There’s something about prosecuting attorney Elle McCoy that Deputy Gabe Dawson just can’t get enough of. Even with Gabe’s family legacy in law enforcement and promising career, Elle’s smart, sassy rejection of all his charm makes Gabe want her even more.

But Gabe’s confidence is shaken when he’s shot on the steps of the courthouse, protecting Elle from a terrorist intent on revenge. Worse, Elle isn’t out of danger yet. But as they race to counter the terrorist’s next move, Gabe determines to prove to Elle—and himself—that he’s a man worthy of her.

Review:

Safe from Harm by Kate Serine is the 2nd book in her exciting Protect and Serve series.  I enjoyed the first book by Serine, and Safe from Harm is even better.  Gabe Dawson is our hero, and a sexy hunk who is known to be a love and leave them type.  Gabe comes from a law enforcement family, with members of the police force or the FBI.

Elle McCoy is a prosecuting attorney, who has had a deep crush on Gabe when they were teenagers.  But Gabe felt Elle was too good for a bad boy like him, and pushed her off to his best friend.  Now that that they are both grown up, Elle hates Gabe, and he keeps trying to win her over not understanding why she hates him so.  One morning at the coffee shop, sitting with his best friend, he runs outside to get something and hears shots.  His friend is dead, and Gabe blames himself for not being there.  It will be Elle, who secretly does care about Gabe, to help snap him out of his drunken depression. The sparks fly, but Elle makes sure nothing happens.   After the murderer is found and convicted, there is another attempt on both Elle and Gabe’s lives, with the suspect shot dead.

The villain in this story is the matriarch of a local family that hates law enforcement, and lives by his own rules, including forcing his family members to help him kill members of the Dawson family, including friends, as well as the prosecuting attorney, Elle.   This was one of the worst villains I have read.  What follows is an intense exciting story that will constantly bring our heroes in grave danger, with no evidence to prove who is behind the attempts, even if they know who.  What makes him even worse was what he made his children do, or he would hurt or kill them too.  This story had me a nervous wreck in some parts; as I began to read faster to see what happens.

The romance between Gabe and Elle was a slow build, with them bonding in need to help each other against a vile enemy.  Gabe will work hard to convince Elle that he is not the womanizer she thinks he is, and he does indeed care about her.  I did love them together, and their chemistry was scorching hot, as they gave into their true feelings.

This was an exciting, tense, action filled story, with an evil villain.  It was also a nice sexy romance, with a great couple that kept us rooting hard for them to make it together.  Kate Serine does a fabulous job of writing this story that had us tense and desperate to find out what happens at the end.

Review:

Stop at Nothing by Kate Serine is the first book in her Protect & Serve series. When I decided to read this book, I wasn’t sure what to expect, as Serine is a new author for me, but the premise of the series sounded very good. I was pleasantly surprised how much I did enjoy this book, and Serine’s writing was very good.

Stop at Nothing introduces us to our hero, Kyle Dawson. Kyle is an FBI agent, and we learn early that his coworkers are not too fond of him. He comes across with an attitude, and wants to do things his way. This is the reason he has lost partners often, and now after a case he was on failed, Kyle is reassigned to close to his home. Kyle isn’t thrilled with going back home, where he dreads to see his father, whom he doesn’t get along with, as well as the woman he loved and lost.

Abby Morrow is a deputy sheriff in town, who also happens to work for Sheriff Dawson. Abby has been working secretly to investigate an organization that is involved with human trafficking, which takes a dangerous turn when she discovers how close to home her investigation takes her. Her sister, and brother-in law are missing, and Abby doesn’t really know who to trust. Just when she completes her investigation, a threat against her life, as well as her sister’s comes out of the blue.

When Abby calls for help, it is Kyle who had just come home that will respond to her cry. What follows is a very exciting suspenseful adventure to discover who is behind the human trafficking business, and who is trying to kill Abby. It was also a nice reunion for Kyle and his brothers, and especially seeing Abby again. The romance between Abby and Kyle rekindles, and their chemistry was sizzling. I loved the two of them together, and enjoyed how they worked together to solve this case, and help find her sister. Will Abby tell Kyle the truth why she broke up with him 3 years earlier? Will Kyle become less antagonistic with his peers, including his father?

I thought Kate Serine wrote an excellent story that kept my attention throughout, and gave us a great romance. I loved the secondary characters she created, and look forward to future books that hopefully will involve those we met. I also strangely liked the earlier villain, who ended up saving both Abby and Kyle. This was an excellent start to this new series. If you enjoy a nice romance, and an exciting suspenseful mystery, then I suggest you read Stop at Nothing.

excerpt

This November Kate SeRine releases the first in her riveting new romantic suspense series, Stop at Nothing. To celebrate, the hero of Stop at Nothing, FBI Agent Kyle Dawson, has agreed to answer a quick Q&A for us!

If you could change jobs, where would you work?

I dunno… I doubt I could go back to the Sheriff’s Department. Just too much water under that bridge. Maybe DEA or Homeland Security? It’d have to be something else in law enforcement. I’ve never wanted to do anything else.

Sweetheart.

Abby suppressed a shudder as that one word speared straight through the heart. When Kyle Dawson had suddenly appeared in the doorway of her sister’s living room, she’d thought she was hallucinating. But there he was, coming to her when she most desperately longed for him, his black brows drawn together in a frown, the already angular planes of his face even harsher in his distress.

Kyle ducked down a little so he was at eye level with her, those intense sapphire blue eyes showing the depth of his concern as he searched her gaze. “Abby?”

“I interrupted the intruder,” she explained, her gaze flitting briefly toward the Sheriff, who’d looked skeptical from the start and was giving her the stink-eye even now. She cleared her throat a couple of times, before adding, “We scuffled. He got away.”

Kyle nodded, his eyes narrowed. “Was that before or after he cut the power to the house and managed to get by the alarm system?”

She should’ve known Kyle would see through her story. He seemed to have almost a sixth sense when it came to crime scenes. But the photo of Emma bound and gagged suddenly came to mind, her concern for Emma’s safety preventing Abby from confiding in Kyle.

“Clearly, he’d done his homework and had been casing the place, watching for an opportunity to break in when the family was out of town,” she said.

That at least wasn’t a lie. The guy had been prepared. He’d known exactly what he was doing. And she’d hazard a guess that he’d also known Curtis was out of town and that Abby and Tyler were there alone.

Speaking of Curtis… Where the hell was he anyway?

Kyle gave her a knowing look. “Abby—”

“I’m sure Mac and the boys can handle it,” she interrupted, inwardly cringing, knowing that the reference to his father was a low blow. But it had the desired effect.

“You heard the young lady,” Sheriff Dawson interjected. “Gentlemen”—he motioned to Gabe and Tom—“please escort Agent Dawson from the premises.”

Gabe took a step forward to obey his father’s order, but Tom put a restraining hand on his arm and shook his head.

“You look like you could use a little air,” Kyle said, gently but firmly taking hold of Abby’s elbow and leading her toward the doorway. She glanced over her shoulder at Tyler, reluctant to leave him after what they’d been through, but she saw Joe sitting beside him, chatting quietly to put the boy at ease.

Still, as great as it was to see Kyle, she wasn’t exactly eager to be alone with him again. Silence had a way of opening the door to some really uncomfortable questions that she wasn’t exactly ready to answer. That didn’t even include the total bullshit she was feeding everyone about what had really happened.

“Excuse me, Agent, but I have some additional questions for my deputy,” Mac said, his tone even in spite of the anger that flashed in his eyes. “And I would thank you not to interfere with my investigation, young man.”

Kyle lifted his free arm to his side and bent slightly at the waist, offering his father a mocking bow. “Wouldn’t dream of interfering, Sheriff.”

Before his father could offer another word, Kyle ushered Abby from the room and out the front door. Abby’s heart began to race as he led her farther into the growing darkness beyond the headlights and flashing blue-and-reds on the various vehicles.

Once they were out of earshot of any of the other officers, Kyle finally released her and turned to face her, hands on his hips. “Spill it. And don’t give me any bullshit about interrupting a robbery. I could hear some of what was going on. I know he was after something you have—or he thinks you have.”

Abby turned her head away, staring into the darkness crowding in along the dense tree line that bordered the property. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I told you what happened.”

Kyle grasped her chin and forced her gaze back to his. “Abby, it’s me. You could always talk to me. Let me help you.”
