Review:

A Game of Lies by Clare Mackintosh is the 2nd book in her DC Morgan series.  The story revolves around a reality tv show, Exposure, with 7 contestants who have to spend two weeks in the Welsh mountains in Wales. The contestants each have a secret (A Game of Lies), that they hide, as they soon realize that they need to win, in order for their secrets not to be exposed; with possible danger of their futures.  The tv show has garnered a lot of attention, especially on social media.  The following morning, the police are notified that one of the contestants is missing.  This brings DC Ffion Morgan and DC Georgina(George) Kent to the set to investigate.

The contestants are each different, as we meet them. Ceri Jones, Pam Butler, Aliyah Brown, Jason Shenton, Henry Moore, Lucas Taylor, and Ryan Francis (now missing). Ffion and George interview the contestants, as well as the production staff, in trying to find the missing person.

Ffion is stuck taking care of her rescue dog, Dave (just adopted him), who despite his weird behavior (needy, stays close to Ffion, farts), but he is dedicated to Ffion and always finds a way to find her; which will come in handy later in the book. George has just been transferred to the team, and she is somewhat introverted, as well as a work-acholic. She was very good, and impressive in helping to handle the case. I really liked her, and happy that she will team with Ffion.  Leo, who was in the first book, returns and joins the team as the lead investigator, which doesn’t really sit well with Ffion; the chemistry from the previous book is still apparent.

As Ffion, George and Leo are still trying to find Ryan, the missing contestant from the first night, things change drastically when someone is murdered.  The investigation now turns into a murder case, with the death of the producer.  Because Ffion keeps things to herself at times, without telling her cohorts, she finds herself taken off the case.  But Ffion remembers something about the murdered victim which will lead her to finding the real killer, and putting herself in danger.  Dave to the rescue. lol

A Game of Lies was a complex, entertaining and suspenseful story, that was a slow process early on, but as we get to the last half of the book, it does pick up. I really did not enjoy how the contestants were forced to sit in a small room, as secrets are revealed, such as creepy phobias, spiders, snakes, as well as bigamy, affairs, illegal activity.

A Game of Lies was very well written by Clare Mackintosh. I have enjoyed her previous standalone thrillers, but this series was good, but not as good as the other thrillers. I do suggest you read this series, as I would like to see what Mackintosh has in store for DC Morgan.

A wedding dress is meant to be worn only once.
When a stranger finds herself in need of a miracle at the last minute, I do the unthinkable: I offer mine to her.
The same one I wore down the aisle for my late husband.
Now I’m invited to the wedding and finding myself wondering why I shut myself away from the world for so long.
I’m only meant to be at the Wilder Retreat for a single day except I go home with not only a job offer, but the promise of something more.
Ridge Wilder is hiding secrets of his own. And the undeniable chemistry between us burns before we even contemplate taking that first step.
Only I’ve already had my happy ever after. I never planned on finding another.
And Ridge is even far more broken than I am—with a past that might come back to haunt us both.

•••••

REVIEW:Moments For You is the next installment in the Wilder Brothers series by the ever radiant Carrie Ann Ryan. MFY is the seventh book in the series, and as always, I recommend reading a series in order to get the most out of it, but if you so choose the book can be read as a standalone.

Oh the feels with this one!

Aurora is a widow, one stuck in a limbo of her own making. On the anniversary day of her lost husband, she is mindlessly scrolling Insta, and sees a post from a desperate bride in need of a wedding gown. Aurora takes this as her long awaited sign that it is finally time to move on with her life and start living again. So she allows the new bride to wear her dress, this singular act brings more into her life than she could ever know. It brings her Ridge Wilder.

Ridge and his brothers are cousins of the original Wilder brothers, and so they bought the land across from their retreat to start their own business. Little does the rest of the family know the heartbreaking pain that Ridge is in. -No spoilers- He thinks he hides it so well behind his gruff exterior and surly attitude, but when he meets Aurora he finds himself drawn to her by their familiar pain. Between the two Wilder businesses, most know of Aurora’s loss, and give her the space she wants, but when she donates her dress, they start to think that maybe she is ready to move past it and start living again.

Ridge and Aurora’s story was so emotionally moving. I loved how they supported each other through everything, it was so moving how they bonded over their pain, but even more so that that is how they really start to get to know one another. As the story progresses, the characters evolve more and more, but Aurora is truly my favorite. She starts living again, really living and doing things that she loves again. Overall, I am pleased with the book and can’t wait to see what the other Wilder Brother-Cousin have coming for them.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 19, 2024

If you’re looking for Eli’s happy ever after, you’re in the right place!

Lyra’s life hasn’t been all sunshine and roses, she knows what it means to be alone after losing her parents at a young age. Witnessing the devastation her mother experienced after losing her bonded Alphas made one thing clear to Lyra. Scent matching isn’t for her.

No archaic rules or a fluke of biology is going to tell her who to love. Not now and not ever. Friendship, compatibility, and hard work are the best way to find people to spend your life with. But all of it means nothing when her pack meets their scent matched Omega. Suddenly Lyra wasn’t wanted. Thrown out of their lives and completely alone, Lyra is forced to start over—again.

When a job offer in a city where no one knows her name seems too perfect to be true, Lyra jumps on it. Really, who would turn down the chance to be an executive assistant at one of the most powerful companies in the country. Getting away from the pack who broke her heart was just an added bonus.

But her first encounter with the person she’d been hired to work for doesn’t go as planned. Her new boss… is one of her Alpha scent matches. This brings Lyra face to face with the past she’s been running from her entire life. The more she lets them in, the more Lyra realizes she might be wrong—wrong about everything.

Maybe scent matches aren’t just a fluke. Maybe they’re the only thing that matters.

•••••••••

REVIEW:I haven’t read the first two books in this series, and I don’t think I missed much, (they are about a different set of characters, but Eli is in books one and two) but at some point I’m going back to read them.

Mental health issues can sometimes be glossed over or dramatised. In this book we get it done right.

Lyra really doesn’t know what to do next! Her pack doesn’t want her, she can’t go back to her parents (sadly they died when she was young!) and watching her mother lose the will to live (she lost her mates) so when offered a job in a different town, Lyra takes it.

Let’s meet the rest of the characters….

Eli (Alpha) bonded to Lyra and now looking at a new pack to bond with…. He owns the company Lyra started to work for. And apparently he was in the last two books (definitely a reason to go look)

Tanner (Alpha) bonded to Fawn and Zachary (been with Zak a few years before adding more to the pack)

Fawn (Omega) bonded to Tanner/Pascal and Zachary, he’s Scent matched with Eli and now Lyra…

Zachary (Alpha) is the teddy bear of the family.

Pascal (Alpha) and oldest in the already established pack, bonded but doesn’t have a physical relationship with any of the members (until Lyra)

I loved how they all interacted with one another, and all the nicknames that are given (Sweet Pickle King is a favourite, I did chuckle when first given to the character

Being with a scent matched omega is a gift as far as an Alpha is concerned, but to be given two omegas and a new pack is more than most Alphas dream about. There is a period of adjustment for everyone, and miscommunication almost ends the bonding before it even begins!
Taking it slow and steady as to not trigger Lyra (she has PTSD from her traumatic childhood experience) they are all so patient with her. And they all know about traumatic pasts, each alpha and omega have been through their own experiences (stripper/changing careers through injury, to name but a few)

Wasn’t expecting the cliffhanger…. Maybe if I’d read book one and two I might have been prepared 😆(they aren’t tied to this book) and now I have to wait patiently to find out what happens next.

I really like this author and the books she writes. there is a lot going on in this book, it touches on quite a few topics (so check the trigger warnings) A highly recommended read if you love your Omegaverse books.

“Oh, Kitten, believe me. If you don’t kiss me, there will definitely be a fight.”
I hold back a laugh, but my whole body is tingling from the scent of him. From the pressure of his body against mine. I slide my arms around his neck and rise up to claim his mouth. It’s both soft and hard, and the moment his fingers twine in my hair and his tongue finds mine, that tingle turns into a torrent. A wild wave of need so intense that I really, really wish that it was bedtime or nap time or any sort of away time for the kiddo.
But no. His mom won’t be back for hours, and that means I have to wait to get what I want. Ryan knows it, too, and when he gently pushes back, a wave of desperation crashes over me, and I have to fight the urge to draw him close, strip him bare, and scar the kid for life.
As if he knows what I’m thinking—and considering this is Ryan, he probably does—he chuckles softly. I feel the low rumble in his chest more than I hear it. Our eyes meet for a moment, then he eases behind me and rests his hands on my shoulders, the brush of his thumbs on the back of my neck sending shivers up my spine.
His breath tickles my ear as he leans close, and I freeze when he whispers, “I want one, Kitten. Not today. Not next week. But one of these days you need to stop being scared.”
I stay frozen, expecting him to walk on. To say something else. To do anything but what he’s doing, which is standing behind me, his palm now resting lightly on my shoulder.
It’s like a reverse staring contest, but it’s one I’m determined to win.
And as David stands up, then plops down on his bottom, then laughs his little head off before doing it all over again, Ryan bends over and kisses my head. Then he walks away from me, crossing the room to grab David and swing him up into the air, sending the little demon into peals of joyous laughter.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 23, 2024

You can’t marry him if you’re already married to me.

That was how Silas Cruz proposed to me—more like demanded, really. He didn’t exactly give me a choice.

He’s dark, jealous and incredibly possessive.

And he’s just one of the villains in my story.

I used to think he was my hero.

Still, there’s one thing I know for sure. Whenever I need him, whenever I’m in danger, he comes for me. He’s proven that time and time again.

Now, the game has changed, the stakes life and death.

But loving Silas may be the most dangerous thing for me. Because he’s the man who holds my heart in the palm of his hand.

•••••

REVIEW:THE VILLAINS WE MAKE is the second instalment in Natasha Knight’s contemporary, adult HEROES AND VILLAINS dark, erotic, romance duet focusing on Ophelia ‘Phee’ Hart, and Silas Cruz. THE VILLAINS WE MAKE can not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the events and cliff hanger of book one THE HEROES WE BREAK.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers. If you have not read book one, there may be spoilers in my review.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Phee and Silas) using present day and memories from the past THE VILLAINS WE MAKE follows in the wake of a series of surprise reveals, and the attempted abduction of our story line heroine. Years earlier, Ophelia grew up alongside Ethan Fox, and Silas Cruz but years of abuse and rejection at the hands of his father pushed Silas to seek out a new direction. Upon his return he discovered the woman he loved engaged to someone else, someone who was taking aim at our story line hero but beneath the surface, the secrets were dark and dangerous, and Ophelia was about to pay the price for the sins of someone else. What ensues is rebuilding relationship between Ophelia and Silas, as greed and madness threaten our story line couple.

The world building follows several pathways including the lies and secrets that surround our heroine’s life. Everything she once thought was the truth, the who and the how, are now something and something else, and in this, Ophelia Hart struggles to believe or trust the man who has always held her heart.

The relationship between Phee and Silas began as childhood friends but Silas’ life was never easy. His father’s rejections, his brother’s contempt, where but the proverbial tip of the iceberg but his need for vengeance, and his love for Ophelia Hart were the things that kept him alive. Reconnecting with Ophelia, and professing his love, would once again, place our couple in the direct line of fire. The $ex scenes are provocative and intense.

The secondary and supporting characters are colorful and dynamic, controversial and questionable. We are up close and personal with family and friends, and family members that consider themselves more worthy than others.

THE VILLAINS WE MAKE is a story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, secrets and lies, greed and jealousy, family and friendships, forgiveness and love . The premise is raw, dark and dramatic; the romance is fated and seductive; the characters are broken, desperate, and charismatic.

Description:
Bellini Weddings has agreed to allow a production company to film a movie at Red Moss Vineyards. It will be great PR for both the vineyard and the wine and wedding businesses. Mae Wallace, who works for the Bellini family, is thrilled with the possibility of new business. What she isn’t thrilled with is actor Kane August, who she finds crashing one of the weddings. He tells her it’s research for the movie, but she finds him overconfident and annoying.

Kane August is rarely surprised by anything—until he meets Mae Wallace. She’s sharp, just a bit on the snarky side, and the most refreshing woman he’s had the pleasure of meeting. She constantly challenges him, and he can’t remember having this much fun on a movie set. He takes every opportunity to spend time with her, peeling back layers until he gets to the heart of who this amazing person really is. And, unexpectedly, he realizes that he’s letting her in, too, something he hasn’t done with anyone before. However, they live very different lives and he’ll need to be careful around Mae, because she’s someone he could see a future with. But can she see the same thing?

When Kane takes her to his family’s ranch in Texas, Mae discovers a whole new side to him, learning about the heart and soul of a kind and gentle man. And as they grow closer, her guard goes up. Once burned, she has no intention of falling in love ever again, despite this very hot and sexy guy who’s trying his best to turn her world upside down and work his way through the steely wall she’s built. Kane is determined to show her he’s the one man she can trust with her heart. If only Mae will allow herself to fall.

Review:

The Backup Bride Proposal by Jaci Burton is the 4th book in her wonderful Boots and Bouquets series. The story revolves around the Bellini family’s Red Moss Vineyards; which include their winery and their wedding planning business. The Bellini family has agreed to allow the production of a movie to film at the Vineyards; as they anticipate publicity for the vineyard, winery and wedding business

Mae Wallace, our heroine, is very close to the three sisters; with Erin, handling all of the business, Brenna and her father ran Red Moss Vineyards; and Honor was the wedding coordinator, assisted by Mae. She loved everything about the wedding planning business; which is always successful.  Now that a movie production company is coming shortly, everyone thinks that Mae should be their official liaison to deal with the company. Mae enjoys her job, and now adding her to be in the front of the project, makes her feel like more of a key player.  Though Mae loves the weddings, her view of marriage has made her not planning on ever getting married, as her ex-fiancé was a serial cheater.

During the wedding event, Mae who watches over everything, sees someone who doesn’t really belong and finds him to be a crasher.  When she approaches him, he says he is here for research for the movie, and she forces him to leave. She discovers the following day, that Kane August, was indeed the crasher, and he is determined to charm her as he is enamored by her.  Kane’s costar is delayed and Mae is roped into the production as a stand-in, since her back is similar to the actress.

Slowly, Mae finds herself having fun with Kane, as she realizes that she was wrong about her first meeting with him, since he was charming, gentle and fun to be with. Kane is determined to win her over, as he too begins to enjoy Mae’s company, wanting to spend as much time with her. In a short time, both Mae and Kane’s chemistry explodes, and they both have strong feelings for each other.  Can Mae allow herself to trust and open her heart again?

What follows is a sweet wonderful romance, with a terrific couple, the fantastic Bellini family, who were such a great family.  I loved the friendship between the three sisters and Mae. I also loved how close Kane was to all the married men in the family. The Backup Bride Proposal was an enjoyable and entertaining story, especially seeing everyone. Jaci Burton has created a wonderful group of characters that are so much fun and enjoyable; with wonderful couples and family.  The Backup Bride Proposal is a wonderful romance that was fun, entertaining and sexy.  It was so very well written by Jaci Burton. If you enjoy wonderful romances, then look no further than Jaci Burton.

Grayson Tanner has had better days. Coming off the successful international launch of Hooked, the hook-up app he cofounded with his two best friends, and a night with one of the sexiest women he’s ever met, he’s now in a PR nightmare. A video of him has gone viral—a toast to the indulgence of bachelorhood. It’s a bad look for the creator of the app’s marriage arm. As memberships plummet amid a media firestorm, his PR firm has a new narrative to quell the flames: Grayson has to get married. Fast.

Hello, Jovana Winters—social media influencer and Grayson’s former one-night stand. The one-night stand he has yet to move on from mentally. Their immediate connection is undeniable. In front of the camera, they’re charismatic and passionate, and social media is calling them the It couple. But off camera, Grayson doesn’t trust women or believe in commitment.

Jovana is the opposite, a believer in love who knows what she wants. Now she’s on a mission to turn this fake marriage into the real deal, even though she’s hiding the biggest secret of them all.

But with a man like Mr. Wicked, it won’t come easy.

••••••

REVIEW:Mr. Wicked is the second in the Hooked series by Marni Mann. Reading book one (Mr. Hook-Up) is recommended, while Wicked can be read alone, Grayson is part of a trio and is introduced in book one. Wicked is an alpha, billionaire romance filled with funny characters, spicy moments and a he falls first vibe.

Grayson is living the high life. The dating app he and his close friends have designed has exploded all over the internet, now it’s time to celebrate. When Grayson sees the waitress at the bar, he knows two things. 1. She is the hottest thing he has ever seen and 2.She is unlike anyone he has ever met before. When these two meet, the room is on fire with their chemistry, think of it as lust at first sight. Jovana isn’t one for hook-ups, she believes in love, but with Grayson, their lust is potent. She throws caution to the wind and puts her trust in the chemistry they have for one another, too bad that it comes to bite her in the bum. An empty bed in the morning.

Days later Grayson’s face is plastered all over the tabloids with half a dozen different women, all stating how amazing he thinks being single is. The company takes a hit, new enrollers are at a standstill, and their company’s PR is under fire to contain the issues. Their solution? Grayson must get married, and fast. Grayson isn’t one to take things lying down so you best believe the farce of a marriage the PR people are trying to peddle to him is a no go. Finally, after much conversation, Grayson is on board with the plan. Now they must find a woman willing to marry Grayson with the current situation. And of course, who is their first choice? Jovana.

What else is there to say about Mr. Wicked other than how fantastic a read it was. Grayson and Jovana were engaging and fun to read with the perfect amount of spice and character development. Grayson’s story as to why he had his issues is addressed and Jovana really does come into herself. I’m excited to see what our last bachelor has in store for us.

This time, even the Cadre itself may not be able to stop a ticking clock that is counting down at frightening speed…

••••••••

Barb’s Review:
Archangel’s Lineage by Nalini Singh is the 16th book in her wonderful Guild Hunter series. Nalini Singh continues to amaze us with another fantastic addition to this series.  It has been ten years since Lijuan died, with the destruction having been rebuilt, and peace around the world. But now all over the world, the land begins to quake under the refuge, with buildings being destroyed, and other violent natural disasters. Jessamy and Vivek work together to uncover what is happening, as they find an old ancient language that might give them answers.

When an Ancient ancestor seems to be awakening from his sleep, Raphael will meet an archangel older than any of them; Marduk. He will explain his thoughts on why the world is falling apart.  Marduk will warn Rapheal and all of the Cadre of a darkness that needs to be fixed, or the future may not survive. All the archangels must work together to find the clues left behind by the old angelic ancestors and how to fix it.

The other part of this story revolves around Elena, whose father has a major heart attack, and may not survive.  She rushes to his bedside, spending time with her stepmother, and their kids, including her own sister, Beth. Elena begins to see signs, such as Beth’s hair turning grey, and the other kids growing up, and realizes that she will outlive all her mortal family and friends.  She is in the middle of keeping an eye on her father, but also dealing with Marduk and his suggestions to stop the destruction.

I love seeing Raphael and Elena together, as I loved their spicy scenes; as well as the love they have for each other.  It was also great to see many of our favorites, such as Illium,Aodhan, Dmitri, Jessamy, Keir, Sharine, Titus, just to name a few;  not to mention all the archangels (Cadre) who must work together to save the world.  Vivek, who is working with Jessamy, seems to play a big part in finding information on the destruction, as he also has help from a very old female vampire underworld leader, Katrina.  Where will this lead in future books?

All of the Cadre, including Elena will need to find the clues for each of them that was once used all those many years before. Marduk only knows so much, but they all will need to bring the parts together, and then Elena with help from Keir to hope that they all will survive. I will not give spoilers, so not to ruin it for you.

What follows was an exciting, intense and emotional last third of the book, with everyone pulling together.  As in just about every book I read from Nalini Singh, I could not put this book down.  I loved having so much time with Elena, with her family, as well as the love between her and Raphael.  As always, Archangel’s Lineage was so very well written by Nalini.  If you are new to the series, you should start where it all began. Nalini Singh is one of my top favorite authors, and if you are not reading her books, you need to start now.

Sandy’s Review: ARCHANGEL’S LINEAGE is the sixteenth instalment in Nalini Singh’s adult GUILD HUNTER paranormal, urban fantasy series focusing on Archangel’s, angels, vampires, shifters and hunters. ARCHANGEL’S LINEAGE follows several pathways including the ongoing relationship between Archangel Raphael and his consort Elena, as well as the collapsing infrastructure of the Refuge; a worldwide series of environmental disasters; the early sleep of a troubled Archangel, a the awakening of another, too early in time, and crumbling bonds of Elena’s human family. ARCHANGEL’S LINEAGE should not be read as a stand alone as there are numerous references to previous events and disasters.

Told from dual omniscient third person perspectives ( Elena and Raphael) ARCHANGEL’S LINEAGE follows in the wake of a series of environmental disasters in each of the Archangel’s strongholds around the globe. It has been approximately ten years since the last war and the events of the Cascade (an event that causes massive power fluctuations and other changes among the members of the Cadre), and in this, reparations and rebuilding have been at the forefront for Raphael and Elena but a meeting of the Cadre reveals an Archangel has chosen to sleep, and another may be responsible for the chaos around the world.

Meanwhile, Elena’s estranged father has suffered a life-threatening heart attack, and our heroine is battling between heart break and remorse. Elena’s father has struggled in the years since the murder of his children, and the death of his beloved wife, and in this, Elena has felt the brunt of her father’s grief, and rejection.

The world building is complex and complicated as the story line references numerous past events, and the possible connections to the current time line. All is not well with Angelkind, and in this, the Cadre of Archangels is struggling to maintain control of the vast territories, and betrayal by some of their own.

The relationship between Elena and Raphael continues to be loving , passionate and seductive. Elena is mortal yet not-Raphael sacrificed himself to save his beloved, a sacrifice that now connects our heroine to the past. The $ex scenes are limited but intense.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, powerful and energetic secondary and supporting characters, most of whom we have met in previous story lines. We are reintroduced to Elena’s extended family, as well as the introduction of Archangel Marduk.

ARCHANGEL’S LINEAGE is a story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, desperation and devotion, love and acceptance, family and love. The premise is dramatic, detailed, intricate and impassioned; the romance is heated and sentimental; the characters are compelling, authoritative, and dynamic.
