Description:
Siora has been on the run for longer than she cares to remember, from her past and her gift. Born with the ability to see and speak to ghosts, she has heard their desperate pleas as an otherworldly predator stalks the dead amid the fertile killing fields of the collapsing Krael Empire. The creature’s power and reach are growing with every soul it consumes, but Siora is preoccupied with her own troubles: namely an assassin who has sworn an oath of vengeance against her.

Gharek of Cabast was once the right-hand man of the reviled empress but is now a wanted fugitive. Although his reasons for hunting Siora are viscerally personal, what Gharek can’t anticipate is that when he finally does find her, she will hold the key to saving his world, or what’s left of it. To make good on old debts and protect the vulnerable dead from a malevolent force, Gharek and Siora will both need to make an ally out of an enemy—and trust that will be enough to save each other.

Review:

Raven Unveiled by Grace Draven is the 3rd book in her The Fallen Empire series. Raven Unveiled is a slow built romance, but the story takes center stage; filled with violence, betrayal, battles, and sacrifices. We met both of our leading characters in the previous book, with Gharek, the Empress’s cat-paw, determined to find Siora, who he feels betrayed him and his daughter. Gharek being the Empress’s cat-paw committed terrible atrocities against others, but now that the Empress is dead, he is free, keeping his disguise not to let others recognize him. His daughter, Estrad, was born with no arms, and is considered an abomination; and he makes sure she is protected, while he searches for Siora.

Siora, our heroine, is wonderful, as she is caring, compassionate and always looking out for others; but she knows Gharek is looking for her, and is constantly trying to be a step ahead. Siora is a shade-speaker, who sees and talks to the dead; she fears she has other powers, and tries to ignore them.

Along the way, they are both captured by a General, who is determined to take over the lands once ruled by the Empress. With the threat of death, as well as concerned about the protection of his daughter, Gharek agrees to find what the General needs to defeat the enemy.  Soira and Gharek have to work together to find the device, as well as stop an evil creature destroying the trapped souls.  Slowly, both Gharek and Soira begin to come to terms with the past, as he also tries to tell her that she has more powers, that is not evil, but good to help them. I really enjoyed seeing Gharek and Siora begin to care about each other, as well as his redemption and forgiveness.

What follows is a heartbreaking, emotional story, with so much action, danger, twists and turns along the way. Raven Unveiled an excellently written fantasy, that had a bit of everything from great heroes, romance, and exciting throughout.  Raven Unveiled was very well written by Grace Draven. If you enjoy fantasy, I suggest you read this book.

Gharek held a small lamp aloft to illuminate the path ahead. He didn’t worry that the fragile light might be seen in the distance and alert someone. His mount’s hooves crushing sticks and brittle deadfall would accomplish the task long before the light did.

The music of insects and bird calls had been loud just before he crossed the tree line, a cacophony of whistles, rustles, and chirps. Those sounds died away the closer he rode to the ruins of the dead city until the silence itself held its breath and only the gloom shrouding the trees breathed. His amiable mare stopped suddenly then pranced backward, tossing her head and snorting. Gharek tapped his heels against her sides to coax her forward. She’d have none of it, fighting the bit in her mouth as she pivoted on her hooves to trot back the way they’d come.

Gharek reined her to a halt, considering whether it was wise to continue his scouting in another direction or make camp nearby and wait until morning to resume his hunt. He’d lose time with camping but trying to find anyone in this darkness while riding a spooked horse was an exercise in futility. Besides, he could make up the time in daylight. Siora was on foot, he on horseback. He’d cover far more ground in less time than she would, and the chance she’d outrun him if he spotted her was nonexistent.

He guided the mare to retrace her steps, and this time she readily obeyed the command, eager to put distance between them and the city that squatted like a pustule on the landscape. But she’d taken no more than a pair of steps when something wrapped icy fingers around Gharek’s spine and wrenched him backward. He flew off the saddle as if lassoed from behind and landed on his back. The ground beneath him vibrated from the beat of his mare’s hooves as she bolted past him into the labyrinth of trees.

He lay there for a moment, stunned and winded. The ice shard wedged against his backbone remained, though whatever had ripped him from horseback didn’t press him into the dirt. A few more breaths and he lurched to his feet, unsettled by his unusual clumsiness, alarmed by the violence of an invisible force that had so thoroughly unhorsed him. There’d been no trip rope to clothesline him, nor had he been riding fast when he fell. The lamp he held had fallen when he did, lost somewhere in the underbrush when its flickering light had guttered. Darkness hung thick enough to scoop with a spoon.

His muttered curses sounded loud to his ears as he peered into the sepulchral black, hoping he might spot the mare standing nearby or at least find a partially cleared path that led back to open pasture. He took a step only to suffer a hard clamp on his backbone, as if the icicle there had suddenly transformed into a shackle locked around his middle. Invisible tethers seized his arms and legs and he was jerked to one side and then the other as if by a drunken puppeteer with their hands on the strings.

Gharek staggered, struggling to keep his feet, struggling to free himself from the bonds that held him in an unbreakable grip that both dragged and yanked him in the direction of Midrigar’s walls. He careened through the dark, along a jagged path that propelled him into tree trunks before spinning him away to tear through the underbrush. He tried planting his feet in the dirt to no avail, his boots carving skid marks as he was pulled along like a cur on a leash. His palms left bloody smears on the bark of those trees he tried to grip for purchase and was wrenched away with little effort.

The iciness slithering down his spine spread in creeper tendrils throughout his body, wrapping around his lungs and heart, his liver, even his tongue so that his curses and snarls slowly ebbed away and his struggles waned. Speaking was an impossibility, breathing a challenge, and he was reduced to nothing more than a grunting, shambling mute driven inexorably toward an ancient city of the damned and a fate he could not know but feared with every part of his soul.

Dragon Unleashed by Grace Draven – a Review

Dragon Unleashed by Grace Draven – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Magic is outlawed in the Krael Empire and punishable by death. Born with the gift of earth magic, the free trader Halani keeps her dangerous secret closely guarded. When her uncle buys a mysterious artifact, a piece of bone belonging to a long-dead draga, Halani knows it’s far more than what it seems.

Dragas haven’t been seen for more than a century, and most believe them extinct. They’re wrong. Dragas still walk among the denizens of the Empire, disguised as humans. Malachus is a draga living on borrowed time. The magic that has protected him will soon turn on him–unless he finds a key part of his heritage. He has tracked it to a group of free traders, among them a grave-robbing earth witch who fascinates him as much as she frustrates him with her many secrets.

Unbeknownst to both, the Empire’s twisted empress searches for a draga of her own, to capture and kill as a trophy. As Malachus the hunter becomes the hunted, Halani must risk herself and all she loves to save him from the Empire’s machinations and his own lethal birthright.

Review:

Dragon Unleashed by Grace Draven is the second book in her Fallen Empire series.  In Dragon Unleashed, the heroes of this story are different than the first book, though in the same world; though we did meet our heroine, Halani, in the first book.  Halani is a healer, as well as having earth magic, which she needs to keep secret, as magic is forbidden.  Halani lives in a trading camp, with her mother, uncle and others she has been with for many years.

Malachus, our hero, is a draga, desperate to find a mother bone that will allow him to shift to his dragon; if he cannot find the bone, he will die.  Malachus has been hunting for this bone for a long time, and when he arrives by the trading camp, he senses the artifact is close.  He has a vision of Halani and when he sees her by the caravan, he also meets her mother, befriending and charming both of them.  But later that evening, he is attacked by those who have stolen the bone, and it is Halini who will come to his rescue and nurse him back to health.

Malachus stays in their camp while he recuperates, and in a short time, both Halini and Malachus feel a strong attraction to each other.   They both try to just to be friends, as there is no future, since he will leave as soon as he is better.   Malachus feelings continue to grow, but he discovers the group steals from graves to help make ends meet, and at first, he is very angry, knowing that Halani kept this secret.   But before he could leave, word comes that Asil, Halani’s mother has been kidnapped, and together Malachus and Halani will head to Krael, where the evil Empress Dalvila resides.  It is here that Malachus will come close to his mother bone; will he survive the evil Empress?

The first 1/3 or so of the book was a bit slow, but it picked up and the last 2/3 was a wild, action-packed, exciting adventure.  Malachus was a great hero, not only strong, tough, but very tender with Halani, and made friends with the other men in the camp.  I loved Halani, as she made a great heroine, being a healer, and her earth magic made her great.  I really loved them both together.   Will Malachus leave or find a way to stay with Halani?

I loved how when things were bleak, and the Empress was set on destroying both of them, Halani utilized her powers to try and save Malachus; she really was amazing.  Malachus was also a great hero, as he suffered horrible cruelty as a captive of the Empire. Dragon  Unleashed was an  excellently written fantasy that  had  a bit of everything from wonderful heroes, romance, danger, cruelty, great characters and an exciting adventure all the way through; especially the last 1/3 of the book; not to mention the delightful end.  If you enjoy fantasy, I suggest you start with Dragon Unleashed.

BARB’s Reviews:

Seasons of Sorcery Anthology are novellas written by Jennifer Estep, Amanda Bouchet, Jeffe Kennedy and Grace Draven.   I looked forward to reading this anthology, as some of my favorite authors have stories that I must always read.   I will write a short review of each arc to give you my thoughts on each book.

Winter’s Web by Jennifer Estep
This is a novella that takes place in Estep’s wonderful world of her Elemental Assassin series. Anything even short, is a must read for me, because we get more time to spend with Gin Blanco, our spider assassin heroine.

In Winter’s Web, Gin and the gang (Owen, Bria, Finn, Sophie) all attend in costume the renaissance faire.  Gin isn’t thrilled to be in costume, but she is determined to have fun. Of course, anywhere Gin goes there is bound to be problems.  At the faire, she watches a woman that marvels the crowd with her sword expertise, and before the day is out, Gin is face to face with a dangerous enemy, who is out to kill someone she loves.  We have come to know that Gin will go through hell and back to save those she loves.  This was an exciting, action- packed short story that I savored from start to finish.  I will not tell too much more, as it would be spoilers.  If you are an Elemental Assassin fan, you need to read this and enjoy the fun.

A Curse for Spring by Amanda Bouchet
I looked forward to reading this short story, since I had read and loved Bouchet’s last series. Prince Daric is desperate to save his land, the Kingdom of Leathen.  They have been in a catastrophic drought for many years, and now they face losing their land to another kingdom.  Rain, our heroine, has lived with Daric and his family for many years, since they pulled her out of a magic weather mist; she was a goddess of Spring, and is now human. With the threat of having to merge Leathen with the enemy kingdom, as well as marry the enemy’s Queen’s daughter, Daric desperately needs to find a way to break the water curse, and save his family.  He and Rain, who have come to fall in love with each other over the years, go on a journey that will change their lives and destiny.  I loved Rain and Daric together, and this was a heartwarming quick fun story, that had moments of sadness.

The Dragons of Summer by Jeffe Kennedy
This story revolves around our hero, Harlan, who is the consort of the High Queen, Ursula. With war on the horizon, Harlan, who is also head of security, is extra cautious protecting his Queen.  We learn quickly that Harlan and Ursula are lovers, but she also knows he is keeping secrets of his past, that threaten their relationship.  When members of the Queen’s team arrive to help plan on stopping the attack, Harlan loses his cool with some of the members of his family and must decide to reveal to Ursula his secrets of his past or lose her for good. What follows is a wonderful story where Harlan’s family betrayed him and his sister years before, and when he explains the terrible truth about his sister, Ursula is fully by his side.   As the group put differences aside, Harlan will come to terms with his brother and together they will all prepare to fight for survival in this war.  It is a wonderful story of family, love, loyalty, betrayal, with excellent characters, sexy romance and dragons.

A Wilderness of Glass by Grace Draven
Brida Gazi, our heroine, is a flute player with elements of magic.  When Brida plays her flute with others from her town at a Lord’s party, a stranger accosts her.  The stranger wants to know where she got the flute, which was created by her brother, using a bone found by the ocean.   When she walks during the evening by the ocean she comes across two strange species badly injured.  Brida will try to save them, and use her flute to communicate with sea creatures. What follows is a sweet and impelling story of Brida learning the secrets of the sea and her flute, and changing her life along the way with an unlikely romance, and the danger when evil rears its ugly head.  This was a different and well written story.

For the last five years, one small village’s tithe has been the same woman. Gilene’s sacrifice protects all the other young women of her village, and her secret to staying alive lies with the magic only she possesses.

But this year is different.

Azarion, the Empire’s most famous gladiator, has somehow seen through her illusion–and is set on blackmailing Gilene into using her abilities to help him escape his life of slavery. And unknown to Gilene, he also wants to reclaim the birthright of his clan.

To protect her family and village, she will risk everything to return to the Empire–and burn once more

Review:

Phoenix Unbound by Grace Draven is the 1st book in her new Fallen Empire series.  This is my first book by Draven, and I really enjoyed this  well written fantasy themed ‘enemies to lovers’ romance.  Phoenix Unbound is a slow built romance, but that is strictly in the background as the story takes center stage; filled with violence, betrayal, battles, and sacrifices.

Gilene, our heroine, lives in a small village which is part of the Empire.  Every year, all the villages have to send a woman to the capitol as a sacrifice to the Gods, as part of the Rites of Spring. For 5 years Gilene, who is a secret fire witch, saves the women in her village, by representing one of the women each year who are burned alive.  She has the ability to not burn from the fire, and also is able to create an illusion changing her looks.  She survives each year, suffering scars along the way.  Her village does not treat Gilene with appreciation, expecting her to do her duty, despite the danger and terrible toll it takes on her.

Azarion, our hero, is a gladiator, who was sold to the empire by his cousin, and is also the best gladiator.  But he must endure the cruelty as a slave, especially to the Empress who uses and abuses him sexually.  He desperately wants to escape and return home to his family, and reclaim the crown of his clan, which was stolen by his evil cousin.   The last few years, Azarion has been able to see through the disguise of this young lady who is able to return, and comes up with a plan to escape.

Azarion will force Gilene to help him escape, using her ability to use illusions to change how she looks.  He threatens to reveal her town’s trickery to the Empire, if she doesn’t help, but he does promise to let her go and keep her secret if she works with him.  When Gilene once again walks away from the burning fire, and helped Azarion escape, she runs to return home, only to have Azarion kidnap her.  He needs her to help him return home, and win back his rightful title.  What follows is an exciting, dark & action packed adventure filled with danger and violent situations.  When Azarion finally gets home safe, there is still the danger of his cousin, and proving to the fire witches that Gilene is indeed one of them.

In the beginning, Gilene hates and does not trust Azarion, but over time, especially after the dangerous and harrowing adventure travelling to his home, and when she meets and gets to know his family, her feelings begin to change.  Azarion, despite his growing feelings for Gilene, plans to honor his word to help her return home.  Will Gilene go home to a town that used her, or will she stay with those she has come to care for, and Azarion?

I thought that Gilene was a great heroine, strong, brave, loyal and her powers were great; something she will learn to increase in time.  When the war escalates, it was amazing how awesome she was.  Azarion turned into a wonderful hero, who suffered horrible cruelty as a captive of the Empire.  When he began to fall in love with Gilene, it was wonderful to see how sweet he was to her; this was a beautiful enemies to lovers story. Everything does change for the better when Azarion rises up to his true destiny, and must find a way to save his people and fight the Empire.

Phoenix Unbound was  an  excellently written fantasy that kept your attention throughout, with a bit of everything from wonderful heroes, romance, danger, cruelty, great characters and an exciting adventure all the way through.  If you enjoy fantasy, I suggest you start with Phoenix Unbound.

Grace Draven’s DRACONUS:

Leida is dragged before a dragon tribunal for high treason where the punishment is death.

Throwing herself at the dragon’s mercy, Leida is horrified to learn her fate: a bespelled silver collar set with gems and four years of servitude to her former lord. The revenge is everything the earth dragon could wish except for one thing – his beautiful mistress refuses to divulge the reason for her deception. Leida of the Glimmer South has a carefully guarded secret that can either reunite her with Magnus, or tear them apart forever…

~Draconus was previously published by the now-defunct Amber Quill Press.~

DRACONUS by Grace Draven

NOTE: Draconus was originally released as a stand alone in 2005

REVIEW: DRACONUS by Grace Draven is an adult, paranormal/fantasy romance story line focusing on dragon lord Magnus Silverclaw, and his former human mistress and servant Leida of the Glimmer South, who disappeared four years earlier. Finding the ‘dragon’ whom she loved in a passionate entanglement with another woman, Leida took what wasn’t hers to take, and headed to places unknown. Four years later, captured and now a prisoner of the dragon she loved, Leida would beg mercy for her life but in doing so must reveal a secret that would change the dynamics of her relationship with the dragon she loved.

Magnus is an alpha male; a dragon lord revered by all he commands but loved by the only woman who has escaped his hold. Leida has loved her dragon lord from the very start but jealousy, envy and a lack of communication force Leida to run to save her heart.

DRACONUS is a quick read; a story of betrayal, misunderstanding and heartbreak; secrets and revelations. Grace Draven pulls the reader into a story of romance and forgiveness. There is limited world and character development-I was hoping for a little more information about the missing years for both of our story line characters. The premise is entertaining; the romance seductive and passionate.

Dana Marton’s DRAGON LORD:

Draknart is the scourge of the countryside, a dragon well accustomed to defeating and devouring all the knights and sacrificial maidens sent his way. But when another maiden turns up at his cave, he finds that she’s not the easy meal he expected. Einin of Downwood is fierce and unafraid… and she’s armed for battle. Intrigued, Draknart realizes that not only does his intended victim arouse more than just his appetite, her arrival is could be fortuitous in more ways than one.

Flood, famine and war has ravaged the village of Downwood, and the local priest blames Draknart’s evil influence. Hoping to lift the curse on her village, Einin seeks out the dragon with the aim of being a slayer rather than a sacrifice. What she doesn’t know is that Draknart is a dragon under a fairy queen’s curse himself, doomed to transform to a man from midnight until dawn. To her surprise, Draknart offers her a bargain, one that might help her village – but at a high cost. With few options and even fewer resources at her command, Einin has no choice but to make a deal with a dragon.

••••••••••

REVIEW: DRAGON LORD by Dana Marton is an adult, paranormal/fantasy romance story line focusing on dragon Draknart, and human female Einen of Downwood.

Einen is an anomaly in her village; a strong, independent young woman who would become Downwood’s most recent virgin sacrifice to the giant dragon who lived under the mountain. To his own shock and dismay Draknart would discover that he was quite attracted to the scrappy, little human, a surprise that comes at a cost for both man and beast. Cursed to live a dual life as both man and beast, Draknart prepares to make a sacrifice of his own. What ensues is the building friendship and relationship between Draknart and Einen, as they prepare for what lies ahead.

Dana Marton reveals the backstory and history for both of our leading characters-from Einen’s struggles to survive to the events leading up to Draknart’s curse by the gods. The premise is engaging and entertaining; the romance is passionate and captivating; the characters are colorful, charismatic and sassy.
