REVIEW:DUCHESS OF DEBITS is the third instalment in Victoria Jayne’s contemporary, adult DIXIE MAFIA erotic, crime world romance series. This is fifty-eight year old, Irish syndicate leader Niall Doherty, and thirty two year old accountant Amy Kirk’s story line. DUCHESS OF DEBITS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
Told from dual omniscient third person perspectives (Niall and Amy) DUCHESS OF DEBITS follows in the wake of the abduction of our story line heroine. Having witnessed the attempted murder of her cousin Eddie, Amy finds herself the unwanted captive of the Irish Syndicate. Held hostage as Niall Doherty struggles in the face of what to do, Amy offers up an idea, an idea that could benefit the Dixie Mafia, and the Irish Syndicate but all does not go according to plan when the Bratva get involved, and her family demand retribution for the shooting of her cousin.
The world building is fast and furious as Amy finds herself a prisoner of the man with whom she will fall in love. Niall is battling between head and heart, tired of the fighting and the war between crime world factions, and in this, our hero is willing to sacrifice for the woman with whom he is falling in love.
The relationship between Amy and Niall begins as captive and jailer but an accidental jailer in the wake of Amy witnessing a crime. Niall is struggling with his attraction to a woman twenty-five years younger, a woman who is willing to make a deal to save all of their lives. The $ex scenes are intimate and provocative without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
The secondary and supporting characters include both Amy and Niall’s extended families We are introduced to Niall’s sons Aidan and Eoin; Niall’s cousin James, as well as Amy’s father Michael, and her cousins Paul and Eddie, and brother Mikey and Sam.
DUCHESS OF DEBITS is a story of power and control, family and relationships, acceptance and love. The fast paced premise is character driven, entertaining and dramatic but the buildup is perplexing, and I felt there was too much information missing ; the age-gap romance is limited but subtle, yet the developing relationship is somewhat thorny- Niall’s hot and cold was disconcerting; the characters are desperate and determined.
