ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 1, 2020

The accidental president is no accident.
The investigation that was FBI Agent Imogen Trager’s undoing may be the key to stopping a brutal, false flag terrorist attack meant to tighten a puppet president’s grip on power.

Imogen Trager is haunted—and sidelined—by a case she couldn’t solve. When the president dies in office, she knows that the conspiracy she chased down a blind alley still has life in it—and she needs to get back in the hunt.

As bodies pile up and leads go cold, the main target from that old case reaches out to her. He’s still at large, and now he needs protection. Imogen doesn’t trust him, and it’s not only because he’s offering intel that sounds too good to be true. He’s already tried to kill her once.

Emergency Powers feels ripped-from-the-headlines: a fractious FBI, an undermined Attorney General, powerful people exploiting the rule of law for their own gain, and using all manner of treachery to maintain their hold on power. But it’s more than headlines about things people think they know. And darker.

Set variously in DC, Seattle and small-town America, Emergency Powers is a story of corruption and redemption, achieved at enormous personal cost.

REVIEW:EMERGENCY POWERS is the third instalment in James McCrone’s contemporary, adult IMOGEN TRAGER political, suspense thriller series focusing on FBI Agent Imogen ‘Gen’ Trager and the investigation into the electoral process of the United States of America. EMERGENCY POWERS can be read as a stand alone but for back story, history and cohesion I recommend reading the series in order.

SOME BACKGROUND: Following the fictional 2016 US Presidential election wherein Diane Redmond is elected the first female president of the United States with an Electoral College difference of only four votes 271- 267, a series of anomalies including the ‘accidental’ deaths of seven electors sends up red flags that cannot be ignored, catching the attention of some powerful people including FBI Agent Imogen Trager, who begins an investigation of her own into the who, how and why.

Told from numerous third person perspectives EMERGENCY POWERS follows in the aftermath of the suspicious ‘death’ of American President Diane Redmond, and the quick turnaround of the people in charge. Something is wrong in Washington DC, and FBI Agent Imogen Trager, along with her team of agents and investigators, begin to piece together a conspiracy that implicates some of the most powerful men in and out of US politics.

From corruption and betrayal, secrets and lies, murder for hire, bio-terrorism and a puppet government EMERGENCY POWERS is a thought provoking story of what if-what if the all of the political power was controlled by the powerful elite, and with that control came the unquestionable influence over everyone in charge? When the legitimate power is controlled by the coercive power, everything and everyone is forced to follow the lead.

James McCrone pulls the reader into another thrilling and suspense filled roller coaster of political intrigue where the fine line between fiction and reality is blurred by the similarities of today’s current headlines.

Isolation and Conflict – by James McCrone

I’ve been thinking about isolation recently. Can’t imagine why.

And I was struck by a theme in my thrillers, one I hadn’t necessarily intended, but which is there nevertheless. That of isolation.

In my thrillers, the asymmetry of information—and the danger of sharing what you know—is the core of the tension, and suspense. Fear isolates the characters. They think they know why things are happening, but they struggle to find out how, and who is doing it.

The idea leapt out at me while I was writing the screenplays for Faithless Elector and Dark Network. A good friend who has worked as a screenwriter agreed to look at the first part of an early draft (he’d read the books) and give feedback. After noting that my screenplay, ironically, was perhaps being too faithful to a novel called Faithless, he pointed out that there was too much that was interior. Thought processes that work on the page to ratchet up tension and advance the plot don’t work on screen.

He suggested adding in a friend—maybe someone the character confides in? Or someone with whom he has playful banter, or a friendly antagonism? My friend’s broad suggestion was very helpful for the scenes I showed him, for which I’m very grateful. But I found it difficult to apply his advice more broadly. The characters’ isolation was the key, and I needed to portray that isolation while conveying information

I’m still working on the screenplays, not least because as an exercise (which is probably all the scripts will ever be) it forces me to look and think differently about what and how I write. It’s helped me become a better writer. Because as I (re)examined those works it became clear that each of the characters’ isolation, their solitude, was the point. Where do they turn? Whom can they trust?

As I began writing Emergency Powers, the book which debuts today, I wanted to use that sense of isolation—more consciously, and in a slightly different way. Recently, much has been said and written about the “us-versus-them” mindset in policing, itself a form of self-inflicted isolation. I wanted to turn that inside out.

FBI Agent Imogen Trager, and her friend Special Agent Amanda Vega can’t trust their own colleagues. For them, it’s not the Bureau v. the world, but factions within the Bureau that can’t be trusted. And for Imogen and Amanda the stakes are life and death. I wanted to explore, through Imogen, what kind of bravery it takes to stand outside, against the crowd.

The award winning writer Art Taylor, the author, most recently of The Boy Detective & The Summer of ’74 noted that Emergency Powers paints “keen portraits of true patriotism, and the courage that drives it.” My three strong female characters aren’t just standing in opposition to the conspirators, they’re having to do so while watching their backs even within the Bureau. It’s intricate work, like trying to glean clues from a bomb after it’s exploded—and it may be that one of their colleagues set the bomb in the first place. There’s worse to come, too.

The grey eminence in the story, known only as “the Postman,” does not suffer from the same kind of low information as Imogen and Amanda. But even before they know the name of the head conspirator, they begin to figure out how to isolate him.

Perhaps into a jail cell.

Now what?

Everything has changed, and not for the better. The not-so-perfect life I had as VP is gone, along with the team that’s been by my side each step of my political journey. Every move I make, every breath and thought, now affects millions, and the weight wears me down without Trey as a welcomed distraction.

They tell me war is coming, and I’m the one who has to stop it. But how is the question no one can answer. Past enemies lurk in the shadows while new ones hide in plain sight, stalking, watching, and waiting for the right moment to take me out. I need Trey back. I need them all by my side and ready to fight for me.

Can I undo the mess that my predecessor left in his wake, or will I break under the burden to save the world?

No pressure, right?

REVIEW: POWER SURGE is the fourth instalment in Kennedy L Mitchell’s contemporary, adult POWER PLAY romantic, political suspense series focusing on attorney/ now US president Randi Sawyer, and Secret Service agent Trey Benson. POWER SURGE should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the events and cliff hanger of book three POWER SWITCH.

NOTE: If you have not read the previous instalments, there may be some spoilers in my review.

SOME BACKGROUND: A few years earlier Randi Sawyer became the vice-presidential running mate to Kyle Birmingham, a man whose dirty politics run deadly and deep but in doing so Randi has angered a very powerful man who is determined to destroy our story line heroine. Now in the position as the US President, Randi continues to find herself the target of some very powerful people.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Randi and Trey) POWER SURGE picks up immediately after the events of book three wherein the abduction of the president’s daughter has left Trey Benson struggling with a direction in life. No longer on the president’s protection team, Trey battles between head and heart until Randi takes a stand demanding Trey and Tank return to her side. As Randi struggles to navigate the office of the US president, a potential war looms on the horizon, a war that could potentially spell doom for the USA. What ensues is the rebuilding relationship between Trey and Randi, as Trey’s need to protect Randi is jeopardized by our heroine’s need to ‘go it alone’, a need that places Randi in constant danger from both outside and inside her protective circle.

POWER SURGE is a story of betrayal and vengeance, secrets and lies, power and control. The premise is intriguing and captivating; the characters are energetic and colorful; the romance struggles in the face of duty, perception and vulnerability. As per my previous reviews, I have to question the number attempts on our heroine’s life, attempts that reflect badly on her security and the man that she loves, as well as our heroine’s refusal to take the advise of her protection team.

At least I have Trey, even if our scorching-hot affair can only happen in secret. Until the best part of my new life makes his own deal with a devil, I’m forced to make a choice. I can’t have it all in this power game they’ve woven, and watching me flounder is just part of their sick fun. Or can I play the game, change the rules, and have everything in the end?

Too bad for me, luck has never been on my side. It’s sink or swim here in DC, and I’m the idiot wearing cement shoes to the party.

REVIEW: POWER TWIST is the second instalment in Kenned L. Mitchell’s contemporary, adult POWER PLAY romantic, political suspense series. This is the continuing story of attorney/vice president Randi Sawyer, and thirty-eight year old, Secret Service agent Trey Benson. POWER TWIST should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the events of book one POWER PLAY.

Some background: Months earlier Randi Sawyer became the vice-presidential running mate to Kyle Birmingham, a man whose dirty politics run deadly and deep but in doing so Randi has angered a very powerful man who is determined to destroy our story line heroine.

Told from three first person perspectives (Randi, Trey, Kyle) POWER TWIST follows in the wake of the US presidential election where small town attorney Randi Sawyer holds the second highest seat in the US government. As the new vice-president, Randi finds herself at odds with the current president’s beliefs and power, and as such Randi is targeted in more ways than one. With a controversial bill about to be passed, Randi is caught between Russian interference, the political and powerful elite, and the man with whom Randi has fallen in love but not all is well in Trey Benson’s life, as our hero has sold his soul to the devil to protect the woman that calls to his heart.

POWER TWIST is a story of secrets and lies, power and control; corruption, deception, and betrayal. The political elite and powerful oligarchs control everything and everyone at all levels of government-money talks, threats of death and attempted political assassinations are frequent, and yet, no one questions the numerous attempts on our heroine’s life-you will have to suspend reality throughout the story. The fast paced, premise is intriguing and engaging; the characters are colorful, energetic, powerful and strong; the romance is passionate but struggles in the face of secrets and threats to our heroine’s life. POWER TWIST ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 18, 2019

Forget anything you know about history in the last 400 years. England’s Glorious Revolution failed. A descendant of the Stewarts, King James the Fifth occupies the British throne in 2006 and the British Empire is the dominant world power. The British Empire monopoly on nuclear weapons is challenged by the theft of five atom bombs. Imperial Secret Service Chief, Sir Anthony Raja, summons Mick Doyle to recover the missing weapons, suspected to be hidden in a German run gold mine in British New Guinea. Doyle is warned at the beginning of the mission that ‘everything in New Guinea will be trying to kill him.’ It seems as if New Guinea is trying to make good on that promise.

The recovery of the nuclear weapons is the toughest mission Doyle has ever undertaken. From the start, the mission is dogged by bad-luck and an ingenious enemy, always one-step ahead. His team must survive hostile New Guinea warriors, man-eating sharks and crocodiles, venomous snakes and a Chinese military force allied to the Germans.

•••••••••

REVIEW: PAX BRITANNICA is the first instalment in Paul Dalzell’s GOLDEN ANVIL adult, slightly dystopian, fictionalized story of alternate history that follows UK’s Imperial Secret Service (ISS) agent Mick Doyle as he is tasked with recovering five missing nuclear explosives believed to be hidden, in a German run gold mine, in British New Guinea. Along with fellow ISS agents Alexandra McCall, and May Pilgrim, Mick Doyle goes under cover in an attempt to locate the bombs, and take down the people in charge.

NOTE: Due to the graphic nature of the story line content, there may be some triggers for more sensitive readers.

The year is 2006, and the British Empire is the world’s dominant power. Having lost three wars to the United Kingdom, Germany, along with China, gain a foothold in the arm’s race as they prepare to ransom their stolen ‘wares’ to the highest bidder. From the outset, our hero has been targeted by the enemy, an enemy that is determined to take down ISS agent Mick Doyle, at all costs. Not only does Mick have to defend himself against potential assassins but the wilds of British New Guinea continues to make an example of our story line hero.

PAX BRITANNICA is an intricately detailed story of what if. An action packed, fast paced look at politics, espionage, vengeance and authority. The British Empire’s ISS agency is desperate to recover the missing nuclear weapons, weapons with enough power to wipe out most countries. The political content is vast, varied and comprehensive; the numerous characters are colorful, energetic and ambitious; there is a building romance and relationship between Mick Doyle and Alexandra McCall.

As to the meaning of ‘Pax Britannica’, it translates to British Peace: a state of relative international peace between the Great Powers regarded as overseen by the UK, originally observed during the nineteenth century.

THE FRIENDS OF EDDY RELISH
by Paul Dalzell & Gerard Radley
Genre: contemporary, adult, political suspense

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo / Google Play

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 16, 2019

Failed Hollywood actor Eddy Relish falls into the hands of bible-quoting gangster, Bill Blake, and must become a drug mule. Eddy is menaced not only by Bill Blake but also by Abdul Madbul, an Albanian superspy turned Islamist terrorist. A chance encounter in Paris makes Eddy the only person who can identify this terrorist. Cynthia Tzin, whose Hollywood bar is a front for Chinese intelligence, rescues Eddy. She offers Eddy a Faustian pact: become a Chinese intelligence asset, and she will protect Eddy and help rebuild his Hollywood career. Eddy’s first assignment is simple—become a star again and bait a trap set to catch Madbul. The trap is set at a Las Vegas party hosted by a Chinese billionaire. Madbul and Bill both appear at the party to collect their dues from Eddy. Cynthia’s abilities are put to the test to ensure Eddy emerges alive and unscathed from this ordeal.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE FRIENDS OF EDDY RELISH co-authored by Paul Dalzell and Gerard Radley is a contemporary, adult, political suspense story focusing on former Hollywood star Eddy Relish, whose life is no longer his own. A washed up actor who found himself in the seedy underbelly of sex, drugs and alcohol addiction, Eddy will unwittingly become a pawn in the world of high stakes espionage, intelligence and international terrorism. Hoping to reinvigorate his career, Eddy unknowingly becomes the bait to take down an Islamist terrorist, a terrorist who has targeted Eddy for termination. A deal with the devil pushes Eddy into dangerous circumstances, danger of which he knew little about.

Told from several third person perspectives, THE FRIENDS OF EDDY RELISH is a slow building story line that follows several intersecting and diverging paths that culminates in Las Vegas where all of the significant people, and events that have played a part in Eddy’s journey will be pushed together in an explosive reveal. From a bible spewing loan shark, to Islamist terrorists and Chinese intelligence, Eddy’s life spirals out of control but a spiral Eddy is blissfully unaware. At times I questioned what appeared to be the unnecessary introduction of yet another character, circumstance or situation but eventually everything and everyone fell into place in orderly fashion. The premise is intriguing and fascinating; the characters are colorful, diverse and eclectic.
