Description:
Tori Duarte’s big dreams to be a video game designer…well, they haven’t panned out. And a girl’s got to eat. Enter: the Stadium, a secretive video game gambling ring. As a world ranked eGamer, winning should be cake. Until it’s not. Gambling debts suck her in deep.

A chance encounter with the media shy, ridiculously handsome video game CEO Noah Harrison offers her a way out. The deal: 1) Assist the FBI to catch the underworld eGaming kingpin (doable but dangerous). 2) Keep the FBI connection secret by pretending to date Noah (not optional but keeping it PG is problematic).

What neither expects is an explosive chemistry that’s more than convincing—it’s sizzling. Falling for each other is the most dangerous thing they could do…

Review:

Off Her Game by Zoe Forward is the first book in her new Game Lords series.  I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started reading this series, as it was a different type of read from what I was used to with Zoe Forward. I am happy to say that I really enjoyed this book.

Tori Duarte, our heroine, is one of the best elite gamers, which is especially unique for a female.  Tori also designs video games, hoping to sell them to make money to pay off her debts, which forces her to be involved with a secret gambling ring.

Noah Harrison, our hero, is the CEO and co owner of a game company, known to many as Game Lords. Noah, is a wealthy and handsome bachelor, who is an introvert and shy around women and media.  But when he meets Tori, he finds himself very attracted to the badass gamer.  But Noah and his partner have agreed to help the FBI find out who is behind the secret gambling ring that is murdering people who worked for them, especially since one of the victims was their brother.

Tori is pulled into the FBI sting, since she needs money, and also knows she too is in danger.  Noah will join hands with Tori to pretend to be dating, which draws the attention of the evil gaming kingpin.  During their adventure, they will both begin to fall in love with each other, though Tori cannot believe that Noah could possibly care about a girl like her. There chemistry was very steamy.

What follows is an exciting, suspenseful and fun story. I am amazed how well Zoe Forward described the gaming industry, giving us a wonderful insight to that industry.   I loved Tori and Noah together, and Forward also created some very good secondary characters; such as Emma, Jake, Quan, Sam. I expect to see more of them in the future books.  Off Her Game was a fast-paced, fun enjoyable story; wonderful couple, great secondary characters, as well as filled with excitement and suspense.  Great start to this new series, which I intend to continue reading.

Guest Post-White and Aqua

I tend to browse Pinterest (as many romance writers that I follow do) for hot men. I have a board dedicated to it. But I term it research. I have a hockey team in Off Her Game, and I needed inspiration. I tell you what… There’s a LOT of inspiration on Pinterest.

Casting that group of men was probably the most fun I’ve had in a long time. I wanted a group of guys that were as different and diverse from each other, but still managed to work together as a team. I started with Darren, and gave him his best friend Cody, blond white guy from Minnesota. But the rest of the team cast themselves. Gavin, the guy from the huge Italian family, son of Italian immigrants, and Misha, my Russian love. If he was real… *sigh*

I love them all. This is why I planned sequels, because these guys kinda took over and were all demandy about getting their story.
Anyway, I’m getting carried away. I wanted a cast of men that represented a wide variety of ethnicities.

I look at my favorite hockey team, the Dallas Stars. There are Canadians, Swedes… Among the Americans, there’s Hispanics and African-Americans on the team, and there’s a great diversity there that I don’t think every sport can manage.

Not saying they don’t, but it seems like hockey appeals to a wider mass of people. Sure, in America, football reigns. There’s no denying that. Especially in Texas. I see it every day.

I love hockey. I adore it. So, I suppose in my small way, this book is meant to show that love. I wanted people to know what it was about the sport that attracted me to it. But then those characters became alive, and now they’re my favorite part about the book.

OFF HER GAME
by Suzan Butler

Penalty Number One: Men
Making time for men and relationships doesn’t fit into Valerie Chase’s game plan. This crisis-counselor-turned-cocktail-waitress knows the score—Men are a distraction. But when a certain hockey player tempts her wild side, part of her wants to indulge in a little harmless fun.

Penalty Number Two: Desire
As the star center for the Texas Highlanders, Darren Moran’s good looks and deadly determination make him a fan favorite. But after the previous season’s disaster, the last thing he needs is to let some woman crawl under his skin. But… Valerie is different. She brings out the best in him—both on and off the ice—and he’s not about to lose her.

Penalty Number Three: Passion
When the game moves to the next level, Darren and Val have got to call timeout. An unplanned romance is a game-thrower, a sinful temptation that neither of them can afford. After all, there’s no way to have order in matters of the heart when the penalties tally up to an ejection from the game.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 25, 2013

Penalty Number One: Men

Making time for men and relationships doesn’t fit into former social worker Valerie Chase’s game plan. This crisis counselor turned cocktail waitress knows the score, though. Part of her would love to indulge in a little side action, especially when a certain hunky hockey player demands attention, but she’s far too responsible to let herself get wild and crazy.

Penalty Number Two: Desire

Darren Moran’s good lucks and deadly determination make him a fan favorite. He‘s always wanted to play hockey and does it well. After the last season’s disaster, the last thing he needs is to let some woman crawl under his skin and distract him. But… Valerie is different. She’s his good luck charm. She makes him play the best he’s ever played and he’s not about to lose her, even if it means incurring penalties by encroaching on Valerie’s personal life.

Penalty Number Three: Passion

When the two take the game to the next level, Val’s got to call a timeout. An unplanned romance is a game-thrower, a sinful temptation that neither of them can afford. After all, there’s no way to have order in matters of the heart when the penalties tally up to an ejection from the game

REVIEW: OFF HER GAME is the first storyline in Suzan Butler’s new Texas Highlanders Ice Hockey series focusing on the men who play professional hockey and the women they love. Suzan also includes a variety of secondary characters including team owners, bar managers, ex-wives and lovers as well as a multitude of family members, patrons and fans.

Off Her Game focuses on Valerie Chase, a part time waitress and full time counselor at a shelter for at-risk teens. But when she is suddenly laid off from her counseling job due to cut-backs, Val is at risk to lose everything when money becomes tight. And to complicate matters, she is attracted to professional hockey player Darren Moran, whose divorce just became final. Val isn’t in the mood to become Darren’s rebound relationship but she continues to send mixed signals even once their relationship passes friendship to lovers.

I did have one complaint in this particular storyline and that was the mixed signals Valerie continued to give-off. One moment she was hot and the next she was cold-all within a matter of minutes. She would refuse Darren’s advances then she would be upset when he refused to play the game. The reader is taken on a roller coaster ride of one character’s inability to acknowledge her true feelings and in doing so amped up my anxiety level. At one point I hoped Darren dumped her a** for good but Darren was a man in love and believed Val was his personal good luck charm both on and off the ice.

If you are a fan of hard-hitting sports heroes and beautiful heroines, Off Her Game is the perfect match. There is a potential for several more storylines especially for one bar owner in particular. Let’s hope everyone gets the HEA they deserve.
