  How do you explain to someone-what is Urban Fantasy literature?

Kalayna: Urban Fantasy is a mixed genre. At it’s most basic level it is a story in which fantastical elements are essential to the plot. But books in the genre also draw strongly from other genres so most have elements of romance, horror, humor, and/or mystery. The voice can be anything from a sassy chick lit to a dark noir. It really is a diverse and fascinating genre.

TRC: Who is your favorite Author?  Did this author inspire you to write urban fantasy?

Kalayna: Oh, that is too hard to narrow down. I love tons of writers, both in and outside my genre. I will say though, until I was about fifteen I wrote mostly High/Epic Fantasy. Then I read the early Anita Blake novels and wanted more of the same, but at that time, the genre didn’t exist. So I started writing what it was I wanted to read—which later became known as Urban Fantasy.

TRC: What is your favorite book you have read?

Kalayna: If I can’t narrow down an author, I definitely can’t narrow down a single book!

TRC: What are you currently working on?

Kalayna: I’m currently finishing up a Haven Novel and am about to start the next Alex Craft novel.

LIGHTNING ROUND

Favorite Food: Breakfast

Favorite Movie: Labyrinth or Princess Bride

Favorite TV Show: Don’t really have one

Last Movie that you saw: Despicable Me

Last book that you read: I’m currently reading Blood and Bullets by James R Tuck

Favorite Character from books you have read: Oh no, definitely can’t narrow that one down.

Last vacation destination: Uh. I can’t remember the last time I took anything but working vacations. I should put vacation on my to-do list. ^_^

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Kalanya: Thank you so much for having me here. I’ve had a lot of fun.

TRC: Thank you, Kalayna for answering our questions. The Reading Café wishes you the best of luck with both Grave Memory and Third Blood.  We look forward to talking with you again in the future.

Kalayna: You as well!

Once Bitten by Kalayna Price – a Review

Once Bitten by Kalanya Price – a Review

Once Bitten by Kalayna Price is the first book in her Haven series., which is considered Urban Fantasy.  The heroine in this book is Kita, who is a cat shapeshifter, and she has been in hiding for years, from her clan and the clan’s leader, her father.  Kita, who shifts into a calico cat, ran away because she didn’t feel her little cat belonged with the larger cats, and she would be the heir apparent.    She lives and barely survives in a town called Haven.

I thought the story started a bit slow, as Price tried to lead into the story, introducing us to Haven, and its underworld, but it does pick up quickly.  Kita can sense hunters chasing her, and knows her father has sent them to find her, and return her to the clan, something Kita does not want.  When she needs to find a place to live, or food, Kita will shift into her cat, and live as someone’s pet.  But on this occasion, she finds herself in a bar as a human, and is drugged.  While running away to try escape, she is attacked by a hunter.  When she wakes up, a strange woman is trying to heal her.  She learns from the woman and the man who saved her, that she is now a vampire.  A shapeshifter, who can no longer shift, and now must drink blood to survive.

Kita is not your normal heroine.  She is feisty, totally independent, and very difficult to control.  Nathanial, a vampire, who is known as The Hermit, is the one who turned her, but he did so to save her life from the Hunter.  He tells Kita that it was an accident, and he is sorry.  But as you will see, she gives him a hard time, not forgiving him, even if he saved her. Knowing she knows nothing of how to survive as a vampire, Nathaniel follows and stays with Kita throughout her upcoming ordeal.  He is enamored by her, which surprises him, as he is not known as the Hermit for nothing.

We also meet her ex boyfriend, Bobby, who shifts into bobcat, wants her to go home.  He also part of the entourage that follows Kita.  Things turn from bad to worse for Kita.  A Mage Judge appears out of nowhere to accuse her of being a rogue, and sentences her to an immediate death.   Nathanial convinces the judge to allow Kita to find the real rogue, and the judge gives her three days, or she will die.  He gives her a student scholar (Gil) to study her, while they try to find the rogue.  At this point, the story starts to get interesting, with a lot more action.

This is a worldbuilding of cat and wolf shifters, vampires, vampire councils, mages, rogues, hunters, and other normal supernatural characters.  As we follow Kita, and her three other companions to find the rogue, before its too late, so many things happen along the way.  You get to enjoy the possible romance building between Kita and Nathanial, though Kita continues to treat him with disgust.  But Nathanial is determined to teach Kita how to survive, despite her stubbornness, and at times difficult behavior.   I liked Nathanial right from the start, and wasn’t crazy at times how Kita treated him, no matter how hard he tried to help her.  But there was a lot of action and at times it was funny to see how Bobby reacted to Kita being a vampire, and Gil’s reaction to anything.  These parts were fun.

Kalayna Price does a good job creating these characters.  Kita is different then most heroines; she is strong, and way to stubborn, and refuses to admit to her growing feelings for Nathanial; you see her flaws, and yet you know her strengths.  In the action packed last third of the book, Kita fights to save herself, and the others.  She is a strong heroine, and the end was a wild ending.  Price leaves us with a cliffhanger, that forces us to get the next book, as Kita’s story continues.  What will happen with her and Nathanial? What happens with the Vampire council?  Will Bobby recognize that he will never have Kita?  Will Kita ever return to her father and their clan, now that she is a vampire?  Will Kita learn how to drink blood and survive as a vampire?  To find those answers, we need to read the next book….Twice Dead.
