Review:

X-Ops Exposed by Paige Tyler is the 8th book in her wonderful X-Ops series.  When we last left off in the last book, things were about to change for the X-Ops team, with a new management in charge.  Tanner Howland, our hero, likes living alone in the forest in Washington State.  Tanner is a hybrid Feline shifter, who has problems controlling his beast due to the drugs he had been given that made him a shifter.

Zarina Sokolov, our heroine, is a doctor who has treated Tanner, and other members of the team.  She has been trying to find a serum that will reverse the drugs that made the hybrids, and then mental instability.  Zarina has fallen in love with Tanner, and now with the serum, she follows him to the forest.

Tanner is not happy when he sees Zarina, though he also loves her, but he is worried that his beast will hurt her; and he is determined to send her packing.  Zarina refuses to leave, and tries to convince Tanner to allow her to give him the serum, which he refuses to take, especially since this new drug will make him forget about her.

There is another group of humans and hybrids living in the forest that Tanner will work with, especially when some of their group begins to disappear.  Tanner will join with that group to track and find out who is behind the kidnappings.  We get to meet some hybrids we had met previously, and other members of this group of people living in the forest who now have their lives in danger.

Despite his attempt to force Zarina to leave, Tanner knows she is needed to help doctor those injured. Slowly their romance heats up, and once they both allow their feelings show, they know there is no turning back.  But the question:  Will they survive?

There was also a second storyline that Tate (another X-Op member) was sent to determine if a series of murders in a small town were animal related (or were they hybrids gone wild?).  The Doctor behind drugging the hybrids was suspected of being part of these murders.  The deputy sheriff, Chase, was assigned to work with Tate during his investigation.  Chase is unaware of hybrids, and becomes a great partner for Tate.

When Tanner and the other hybrids are captured, Zarina will call Landon (acting chief of X-Ops) to get help.  What follows is an intense, fast paced, exciting and dangerous attempt to rescue the men.  It was great and fun to see all our former heroes, such as Landon, Ivy, Tate, Clayne Declan, Kendra, Danica, Diaz, and some newbies that I look forward to learning more about (Cam & Chase).  It will take the entire team to band together to save and fight this violent bad group, one who is a former friend of Tanner.  At this point, Tate (with Chase to help) will be sent to help the team save Tanner and the others.

When things get wild and crazy, lives are on the line and Zarina must act quickly to give the serum to any of the hybrids that are losing control.  Will Tanner be one of them, and forget about Zarina?

The last half of the book was very suspenseful, with a few twists, and a thrilling ride to the finish.  Paige Tyler, as always, gives us another terrific story, with another wonderful couple, and great secondary characters.    X-Ops Exposed is an exciting, fun, suspenseful, fast-paced, action filled and intense story that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end.  X-Ops is a great series, and you need to start from the beginning, in order to enjoy all the wonderful characters and the continuing story line.

Knowing she wasn’t going to get away, Zarina slid to a stop and spun around, ready to shout at the beast that wanted to kill her. She’d seen Tanner let out a roar that could paralyze almost anything crazy enough to attack him, so perhaps she could do the same thing.
But her cry of defiance died in her throat as she came face-to-face with a gigantic grizzly bear. The beast reared up on its hind legs, towering over her for one heart-stopping moment before dropping to all fours and roaring at her so loud, her bones felt turned to jelly.
She vaguely remembered the store clerk in town trying to sell her a can of bear repellent. If she wasn’t so terrified, she’d laugh at the idea. What the heck would a can of pepper spray do to something this big?
The bear took a step in her direction with another roar, showing off fangs large enough to bite right through her.
For a split second, Zarina considered running again, but it would be pointless. She’d never outrun a bear.
Rabbits get eaten.
So instead, she screamed as long and loud as she could.
The grizzly looked shocked for a moment, but instead of scaring the animal off like she’d hoped, all it did was seem to make him mad. Head low, the bear started toward her.
She was going to die.
But suddenly, the bear stopped, a look of what could only be confusion on its face as it focused on something behind her. A second later, a roar ripped through the night that shook the ground. She jerked her head around, almost collapsing in relief when she saw Tanner standing there in the dark, dressed in jeans and a T-shirt, his eyes glowing vivid red, fangs bared as he let out a roar that sounded exactly like that of a lion. Which made sense, because those were the DNA strands blended with his own.
Zarina stood transfixed. Tanner’s fangs were longer and looked more terrifying than the bear’s.
The rage and anger on his face must have been enough to scare the grizzly, because the huge animal gave one more halfhearted chuff in Tanner’s direction, then turned and scurried back into the pitch-dark forest.
To her right, she caught movement. Crap, Tanner was going after the bear. Not because he wanted to hurt the animal, but because by running, the grizzly had become the prey, and Tanner’s lion half simply couldn’t stop itself from hunting the animal down now that the rage had taken over.
“Tanner,” she said softly. “Let the bear go.”
He stopped like he’d hit a brick wall, then stood there, unmoving, for what felt like forever, facing away from her and staring off into the darkness in the direction the bear had run. Not that it was probably all that dark for Tanner. With his animal-enhanced eyesight, he could probably see the grizzly’s big, fuzzy rump bouncing off into the woods. And if his eyes lost the creature, then his keen sense of smell would fill in the details. Which was a good thing, since she’d have probably been a bear treat if it hadn’t been for that nose of his.
After what seemed like an eternity, Tanner turned and looked at her. His fangs and glowing red eyes were gone now, replaced by a mesmerizing blue gaze and a ruggedly handsome face that had made her heart almost stop beating the first time she’d seen it. He had a bit more dark-blond scruff along his jaw and chin now. Actually, a lot more. Maybe it was because she’d grown up in a cold-weather environment where the opposite sex went all caveman in an attempt to stay warm, but she wasn’t usually a fan of facial hair. On Tanner, though, it looked incredibly scrumptious.
His T-shirt clung tightly to his chest and shoulders, showing off all the muscles he had upstairs, while his jeans fought to contain thighs that looked poised to tear their way out at any moment. Had he actually gotten more muscular since he’d been out there?
Zarina almost ran to him right then so she could throw her arms around him and hold him tight for the rest of the night. But she didn’t, because she knew he wouldn’t be ready for that. Not after she’d showed up in the forest out of the blue and almost gotten eaten by a bear.
But damn, it was hard.
Tanner looked better now than when he’d been living in the dorms at the DCO complex. He had been put up there since the agency’s covert agents had found him out here all that time ago. Even the stress lines that had been etched into his features had completely faded. It almost made her sorry she’d come out here to disturb the serenity he seemed to have found. But she couldn’t stay away, not with the way she felt about him. And especially not when she could finally help him.
“What are you doing here, Zarina?” he asked bluntly.
So much for him sweeping her into his arms and saying he was happy to see her. Clearly, he wasn’t. She tried not to let that hurt too much.
“I’m here to help you,” she said, equally blunt.
She’d learned a long time ago that dancing around a subject wasn’t the way Tanner did things. It wasn’t the way she did, either, so that was okay. She didn’t bother mentioning that his disappearance had caused her more sleepless nights than she could count and had nearly driven her insane with worry. That would have been emotional blackmail, and she wasn’t going to do that to him.
His jaw flexed. “I don’t need any help. I’m doing a good job of controlling my hybrid impulses all on my own.”
She looked pointedly in the direction the grizzly had run. “It doesn’t seem like it to me.”
Tanner flinched, and she immediately regretted her choice of words. Dammit, she was out here to help him, not push him further away.
“I haven’t lost control in the two months I’ve been out here,” he said through clenched teeth. “Not until you decided to do something stupid like wander through the middle of a grizzly’s territory by yourself.”
Zarina wanted to point out that she hadn’t planned to be out here this late and that there was no way she could have known she was in a bear’s territory. But she bit her tongue and focused on trying to defuse the situation.
“I’m sorry I made you lose control again,” she said. “But I’m here to make sure it doesn’t happen again…ever.”
She waited, expecting Tanner to ask her what she meant by that, but he didn’t. Instead, he stood there regarding her and looking way better than any man should considering he’d been camping in the woods for two months. She had met plenty of guys who couldn’t pull off his level of masculine perfection after primping in front of a mirror for an hour. That was one of the other things she’d learned about Tanner. He didn’t have to work hard at being so amazing. It came naturally to him.
After another minute of silence, Zarina accepted that if they were going to talk, she was the one who would have to get the conversation started. “I finished the hybrid drug antiserum that will return your DNA back to what it was before Stutmeir’s doctors experimented on you. You can be a normal human again.”
She waited for some reaction—relief, doubt, elation. Something. But Tanner looked as interested as if she’d told him it might rain tomorrow.
“I’ll never be normal again,” he finally said quietly.
“Yes, you will.” She stepped closer, anguish coursing through her when he immediately took a step back. “I worked on the antidote every minute since you left. It will work. It will keep the beast from ever slipping out again.”
“I don’t want it, dammit!” he shouted, making her jump. He cursed and ran his hand through his hair. “I’m sorry,” he said, his voice softer. “For yelling at you. And for making you come all the way out here and hiking halfway across the Wenatchee Forest to find me. But I don’t want the antidote. Just go home, okay? Leave me out here where I can’t hurt anyone.”
Zarina’s heart tore in two at the pain in his eyes. She had no idea why he was turning down her offer, but she wasn’t leaving without him.
“I’m not going home,” she said, standing her ground and leveling her gaze at him.
Having this conversation would have been a lot easier without holding a flashlight. Then she could have folded her arms to emphasize her point.
“Then you’d better have a lot of books on that e-reader of yours, because you’re going to get bored damn fast waiting for me at whatever hotel you’re staying in.”
“I’m not going to a hotel,” she told him. “I’m staying out here.”
Red flared in his eyes but faded just as quickly. “Like hell you are.”
“I’m not leaving,” she said firmly. “You can run off into the woods—we both know I can’t keep up with you—but I still won’t leave. I’ll keep walking all over the forest looking for you.”
His eyes flickered red again, and he muttered something under his breath she couldn’t catch. “You irritate me like no one else on the planet, do you know that?”
“Yes,” she replied, even though it was a probably a rhetorical question. “So, which way to your camp?”

Review:

Her Dark Half by Paige Tyler is the 7th book in her wonderful X-Ops series.  When we last left off in the last book, our heroes throughout this series were all on the run. The man they trusted who ran DCO (Department of Covert Operations) was killed, and the two major villains were out to arrest and kill them all. It was a huge game changer.

In Her Dark Half, Trevor Maxwell, our hero, was still working with DCO, but he was acting undercover helping his former teammates in hiding.   The goal was to find evidence to prove that Thomas Thorne, who was now in charge, was behind all hybrids being created to build his own army.  Trevor is forced to accept a new partner, who was new to DCO.

The story starts off a few years prior, where we meet our heroine, Alina Bosch, who is  a CIA agent leading a mission that goes bad.  Alina lost her whole team because her partner betrayed them and had set up a trap.  Alina has spent this few years wanting revenge, but has not been able to find her ex partner.  Alina leaves her job with the CIA and accepts a job with DCO, having been tempted by DCO that they will help her find her ex partner.  Alina is told by Dick (one of the two villains) that she needs to spy on her new partner…Trevor. She finds it hard to trust anyone, but she sees something about Trevor that makes her suspect that there is more than she has been told.  Trevor, at first also doesn’t trust Alina, but pretty quickly they are in the middle of some attacks, and Alina begins to realize that Dick is using her information to kill those that they have interviewed.

Trevor and Alina will also become very attracted to each other, and in a short time a romance will begin.  Alina will realize that Trevor is a good guy, and also learn about him being a shifter; they will join hands to fight off hybrid attacks. What follows is an intense, fast paced, exciting and dangerous attempt to reveal the truth about Thomas Thorne and those now in charge at DCO.  It was great and fun to see all our former heroes, such as Landon, Ivy, Tanner, Declan, Kendra, Danica, Adam, Braden, Dreya, just to name a few.  It will take the entire team to band together to fight these ultra powerful hybrids, who are impossible to kill. Of course, one of those powerful hybrids, is the man Alina has been trying to find all these years.

The last half of the book was very suspenseful, with a few twists, and a thrilling ride to the finish.  Paige Tyler, as always, gives us another terrific story, with another wonderful couple. I do not know what she has in store of us next, but the game has changed and I can’t wait to see how this will affect our team.  Her Dark Half should not be read out of order; this is not a standalone.  You need to start from the beginning, in order to enjoy all the wonderful characters and the continuing story line.

excerpt

“What’s the plan here?” she asked Trevor quietly as the restaurant’s patrons eyed them curiously. “Because I don’t see anyone warming up to us enough to invite us into the back room.”
“We’re Trevor and Alina Hoffman, a filthy rich, newly married couple from Silicon Valley,” Trevor said, glancing around as if taking in the ambience. “We’ve been on an extended honeymoon for the past few months and are currently heading for a trans-Atlantic cruise out of New York City. We decided to do some gambling and got tired of dealing with all the crap at the local casino.”
“You think they’ll buy that?” she asked as he led her across the room toward the door with the guards.
“You sell the fact that we’re a newly married couple, and I’ll make them believe I’m a rich guy with a gambling addiction.”
She could do that. Then she realized one big flaw in their cover story. “If we’re a newly married couple, shouldn’t I be wearing a ring?”
Trevor gave her a sidelong glance. “What makes you think you aren’t?”
She looked down at her hand in confusion and almost fell off her stacked heels as she saw the monstrously large diamond he’d somehow slipped onto her ring finger when she wasn’t looking. Oh crud, it was huge! And as beautiful as any she’d ever seen.
“When did you put this on? More importantly, is this thing real?” she whispered.
Thank goodness she had his arm to keep her steady. She was feeling faint at the idea of wearing a diamond that was probably worth more than her entire apartment.
“I put it on you when we were married on the first of June in Monaco,” he whispered back. “And of course it’s real. I would never put something fake on the love of my life.”
“Trevor, I’m serious,” she said.
He made a face. “Okay. I slipped it on your finger when I was helping you out of the SUV. And yes, it’s real, so don’t lose it. I had to sign my life away to get it out of the DCO safes.”
She gulped. “How much is it worth?”
“Nothing compared to you, sweetheart,” he said in a romantic tone as they stopped in front of the two guards.
The bouncers working this door were a little bit more professional than the ones outside.
“Can I help you?” one of the men asked in a deep, rough voice that made Alina wonder if he chewed gravel for fun.
“Someone told me a man might be able to find a friendly game of poker somewhere near here,” Trevor said casually. “I don’t suppose you two might be able to point my wife and me in the right direction for a game like that?”
The two men regarded him suspiciously.
“I think you’re talking about the Horseshoe Casino,” Gravel said. “It’s nearby, very clean and friendly.” Trevor chuckled. “The Horseshoe is very friendly. But the place doesn’t have the quite the atmosphere we’re looking for. It’s a little too…what’s the word?… sanitized for our liking.”
Gravel studied Trevor for a moment, then glanced at the bar, giving someone there a nod. Ten seconds later, a slim man in an expensive suit appeared at their side.
“My name is Teddy,” he said in a cautious yet friendly tone. “What can I do for you?”
“I’m Trevor Hoffman. This is my wife, Alina. We’re getting ready to head out on a cruise in a few days and decided to do some gambling while we’re in town. Someone told us this place runs a clean game, so I thought I’d spend some money here.”
Teddy surveyed them with a practiced eye, taking in the cut of Trevor’s suit and her expensive gown, not to mention the big honking ring she wore. He must have liked what he saw, because he nodded.
“If I could get some identification and a credit card from you, Mr. Hoffman, I can quickly check your credentials and set you up with a line of credit.”
Alina tensed as Trevor handed over the requested ID and credit card. They could be in trouble. The fake ID and credit card by themselves would have taken quite a bit of time and money to pull off. Coming up with an Internet background to support that would take even longer.
“What are they going to find when they run your name and that credit card number?” she whispered as he slipped his arm around her and casually urged her away from the two men guarding the door.
“Relax.” He flashed her a grin. “They’ll find us with all the relevant financial and societal tidbits one would expect to see when looking at the rich and bored.”
She glanced at Teddy. He typed something into a computer just out of sight behind the bar. A moment later, he lifted his head and frowned in their direction.
“Something’s wrong,” she whispered.
Even the two guards were eyeing them funny now. She was starting to wish she had a weapon. If things went bad, they were in trouble.
“Alina,” Trevor said softly as he tightened his arm around her waist and tugged her closer. “Now’s the time for you to sell the newlywed thing.”
She opened her mouth to ask him exactly how he suggested she do that when he pulled her even closer.
She wished she could have said it was years of CIA training that took over and made her kiss him. But that wouldn’t have been true. Instead, it was a totally different kind of instinct. The kind that made a woman want to kiss a hot guy.

Review:

Her True Match by Paige Tyler is the 6th book in her wonderful X-Ops series.   I love this series by Tyler, as she gives us exciting, action packed stories, with wonderful couples. Her True Match was the best one yet, and the wild unexpected ending has us clamoring for the next book…NOW.

We met our heroes Dreya and Braden in Her Rogue Alpha. She was a thief that was suspected by the DCO to possibly be a shifter, since her abilities seem too good to be human.  Braden, a detective,  knows nothing of the DCO, but has become obsessed with following Dreya and catching her during one of her thefts.  When he successfully catches and arrests her, he is surprised and upset that a government agency has taken her away from the station.  His gut tells him to follow, and in doing so, he too eventually becomes part of the DCO team.  Dreya is offered to work for DCO, giving her the chance to learn how to use her abilities and help the team, especially in trying to bring down Thorne, the man who killed her friend.  Braden is also offered a job, as DCO feels his detective skills, and his ability to know how to find Dreya, makes them a perfect pair.  When he becomes Dreya’s partner the sparks ignite between them.

In the short time they are being trained to work together, they are sent on emergency missions that are pulse pounding, but their confidence in each other and the slow build romance creates a bond that will make them awesome together.  It was so much fun to see this sexy couple fall in love with each other, making themselves that much more of a cohesive team.

Ivy, Landon and Tanner are on assignment to find another lab creating hybrids, and when things begin to fall apart, creating danger, it is Dreya and Branden who will be sent to help them.   The mission is exciting and tense, but successful.  Just when things seem to be going their way, Braden makes a serious mistake that will throw all of our X-Ops heroes to run for their lives.   The ending was a thriller that will leave us holding our breaths at what just happened and praying that Tyler will write the next book fast.

I loved both Dreya and Braden together.  Loved Ivy, Landon and Tanner, who had big roles in this story line.  Her True Match was an edge of your seat suspenseful story that was non stop action throughout.  Paige Tyler once again gives us a terrific story that keeps us wondering where she will take us in what could be a game changing next book.

A Little Known Fact from Her True Match

Braden catches Dreya in the act. It would have normally been impossible for anyone to get the drop on her during one of her high-wire jobs, especially a cop. But her feline senses that usually let her know when there’s danger about, seem to be strangely muted when it comes to Braden Hayes. Would her inner kitty actually betray her if Braden was something it wanted? He does come with his own handcuffs after all.

excerpt

“How do you know I wasn’t testing the security system?” Dreya asked, her lips curving into a coy smile.

Braden sat across from the beautiful thief in one of the burglary section’s interrogation rooms, working hard to keep from smiling back at her. Even though he knew her record backward and forward, he was still having a hell of a time maintaining a professional detachment. He was good in the interrogation room, but Dreya was better. She charmed, she flirted, and she controlled where she wanted the conversation to go. Braden had already been forced to toss Mick out of the room. His partner had come damn close to asking their suspect out on a date, even though she was sitting at the table wearing a pair of handcuffs.Though Braden had to admit she made the cuffs look good. Even now, she was sitting at the table with her long, blond hair cascading around her shoulders, talking animatedly with her hands as if the heavy stainless steel cuffs were a fashion accessory. He wasn’t even sure when she’d gotten her hair out of the braid it had been in before, but he had the crazy urge to run his fingers through it. He resisted—barely. Dreya had been saying since they’d brought her in that this was all a big misunderstanding and that she could straighten this out if she could talk privately with the owner of the art piece they seemed to think she’d stolen. Like that was going to happen. Something told Braden that putting her in the same room with some rich playboy would be an incredibly bad idea. All she had to do was bat those hazel-green eyes at him a few times and tousle her hair with her fingers, and the guy would agree with anything she said. Hell, the guy would probably give her the silly blue balloon dog thing sitting on the table between them as a gift.

“If we’re going to talk about security systems, Dreya, let’s start with how you managed to climb the wall of that apartment on the south side of M Street. Because I gotta tell you, that was damn impressive.”

He expected her to deny it had been her—or beam with pride at the compliment—but her eyes widened in shock. For the first time that night, there was fear on her face.
“You saw that?” She darted a nervous glance at the one-way glass mirror to her left, the one Mick was standing behind.

He nodded. “Sure did. In fact, we have it all on video. The climb, the walk across the cable, the jump you made to the balcony.”

On the other side of the table, her face went pale. Shit, was she starting to hyperventilate?

“How many people have seen the video?” she demanded.

Braden frowned. Why the hell was a second-story thief worried about how many cops had seen her display her talents? That made no sense.

“Just my partner and me,” he assured her. “But while the video is amazing, it doesn’t explain how you were able to scale that wall. Were you using something on your hands to get a grip? I searched your bag but didn’t find anything.”

Dreya swallowed hard. In all of the previous occasions he’d questioned her, she’d been confident and posed, but suddenly it was like she’d been hit by lightning. She seemed off balance…lost.

“You can’t let anyone else see the video,” she said.

He shrugged. “That’s not really up to me.”

She stared at her cuffed wrists, her shoulders slumping in a defeat he hadn’t seen coming. “What if I confess?”

She said it so softly he wasn’t sure he’d heard her correctly. “What?”

Dreya lifted her head to look at him, that usual glimmer missing from her eyes now. “If I confess right now, will you destroy the video?”

Braden hoped to hell his mouth wasn’t hanging open. Being interrogated by the cops could make people say strange stuff, but Dreya had to know that even with the evidence they had on her, a woman with her background and clean record could likely get a case like this whittled down from the standard five to seven to less than two years. Why would she agree to a written confession? What the hell was on that video she was so terrified of letting anyone see?
He knew he needed to be careful, but right then it was hard to think of Dreya as the hardened criminal he’d always believed. He was smart enough to know she wasn’t a saint, but there was something going on here. She was so terrified she was on the verge of tears.

The sudden aura of vulnerability had his heart beating hard and fast. The urge to protect her from whatever was freaking her out was impossible to ignore. Part of the reason he’d become a cop was to help people in trouble, and Dreya definitely seemed to be in trouble.

Description:

HE’LL DO ANYTHING FOR HER
Former Special Forces Lieutenant Jayson Harmon can’t believe that his war scars don’t matter to beautiful feline shifter Layla Halliwell. Why would she saddle herself with a broken man?

But Layla knows that Jayson is a hero to the core, and that only she can heal his wounded soul. So when Jayson is deployed on another deadly mission, no way is Layla staying behind…

Review:

Her Rogue Alpha by Paige Tyler is the 5th book in her X-Ops series.  I am a fan of Paige Tyler and her wonderful exciting series (Swat & X-Ops).  In Her Rogue Alpha, we have been waiting for Layla and Jayson’s story.  For a brief refresher:  Layla has loved Jason for awhile, but Jason did not feel worthy of her love, as he is a former soldier, who was badly injured in combat.  In the beginning, we go back to the time when Jason lead his team in combat, and see how badly he was hurt protecting his team.  Back to the present, with the help of his friends and Layla, he gets a job working for DCO, but not as a field agent.   With Layla going on her first assignment as a field agent, Jayson worries about her.

Dick, one of the untrusted leaders of DCO offers Jayson a chance to be able to go back on the field, and to become Layla’s partner.  All he has to do is take the upgraded hybrid serum, which Dick says will fix his injuries, not to mention giving him some hybrid powers.   He accepts, despite knowing that both Layla and his friends tell him not to trust Dick, as it is a high risk that could kill him. He is then sent on a mission with a crooked agent to Russia to rescue a young son of a politician.

When Layla returns from her successful first mission, she learns about Jayson, and embarks secretly to Russia to help him.   What follows is an exciting adventure to rescue the young man, his friends and a girlfriend against insurmountable odds.  While on the mission, Jayson comes to terms with his love for Layla, and rises above his injuries to prove himself a capable warrior.  Only Layla knows the truth that the serum didn’t work, but Jayson is still doing things he did not think he was capable of

On a side story, Ivy and Landon are working to find a missing diamond stolen from Thorn, another villain of this story.   The key is the young woman who stole the diamond is a shifter, and they are determined to save her from Thorn’s attacks on all local thieves.  This is a story I expect to be continued in the next book.

The romance between Layla and Jayson was very well done, and sweet.  I loved watching them work together, and bond their relationship.  Together, they will be a team for the future, and protect each other from whatever shenanigans Dick will try to pull on them.  Saying too much more will be spoilers, but Her Rogue Alpha continues the trend of very exciting, intense and romantic stories. If you have not started this series, I suggest you do so.  You will not be disappointed in anything written by Paige Tyler.

This September, Paige Tyler releases Her Rogue Alpha, the fifth in her heart-pounding X-Ops series. To celebrate, we have a letter from the hero and heroine to share with you. We also have the first THREE chapters to read FOR FREE!

Download the first three chapters here.

Letter from Jayson Harmon, hero of HER ROGUE ALPHA

Hi everyone. I’m Jayson Harmon, and you’ll be seeing me in the next X-OPS book called HER ROGUE ALPHA. Paige asked me to tell you about my background and how I feel about my girlfriend, Layla Halliwell. I usually don’t like talking about personal stuff like this, but Paige threatened to go back into the book and give me a pink Mohawk and size six boots if I didn’t, so here goes.

I used to be in the Army Special Forces, but I got injured during a mission in Afghanistan and ended up taking a butt load of shrapnel in my back. The Army did their best to patch me up, but it didn’t help. I still got medically separated from the Army. I have to admit; I’m not dealing with that decision very well. The Army was going to be my life, and now that’s all gone. Worse, the guys on my SF A-team are still out there, fighting and risking their lives without me. That stings. Now I’m left figuring where my so-called life goes from here—if anywhere. I have a job running the weapon ranges at the Department of Covert Operations, but watching field agents train to go on missions I’ll never be able to is hard as hell. It wasn’t the life I pictured having, but I’m trying to make the best of it.

I also have an amazing girlfriend, though I can’t for the life of me figure out why she’s interested in broken man like me. Feline shifter Layla Halliwell is total perfection. She’s beautiful, talented, and has everything going for her. She’s even getting ready to go out on her first field mission as a DCO agent. Thinking about her being out there, in danger, without me there to watch her back is driving me crazy with worry.

Now the deputy director of the DCO wants me to take an experimental drug that will not only heal my injuries, but give me shifter abilities. Problem is, people who were given previous versions of that same serum either died or ended up like wild, uncontrollable animals. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was terrified to take the stuff, but at the same time, I’m afraid not to take it.

Is it crazy for someone like me—as screwed up as I am—to want to be whole enough to be able to be Layla’s partner in every way possible, including in the field on missions? I’d do anything for a chance like that.

Letter from Layla Halliwell, heroine of HER ROGUE ALPHA

Hi! It feels kind of strange to write an open letter to people I don’t know, disclosing personal—not to mention classified—information. But Paige is nodding at me, so I guess this is okay.

I went to college to become a psychologist because I’ve always wanted help people. After graduation, I got a job at the Department of Covert Operations so I could work with shifters like me. I didn’t take the job intending to ever become a field agent, but now that I’m in training to become on, I’m excited at the prospect. I’ll still help people and I won’t have to sit behind a desk to do it.

My boyfriend, Jayson Harmon, on the other hand, isn’t as thrilled about my career change. He’s exactly what I’m looking for in a man and I really care about him. He’s strong (physically and mentally), heroic, charming, romantic, and yeah, he’s attractive as hell, too! Problem is, he seems determined to push me away. I know he’s still dealing with injuries he sustained in Afghanistan and I want to help him get through this rough time in his life, but I have to admit, it’s wearing me down. I don’t know how much more I can handle. How can I help him when he refuses that help? This mission I’m about to head out on might be the last straw. I’m not sure if our relationship can handle something like that. And if that isn’t enough, the deputy director of the DCO is trying to talk Jayson into taking an experimental drug he claims will not only heal Jayson, but also give him shifter abilities. I’ve tried to talk him out of it, but I don’t think I was very successful. I’m scared he’s going to be something stupid and extreme while I’m away on this mission, and I won’t be there to stop him…

You can find out more about Layla and Jayson’s story in Paige Tyler’s latest release, Her Rogue Alpha. Download the first THREE chapters here!

Her Fierce Warrior
X-Ops series – Book #4
by Paige Tyler
Release Date: March 1, 2016

Her Fierce WarriorAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM / The Book Depository /

Description:
The woman tensed. As anger and fear ricocheted across her face, her eyes changed from red to green to brown in a dizzying display like nothing he’d ever seen.

Every instinct in Angelo’s body screamed at him to lunge for his weapon. Instead he set his feet for impact, blocking her slashing claws. Unbelievably, after a few moments of struggling, she went still, all the fight gone…

Minka isn’t sure she should trust the sexy Special Forces soldier who found her. Subjected to horrors, on the run from scientists set on locking her in a cage, Minka is terrified of the monster she’s becoming…and somehow, Angelo is the only one who can calm the beast inside her and make her feel safe.

But can she trust the way he makes her feel when she’s not even sure she can trust herself?

Review:

Her Fierce Warrior by Paige Tyler is the 4th book in her X-Ops series. Angelo Rios is our hero, whom we got to meet previously, being a good friend to Ivy and Landon. While in Southern Tajikistan during their covert operations, Angelo and his Special Forces team comes across a wild woman, who is running for her life. The team kills her attackers, and capture her, Angelo sees the signs he discovered when he helped rescue Ivy; the red eyes, the claws on her hands; he knew they found another shifter hybrid.

Minka, our heroine, is out of her mind with terror. She cannot control the beast inside her, and sees the men in front of her as enemies, until Angelo grabs hold of her and holds on. Minka slowly calms down, feeling safe with Angelo. But the minute he lets, the beast threatens to rise. Angelo has to leave his team, and head home to bring Minka to the DCO headquarters, since he is the only thing that will keep Minka calm.

When ivy meets Minka, she is shocked and without a word she walks away. Ivy and Landon have kept Ivy’s kidnapping a secret to the X-Ops leaders, and now Ivy knows that the blood that was taken from her is being used to create shifter hybrids, just like her. It will be the team that she trusts, Landon, Angelo, Layla, Tanner, John and others who will end up working with Minka to find the scientists who are horribly changing people into hybrids.

Saying too much more will be spoilers. But this was a very exciting, and romantic storyline. The slow build romance that will build between Minka and Angelo was wonderful, as well as steamy.   I really loved how Minka learned to keep her beast under control, and step up to take an active role in helping find the villains. The adventure back to Tajikistan with many of team, was intense, exciting, and pulse pounding action.

We learn a lot more about the DCO (Department of Covert Ops), as well as learning who the villains behind the making of hybrids. Paige Tyler does a fabulous job in giving us exciting thrilling stories in each book in this series, as well as wonderful couples. I loved Ivy and Landon, and now add Angelo and Minka to this great X-Ops team. Her Fierce Warrior was an edge of your seat story, with a bit of everything. If you have not read this series, I suggest you do so.

Paige Tyler’s latest X-Ops title, Her Fierce Warrior, came out yesterday! To celebrate the release, Paige Tyler stopped by to share with us a fun factoid about one of her X-Ops agents.

X-Ops Factoid: Danica Beckett (Her Lone Wolf) has a somewhat unusual connection with Clayne. Wolves mate for life, and apparently so do wolf shifters. The two of them can be twenty miles apart, and all Danica has to do is close her eyes and she can point toward Clayne wherever he is. They are always connected, even when they were stupid enough to be apart.

excerpt

“So what did you and Landon do this afternoon?” Minka asked, her soft voice dragging him back to the present.

Angelo looked up to see that Minka had already polished off two fajitas. Damn, the girl could eat.

“Landon gave me a tour of the DCO complex. I did some target shooting and blew up a few things. He even let me play with the expensive surveillance toys. I swear, it felt more like a recruiting pitch to get me to work there than anything.”

Minka’s eyes flashed green, her full lips curving slightly. Damn, why the hell had he said it like that? Now she probably thought he was going to come work for the DCO. Even if he wanted to, he couldn’t, not after just reenlisting for another five years. The army wasn’t the kind of job where you could walk into the boss’s office and say, “I quit.”

Thinking it would be a good idea to steer the conversation back to safer ground, he reached for another fajita and asked Minka a question instead.

“What do you think you’ll work on next with Ivy and Tanner? You going to practice with the claws for a while or move on to something else?”

Angelo felt a little crappy about changing the subject, but if Minka noticed, she didn’t seem to mind. And it wasn’t like he had to fake interest in what she was saying. Anything that involved Minka was important to him. Besides, he didn’t know much about shifters or hybrids, so the whole thing was pretty damn fascinating.

“What do you visualize when you see the beast in your mind?” he asked.

“Before today, I thought of it as a giant, blurry monster. But after learning that the beast is a cat, that’s how I picture it now.” She smiled. “Not a little house cat, of course. They aren’t scary enough. More like a big cat that roams the mountains.”

“Makes sense,” he said.

Minka set the other half of her fourth fajita on her plate and gave him a curious look. “Would you mind if I ask you a personal question?”

His mouth twitched as he prepared another fajita. He wasn’t used to Minka being so reserved. She usually said whatever was on her mind, regardless of whether it was personal or not.

“Go ahead,” he said.

“The first time we met, I had claws, fangs, glowing red eyes, and I tried to kill you. Since then, I’ve spent most of the time telling you about an imaginary creature that lives inside my head and makes me act like a monster. How are you so calm about that? Most people would have run away already.”

Angelo chuckled. Not exactly the personal question he’d expected, but then again Minka rarely did the expected.

“Well, my mom was full-blooded Cherokee, and I grew up around all kinds of Indian folktales and legends.
My dad was in the army, and whenever he was deployed, Mom would take my sisters and me back to the reservation where she grew up in Oklahoma. I’d stay up half the night listening to the old men tell stories about shape-shifters, animal spirits, skin-walkers, and trickster spirits.” He grinned. “I’m not saying I necessarily believed in all that stuff back then, but after meeting Ivy, Tanner, and the other shifters at the DCO, it just didn’t faze me that much.”

Minka looked at him with wide eyes. “You’re a real American Indian? Like in the movies? With horses and everything?”

He laughed again. The expression of wonder on her face was adorable. “First, I’m only half-Indian. My dad is Mexican, so there’s that. And second, Native Americans are almost nothing like you see in the movies. We don’t all live in tepees and ride horses. In fact, I don’t even own a horse.”

Minka was a little disappointed about the no-horse thing, but she was fascinated with what it was like growing up on an Indian reservation and being surrounded by all those legends. She immediately asked him to tell her some Indian stories. It had been a long time since he’d thought about them, but to make her happy, he dug through his head and tried to remember every tale he’d heard as a kid.

Department of Covert Operations Training Officer Kendra Carlsen has been begging her boss to let her go into the field for years. When he finally agrees to send her along on a training exercise in Costa Rica, she’s thrilled.

Bear-shifter Declan MacBride, on the other hand, is anything but pleased. He’s been crushing on Kendra since he started working at the DOC seven years ago. Spending two weeks in the same jungle with her is putting a serious strain on him.

When the team gets ambushed, Kendra and Declan are forced to depend on each other. But the bear-shifter soon discovers that fighting bloodthirsty enemies isn’t nearly as hard as fighting his attraction to the beautiful woman he’ll do anything to protect.

The steamy Costa Rican jungle brings out the bear in Declan MacBride when he and new operative Kendra Carlsen are ambushed. In the midst of relying on each other to survive, and fighting his explosive attraction to Kendra, this shifter is about to lose control…

 Review:

Her Wild Hero by Paige Tyler is the 3rd book in her X-Ops series. This is a great exciting series by Tyler, with a fabulous ensemble cast of characters that we get to see in each book. Her Wild Hero belongs to Kendra Carlsen and Declan MacBride.

Kendra, who is a trainer and researcher, finally gets her wish, being sent on a mission with one of the teams to Costa Rica. It’s supposed to be a fact finding mission, totally safe for her to get her feet wet. Declan has always had a thing for Kendra, but after not getting anywhere, he has given up. When the team is ambushed by hybrids; Tate and some of his team escape, with Kendra and Declan missing. Tate calls for help from the other X-Ops team, such as Landon and Ivy, and he expresses concern that John, the man who sent them on the mission is not to be trusted.

Declan, who is a bear shifter, does all he can to keep Kendra safe, as they fight off the dangerous and volatile hybrids. He devises ways to hide their scent, as they hide from them, hoping for rescue. With each passing day, Declan tries to fight off his attraction to Kendra, which has truly never gone away. Kendra finds herself becoming more and more attracted to Declan, and can’t understand why he ignores her flirting attempts. While they are hiding in a cave, recuperating from their lasted fight for survival, they both succumb to their lust for each other. Kendra learns the truth about Declan’s former fiancée, and why he was trying keep his distance from her. But now their romance has heated up, but the danger has also escalated with the hybrids on their trail, being far more advanced than originally thought.

While the team has trouble tracking them, they must also fight off the hybrids that keep coming. I do not want to give any spoilers. What follows is an exciting action-packed adventure that races to an exciting climax. Will the team find Declan and Kendra in time? Will Kendra erase Declan’s doubt that once she sees his bear shifter self, she will run away? Who is the betrayer that was behind the ambush?

Paige Tyler once again creates a wonderful, pulse pounding story, and another wonderful sexy couple. I also love how she brings so many of the characters from earlier stories to be a major part of each story. If you enjoy stories that have suspense, excitement, dangerous missions, and fantastic characters, not to mention the hot and sexy couples, then you need to read the X-Ops series. Her Wild Hero continues the trend of wonderful edge of your seat stories.

Her Secret Agent by Paige Tyler – a Review

Her Secret Agent by Paige Tyler – a Review

Her Secret AgentAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

Description:
John Loughlin, the Director of the Department of Covert Ops, is in New York City on a recruiting mission. He’s been tracking and evaluating one shifter in particular for some time. Cree Forest is a clever fox shifter—and very foxy. Cree is a translator for the UN and John is keen to recruit her brilliant mind and persuasive skills to join the DCO.

But Cree isn’t what she seems. Just as John has been watching her, Cree has been spying on him. She is working with a rogue shifter and John is getting too close—professionally and personally! On opposite sides professionally, can they trust each other with their hearts?

Review:
Her Secret Agent by Paige Tyler is a prequel novella to her X-Ops series. I am a fan of Tyler’s X-Ops series, and this prequel gives us an insight into the Director of the Department of Covert Ops, John Loughlin. It was a great read, and I loved the two leading characters.

John has been eying Cree Forest for some time, in order to recruit her into DCO. He arranges to meet her at a restaurant to offer her a job. After studying tapes of Cree, John sees things that lead him to believe she is more then she comes across, as he thinks she is a shifter. All the more reason for him to want her in DCO.

Cree is a beautiful woman, very confident and sure of herself. She turns out to be a great heroine. The chemistry between the both of them sizzles immediately when they meet. What John doesn’t know is that Cree has been following him also?

The story becomes very exciting from the moment they both walk out of the restaurant, as they come under attack. John learns quickly that he doesn’t have to protect Cree, as she is a strong force by herself. What follows is an exciting story that hooks you in from the first page, right through to the end. While they decide to work together to find out about the surprise attack, they both succumb to the combustible sexual energy between them. There are some twists, as we learn more about certain characters and DCO.

Her Secret Agent was a fast paced, action filled, and sexy as hell story. If you have read Paige Tyler’s X-Ops series, you will enjoy this short story. If you have not, it is time for you to start, with the first book, Her Perfect Mate.

But when Clayne finds out why Danica left in the first place, everything he’s tried to bury comes roaring back—and there’s no way this wolf shifter is going to take no for an answer this time

Review:

Her Lone Wolf by Paige Tyler is the 2nd book in her X-Ops series, which is romance suspense at its best. Paige Tyler writes an exciting suspense filled story, with a wonderful romance between a fabulous couple. Danica Beckett works for the FBI, and is one of their best agents. Two years before she had worked for DCO (Department of Covert Ops), but was blackmailed to leave.

Clayne Buchanan is our hero, and he was Danica lover two years before. She left without any real reason, and he has been heart broken and bitter. Clayne is a wolf shifter, and we learn early on, when he was recruited to join DCO, that he is volatile and needed to learn to control his temperament.

The story picks up with a serial killer on the loose, and Danica knows from her time with DCO, that the killer is a shifter. The FBI does not know the supernatural beings like shifters, and has no idea that DCO exists. Danica calls her old boss to tell him about the situation with already a few deaths. Unfortunately for Danica, the person sent to help under the guise of Homeland Security is Clayne. He is very cold to her, not happy to be on this assignment.

All this is early on, and I do not want to give spoilers. What follows is a tense and exciting adventure with the search for a killer that taunts them to play a game…..”catch me if you can, while I hunt my victims.”   The FBI ia having a hard time, but it is Clayne who uses his shifter abilities to come closer to the killer. However, the stakes are raised, as the killer knows Clayne too is a shifter.

While this adventure is ongoing, with continued violent deaths, we get to see Clayne and Danice become closer. In time she will tell him the truth, and everything changes. Their romance becomes sizzling, and the danger escalates to those close to the case, as the killer becomes vindictive. There is also a side story of our heroes from the first book in this series. It was great to see Landon and Ivy play a part in this story.

Paige Tyler has done a wonderful job giving us a fast pace & pulse-pounding non-stop action, a terrible villain, tense moments, great characters, and a fantastic romance. The gripping storyline comes to a satisfying conclusion, but many things still remain to be resolved within DCO. This is what romance suspense is all about, and you need to start reading this series.

Interview-RED

Paige, welcome to The Reading Café. We would like to thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.

Paige: Thanks so much for having me!

TRC: Please tell us about yourself:

Paige_Tyler_Paige:  I was born and raised in New Jersey, then moved all over after marrying my hubby (South Korea, Louisiana, Atlanta, Washington State), and currently call the beautiful Florida coast home. I’m a USA Today Bestselling Author of sexy, romantic fiction and I’ve written over fifty books in practically every genre of romance, but I have to admit that my favorite is definitely the paranormal/romantic-suspense combo. Hubby, my very own military hero, and I live with our adorable fur baby (also known as our dog) and spend a good portion of our time writing. While I graduated with a degree in education and was well on my way to being an elementary school teacher, I decided to pursue my passion and become an author instead. These days I’m fully committed to writing books about hunky alpha males and the kickbutt heroines who fall in love with them.

TRC:  When and how did you first become interested in writing?

Paige:  It seems like I’ve been writing since I was a little kid. I remember writing stories about all the kitties we had when I was nine or ten. They were cute little stories about them having adventures and playing with each other. No romance, though. I thought cats were girls back then, and dogs were boys, and everyone knows that dogs and cats don’t get along! 🙂

As I got older, I entered writing contests and took a lot of creative writing courses. I had some great teachers that really encouraged me to keep going—big shout out to Sharon Griffin, my creative writing teacher in high school. I feel so completely fortunate to have had those inspirational people around me at the right time. I certainly wouldn’t be where I am now without them.

TRC:  What challenges have you faced getting your novels published?

Paige:  I remembered when I first started writing back in the 1980’s…on a typewriter. I wrote stories, then spent hours in the local libraries getting the addresses for literacy agencies in New York. There were a lot who wanted you to attach a check with the manuscripts. As you can imagine I never heard back from any of them. I realize now that they were scam artists, but back then, I was crushed.

Once I got going with my digital career, and had a few books under my belt, I attended pitch appointments at various conferences trying to get in with New York. Those pitches scared me silly, and while a lot of them helped move my career forward, I still remember vividly the ones that ended within the first fifteen seconds, usually with the agent or editor saying, “I don’t like that idea. Do you have anything else?” That was hard to deal with, but I realize now it’s just part of the process.

Even with my current X-OPS series, which is doing great, it wasn’t exactly a walk in the park. I went through 174 agents before I found the one who believed in me and my story. But again, you realize after the fact that it was simply part of the process and it makes you really appreciate finding that perfect agent who really gets you. And I heart mine!

Her Perfect Mate

TRC:  Your X-Ops series began with Her Perfect Mate, which we reviewed earlier this year. For those of our members who may not be familiar with your series, can you please tell us the premise of the series, and how you came up with the idea?

Paige:  I’d love to!

HER PERFECT MATE revolves around the Department of Covert Operations (DCO), a top secret organization within the Department of Homeland Security. They pair the very best soldiers, law enforcement people, and spies together with shifters—humans who have special animal attributes in their DNA. Think of it like pairing one of them with one of us. They take on impossible missions few people in the world will ever know about.

The heroine is a sexy but deadly feline shifter named Ivy Halliwell who gets teamed up with yet another soldier—and she definitely isn’t thrilled about it. Both her previous partners hated her because she was a freak in their eyes, and she figures this new guy won’t be any different. But Captain Landon Donovan is Special Forces, so he’s used to taking crazy situations in stride. Not only are they amazing on the job, but they’re amazing in bed, too. There’s only one problem—getting romantically involved with your partner is against DCO policy. So, not only do they have to hide that they’re lovers, they also have to deal with people trying to kill them every few chapters.

HER PERFECT MATE is a paranormal shifter story that combines romance, action, suspense, and military elements into one exciting package that will keep you up reading late into the night—I promise.

My hubby and I came up with the idea at the Lori Foster Get Together in 2011. We were having dinner at PF Chang’s with our friend and one of my favorite writers, Monette Michaels, and her friend, Linnea Sinclair, talking about writing, especially how to make the jump from ebook/indie publishing to New York. Linnea said some really insightful things about finding a niche and a voice that is undeniably mine, then she pointed at hubby and suggested I should be using his military experiences to lend an edge to my books that other writers might not have.

Hubby’s always been reticent to take any of our books in the military direction…that’s an aspect of his life that he’s always considered personal and private. But after this long talk with Moni and Linnea, we both started thinking that maybe this was the way to go.

Around this same time, there was a lot of Special Operation stuff going on in the news, and an idea started developing. Wouldn’t it be cool to blend military elements with paranormal, specifically shifter, elements?

By the time we left Lori’s a few days later, I already had an outline going for the X-OPS Series. Hubby really got behind it, and our biggest problem became keeping the stories down to a manageable size. The first draft of HER PERFECT MATE was over 140,000 words!

Her Lone Wolf Nov 14TRC:  Her Lone Wolf is the second book in your X-Ops series, which was released yesterday. Can you please give a brief description of this story?

Paige:  Better yet…here’s the blurb! 🙂

Leaving him was Impossible…

It took everything she had for FBI Special Agent Danica Beckett to walk away from the man she loved. But if she wants to save his life, she has to keep her distance. Now, with a killer on the loose and the stakes higher than ever before, the Department of Covert Ops is forcing these former lovers into an uneasy alliance…whether they like it or not.

Seeing her again is even worse…

The last thing Clayne Buchanan wants is to be shackled to the woman who broke his heart. She gets under his skin in a way no one ever has and makes him want things he has no right to anymore. All he has to do is suffer through this case and he can be free of her for good. But when Clayne finds out why Danica left in the first place, everything he’s tried to bury comes roaring back-and there’s no way this wolf shifter is going to let her get away this time.

TRC:  How many books are planned for the X-Ops series?

Paige:  For everyone out there who absolutely loved HER PERFECT MATE, Book 1 in the X-OPS series, I have good news. The overarching storyline for the series has so much intrigue, distrust, and backstabbing going on, not to mention the myriad subplots and cast of secondary characters, that it has endless possibilities.

While each book has a main hero and heroine with their own standalone adventure and romance, I weave in a fun collection of secondary characters and plot arcs in to every story. Essentially, the characters continue to move the basic overarching storyline along in each book, much of it revolving around the fear that the people they work for at the DCO may be as evil and dangerous as the people they’re being sent after, all while enjoying their own romance and suspense-filled adventures.

Right now, I have the first ten books outlined, with basic conceptual material for at least another dozen or so. I think the readers are going to love having the X-OPS stories around for a long time to come!

Vampire 101TRC:  Modern Day Vampires is another series of yours. Can you give us a brief description of this series?

Paige:  This is fun vampire series I started quite a few years ago. While I love me some dark and brooding Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I didn’t want to go that route because it had already been done.

In Modern Day Vampires, my vampires aren’t demons. They’re vampirism is caused by a blood disorder which prevents their own blood from carrying oxygen properly. The vampire side effects (strength, speed, teeth, etc.) are all evolutionary changes that have come about over the centuries as their bodies came up with ways to help them be able to hunt for what they need to live—blood.

In the “old days” vamps would feed straight from the vein. Hence all the vampires getting a really bad reputation. But in this “modern” day and age, things have become quite a bit more civilized. There are blood banks and blood deliveries, and rule books on how to behave and conform. There’s a lot of humor as the vampires try to blend in. Think bureaucracies and paperwork, suntan lotion, and dedicated vampire 911 lines.

In the first book in the series, VAMPIE 101, the heroine, who grew up watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer has a hard time adjusting when she’s bitten by a rogue I’m-not-going-to-follow-your-rules vampire and left for dead. After rescuing her, the hero has to teach her everything she needs to know, while protecting her from the rogues who have decided they want things to go back to the good old days.

Here’s the blurb!

Being a Vampire Isn’t What It Used to Be.

Savanna Royce is a weekend Goth-girl who’s always been fascinated with vampires. She doesn’t really believe in them, of course, but that changes when she’s bitten by a rogue vamp and left for dead. Fortunately, two-hundred-and-seventy-eight-year-old vampire Kaige Travers is there to rescue her. Unwilling to let her die, he turns Savanna into a vampire to save her life—not knowing if she’ll thank him or hate him for it.

While Kaige is teaching Savanna what she needs to know about being a vampire, neither of them can deny the chemistry that’s there. Somewhere between getting her registered at the local vampire admin office and teaching her how to order blood on the internet, they fall for each other—fast and hard.

Just as things are heating up between the sheets—and everywhere else—they encounter one minor problem. The rogue vampire who attacked her is back and this time he wants to finish the job he started.

I’ve been working on Book 2 in the series for a long time, and I swear I’ll get it done—as soon as I figure out how to clone myself. 🙂

Animal AttractionTRC:  What can you tell us about your Alaskan Werewolf series?

Paige:  I also started this series years ago, though I’m happy to say that I just re-release Book 1 in the series—ANIMAL ATTRACTION—in the summer. I wrote this series for a particular publisher who had a wonderful “Men of Alaska” series going. I figured what better place to put werewolves than the great outdoors of Alaska. After getting the rights back from that publisher, I revised the story, adding more characters, storylines, and adventure.

I’m also working on a re-issue of the second book in the series—ANIMAL INSTINCT—and hope to have this book out by next summer (2015). If I get that cloning thing down. I’m also looking for a group of minions to hire (they must work for bananas), so I can find more time in the day for writing.

Here’s the blurb for ANIMAL ATTRACTION!

Not only are werewolves real, but they’re damn hunky, too.

Frustrated when none of the real newspapers will hire her as a reporter, Eliza Bradley takes the only job she can get–at a paranormal magazine. Her first assignment takes her to Fairbanks, Alaska to investigate the rumors that a werewolf has killed two local men.

When she meets Hunter McCall, a local college professor and an expert on wolves, she finds herself irresistibly drawn to him and ends up spending more time in his bed than worrying about werewolves. That’s when Eliza finds out Hunter isn’t just an animal in the sack, he’s an animal out of it, too–of the werewolf variety. Talk about a complicated relationship.

But Eliza can’t dwell on Hunter’s little shapeshifting issues for long. There’s another werewolf out there with a taste for human blood, and she and Hunter are the only ones who can stop him. If they don’t, they’re likely to become his next victims.

TRC:  You like to write a few genres, such as Paranormal, Romance, and Contemporary. What genre do you find is more challenging to write and do you have a favorite genre?

Paige: That’s a killer question! I love working in all subgenres of romance, be they paranormal, suspense, erotic, sci-fi, western, but right now, with my X-OPS and SWAT series going so well, my new favorite is romantic suspense genre. Of course, as anyone who has read HER PERFECT MATE (X-OPS 1) will tell you, even my romance suspense has a good dash of paranormal in there, as well as some serious heat. 🙂

As far as the most challenging genre to write, I think contemporary is the hardest. In general, if you’re talking pure contemporary, you aren’t going to have zombies jumping out of closets, the hero & heroine won’t be running for their lives from some deranged killer, they’ll be no threats to the city/country/world/current time-space continuum, etc. The writer has to move the romance and story along using those conflicts that keep everyday people from coming together—doubts, insecurities, social and economic differences, etc. I tend to love action, drama, and suspense (and monsters!), so it can be a bit challenging writing romances without those elements.

TRC:  What are you working on now?

Paige:  Right now, I’m just about going crazy with all the stuff I have going on (I really do need those minions)!

As you can see from this blog, I’m doing lot of promo for HER LONE WOLF (X-OPS 2), but I’m also getting ready to do the promo for a special free novella in the X-OPS Series called HER SECRET AGENT. It gives the readers a peak behind the scenes of the very beginnings of the DCO. You get to see a younger John Loughlin, the Director of the DCO, getting to know a certain “foxy” shifter extremely well. It will be available on the 2nd of December from Sourcebooks, but you can pre-order it now.

I’m also putting the finishing touches on Book 2 of my Special Wolf Alpha Team Series (SWAT…as in a pack of werewolves working on the Dallas SWAT team. Cool, right?). At the same time, I’m working on the first draft for Book 3 in that series, due to the publisher sometime in January. Plus, I’m starting to rough in the details on Book 4 of X-OPS. Or is it Book 4 of SWAT? I get a little confused sometimes.:)

Oh, yeah! BTW, I’m also putting out a military ménage boxed set for Veteran’s Day, with a tribute to each of the uniformed services. It’s your basic old fashioned girl meets two guys and decides that anything two can do…three can do better!

TRC:  What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing? Do you have any hobbies?

Paige:  Did you see my schedule in the previous question? LOL! When I’m not writing…I’m either in the shower, or I’m sleeping. Even then, I’m still working out plot points.

But seriously, when I can drag myself away from my laptop, I’m usually out exercising with hubby (We love to jog and do P90X yoga. Have to do something to unkink from all that time behind the computer!). Or we’re out taking our fur baby for walks. We try to get in a movie now and then, and we have a few TV shows that I will always find time for—Teen Wolf, Supernatural, and The Walking Dead.

TRC:  Can you please tell us your writing process? Do you have a favorite spot or specific time to write?

Paige:  My hubby is a key part of my writing process. We typically go to PF Chang’s to brainstorm a story outline over spicy chicken. When we get home, he’ll start the outline/rough draft while I’m working the second and third drafts of a previous story. I check what he’s doing every night. Have to keep him on point or he’ll add random zombies into the story just to see if I’m paying attention. By the time I’m emailing a polished draft to my editor, he’s tossing me the next rough draft. Sure, he’s not much for romantic dialogue (he’ll just throw in a line such as “The hero should probably say something romantic here.”) and his intimate scenes are usually synopsized down to a single line (“Insert mad monkey sex here.”), but the plot work he does really saves me a ton of time and helps me meet deadlines.

You already know that I write all the time, but as far as where I write, mostly it’s on the couch. I just curl up with the laptop and go to town.
