IGNITED (Most Wanted #3) by J. Kenner

ABOUT THE BOOK: September 9, 2014

For fans of Fifty Shades of Grey, Bared to You, and Release Me comes an all-new erotic series of three enigmatic and powerful men, and the striking women who can bring them to their knees.

He promised to take me as far as I could go—and I wanted to go to the edge.

My whole life has been a cover, a con, a lie. I was born into the grift, raised on the thrill of playing someone I’m not. As a rule, I never let anyone get too close—until Cole August makes it impossible for me to stay away.

Cole is tough, sexy, and intensely loyal, yet his secrets are dark and his scars run deep. Not many women can handle his past, or the truth behind his fierce demands. But something about him beckons me—and our desire is a game I must play.

I know he’s dangerous, that even his touch is trouble, but what is passion without a little risk?

••••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: IGNITED is the third storyline in J. Kenner’s contemporary, adult Most Wanted erotic romance series-a spin off from her popular Stark Trilogy-focusing on three friends who own and operate both legal and illegal businesses. This is Cole August and Katrina Laron’s storyline-two battered souls whose earlier lives couldn’t have been more dissimilar yet the same.

Told from first person POV (Katrina) the focus on the storyline is the building relationship between Cole and Katrina-one that has been simmering for a long time. Their mutual attraction to one another is tempered by Cole’s inability to let go of the past-a past that controls almost every aspect of his life and one that he doesn’t want affecting or destroying the woman with whom he is falling in love. When Katrina’s grifter father comes looking for help, Cole knows that her relationship with her dad will set into motion a spiral from which they may not return.

Katrina and Cole’s relationship is based on mutual needs. Cole is a businessman, an artist and a man with needs both in and out of the bedroom-needs that ease the demons of anger, pain and betrayal. Cole’s younger life is the stuff of nightmares and his methods of coping may be out of Katrina’s comfort zone. Cole must learn to forgive himself before he is able to let Katrina into his heart. He is numb to the world and needs to feel in order to survive.

J. Kenner pulls the reader into the world of one man whose need for control takes him into the back rooms and secret societies in the world of BDSM. We have been given very little information in previous storylines about Cole August; not about his lifestyle nor his needs. Cole’s story is fleshed from betrayal, anger, dissolution and pain. He is a man who is mired in his own guilt about what has happened and what he needs. And what he needs is Katrina Lebron-only he has yet to figure it out.

IGNITED is a thought provoking and dramatic look at how our earlier lives can shape the people we become. We think we have it all under control but in the end, we are who we are because of the past. J. Kenner writes with passion, beauty and a traumatic take on romance and love.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 26, 2014

Mac “The Snake” Hannon has spent years throwing himself into cage fighting as a way to lash back at the natural disaster that destroyed his future. A call for help has Mac returning to the one place he swore never to return: Kansas—in the height of tornado season.

There he meets free-spirited Gayle Andrews. At first he wants nothing to do with the infuriatingly, persistent woman, but the crazy challenges she tosses his way are impossible to resist. As she thaws years of bitterness, bringing back the Mac he believed long gone, he starts to make peace with the past and see the future again. Until he learns she chases his worst nightmare, then he can’t get away fast enough.

Meteorologist and storm chaser, Gayle Andrews is no stranger to being left behind and now believes in living in the moment. She wants to do just that with the handsome extreme fighter with the achingly sad eyes. As she works to replace the sorrow with desire, she finds herself breaking her one rule: have fun, but don’t fall in love. When he suddenly pushes her away and she discovers the horrifying reason why, she issues one more challenge: face his fear and come on a chase with her.

Will squaring off with the past lead to a victory for heartache or love?

•••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: WINNING LOVE is the third instalment in Abby Niles contemporary adult Love to the Extreme romance series focusing on the men of the MMA and the women that they love. This is professional MMA fighter Mac Hannon and meteorologist Gayle Andrews’s storyline. When Mac returns home to Kansas (following a four year absence) to help train his best friend Lance for his upcoming fight he was not prepared for the spitfire known as Gayle Andrews-Lance’s neighbor; sometime babysitter, meteorologist and all woman. Although this is the third book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without any problems.

The storyline follows Mac as he tries to come to terms with everything that has destroyed his life. Kansas brings with it too many painful memories of loss, heartbreak and fear. The one shining spot is his best friend’s neighbor –a woman who doesn’t take no for an answer-but a woman with secrets of her own. As Gayle endeavors to get Mac to open up she will soon discover that what she does for a living is the very thing that could send Mac back into the spiral to hell.

The relationship between Mac and Gayle begins as friends. She is the yin to his yang; she pushes Mac to step outside of his comfort zone and in doing so discovers that she is falling for the man with a heartbreaking past. The sex scenes are hot, seductive and sensual. But both Mac and Gayle know that neither one is in it for the long haul: Mac is a man who is unable to let go of the past and Gayle is a woman who has knows what Mac is trying so desperately to hide.

The world building continues as the series focuses on the men of the MMA fighting ring. When Lance enters a local competition, Mac finds himself in need of a fight to let off some aggression. What he doesn’t realize is that this fight will set into motion a series of events that could very well end his career.

WINNING LOVE is a captivating and emotional storyline where two people share more in common then they could have ever imagined. Their backstories are filled with love and loss; pain and sorrow; letting go and moving on. But only one person has been able to let go while the other still clings to a personal guilt that eats away one day at a time.

Abby Niles’s LOVE TO THE EXTREME series will captivate and compel. The romances are intimate and intense; the friendships are real; and the storylines are provocative and arousing.

The Best Kind of Trouble

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 26, 2014

She has complete control… and he’s determined to take it away

A librarian in the small town of Hood River, Natalie Clayton’s world is very nearly perfect. After a turbulent childhood and her once-wild ways, life is now under control. But trouble has a way of turning up unexpectedly—especially in the tall, charismatically sexy form of Paddy Hurley….

And Paddy is the kind of trouble that Natalie has a taste for.

Even after years of the rock and roll lifestyle, Paddy never forgot the two wickedly hot weeks he once shared with Natalie. Now he wants more… even if it means tempting Natalie and her iron-grip control. But there’s a fine line between well-behaved and misbehaved—and the only compromise is between the sheets!

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE BEST KIND OF TROUBLE is the first book in Lauren Dane’s new, adult, contemporary The Hurley Boys erotic romance series focusing the members (and brothers) of the rock group Sweet Hollow Ranch. This is Patrick “Paddy” Hurley and Natalie Clayton’s storyline-a somewhat second chance at love storyline for two people who have reconnected over coffee and home town life in Hood River.

Told from third person POV the premise focuses on the building relationship between Natalie –the Hood River librarian- and bad boy rocker and lead singer of Sweet Hollow Ranch, and home town phenom Paddy Hurley. Paddy and Natalie had spent two sex filled weeks together before the band made it big and reconnecting years later with Natalie (back in his home town) rekindles all kinds of emotions and needs in Paddy. He is a man possessed to claim Natalie as his own but Natalie has many reasons to not accept and refuse Paddy in her life.

Natalie is a product of her past. Destroyed by the actions of her parents, Natalie is not very forthcoming with Paddy. She is a woman with a history that continues to control her present and in this her actions and responses to Paddy were questionable on many levels. Natalie is quick to judge; quick to assume; and quick to run when the going gets tough-not that Paddy didn’t have some demons of his own.

Paddy lived the rock and roll life style-drugs, alcohol and women-but he has left that all behind. As he and his brothers prepare for their upcoming tour, he will begin to fall in love with a woman whose past will eventually come crashing back and into Sweet Hollow Ranch’s path. Paddy is a man who believes he should be the one to rescue and save the woman that he loves-but when he believes someone has interfered his reactions are so out of character I wondered what I had missed early in the storyline.

The secondary characters include the Hurley Boys-Damien, Ezra and Vaughan, as well as their parents-Michael and Sharon Hurley. We get a glimpse into a loving family unit that has weathered a few dark times throughout the band’s rise to fame. We are also introduced to Natalie’s former college friends and besties, including her room mate Tuesday whose story will be told when Ezra finds the woman that saves his soul.

The world building takes the reader from the past to the present; from family dysfunction to family unity; from friendship to love. We are pulled into a story where four brothers have made it big in the world of rock and roll but with it comes all of the perks and problems that one could imagine.

Lauren Dane writes a story of family love, troubled pasts and moving on. I did have a few issues with the jumpy feel of the story; the focus seem to scatter on occasion as though there something was missing. I also had a difficult time with some of the reasoning and issues our leading couple allowed to bleed into their lives. Small things seem to set them off, yet bigger issues were brushed aside as though they were expected and not unforeseen which added to the already uneasy feel of the story.

THE BEST KIND OF TROUBLE introduces four brothers whose lives have changed and are about to change once again. It is a story that reveals some of the seedier side of rock and roll, as well as the promise of greater things to come. Everyone needs a rock; an anchor; a soul mate; and The Hurley Boys series will find each of the members of Sweet Hollow Ranch find their Happily Ever After.I am looking forward to Ezra and Tuesday’s story-Broken Open (November 2014)

Power. Brute strength. Unforgettable moves. It’s no wonder Harper Gates hasn’t been able to get her fling with Gage “Savage” Ringer out of her head. Months have passed since she laid eyes—or any other body parts—on him. Months without a word of contact… until, sidelined by injury, he comes back to town.

Staying focused on his training seemed like a smart move to Gage, even if he thought about Harper every day. Seeing her again only makes it clear how much is at stake. He’s got one night to earn back her trust. One night to show her that behind his breathtaking skill and ripped body is a man who’ll give her everything she needs.

••••••••••

REVIEW: HARD KNOCKS is the prequel novella in Lori Foster’s new, adult, contemporary Ultimate romance series focusing on a group of close knit MMA fighters and the women that they love. This is Harper Gates and Gage Ringer’s storyline- a friends to lovers storyline that introduces the major players in Lori’s Ultimate series. The ULTIMATE fighter series is a spin off from Lori’s Love Under Cover series.

As with most novellas, the information provided is limited because of time and space, and in this we learn that our couple have played around one another for a number of years. When Gage is sidelined due to an injury, he takes the opportunity to tell Harper what it is he wants-and he wants Harper for his happily ever after. There is very little background information about our leading couple as the novella is used as a vehicle to familiarize the ULTIMATE series to the readers.

HARD KNOCKS introduces the men of the MMA. We get a quick look at the friends and family of the fighters who will find themselves front and center in a future book of their own. From Cannon to Armie, Denver and Stack, each of the MMA fighters has a story to tell with a bit of history, backstory and mystery about the how and why of the MMA.

Cannon Colter is quintessential hero material: chiseled jawline, shredded body—the works. He’s also the guy who rescued Yvette Sweeny from kidnappers, only to put an end to her romantic dreams. These days, she’s older, smarter, determined to face whatever life throws her way. Even the prospect of sharing a house and business with Cannon.

Cannon knew Yvette wanted him three years ago. But she was young—and some things are worth waiting for. Thrown together by her grandfather’s legacy, he realizes how deep Yvette’s scars really go, and how much danger lurks in their quiet town. As pent-up desire explodes between them, protecting her becomes the only fight that matters. And he’ll break all the rules to do it…

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: NO LIMITS is the first full length storyline in Lori Foster’s new, adult contemporary ULTIMATE MMA fighter romance series-a spin off from her popular LOVER UNDER COVER series. This is MMA fighter/ gym owner Cannon Colter and Yvette Sweeny’s storyline-a second chance at love trope. Yvette and Cannon were first introduced in the previous series following Cannon’s rescue of Yvette from serial kidnappers and rapists. NO LIMITS fast forwards three years when Yvette returns home for her grandfather’s funeral and discovers that she and Cannon have been named co-owners and heirs in her grandfather’s will. Knowledge of the original series is not necessary to the enjoyment of NO LIMITS-any necessary information is imparted when needed.

The storyline follows the developing relationship between Cannon and Yvette that began three years earlier. But the memories of that horrific time in her life have left Yvette broken in matters of the heart and in bed. Enter Cannon Colter-a lady’s man who knows a thing or two about making a woman swoon-but a man whose heart and soul are pulled towards the woman he rescued three years before. Upon Yvette’s return a series of mysterious text and phone calls puts Cannon on alert when threats against them become personal and dangerous.

The relationship between Yvette and Cannon is sensual, provocative and breathtaking as Cannon slowly builds up a level of trust so that Yvette is willing to let go. Cannon’s seduction of Yvette is nothing short of erotic and arousing as Yvette begins to lose her body and her heart to the man who saved her life years before. Theirs is an intense and passionate relationship that is fueled by history, memories and the fear of the unknown.

The secondary characters include Cannon’s fellow MMA fighters-Denver, Stack and Armie, as well as some of the characters and couples from Lover Under Cover–Rowdy Yates and Avery: Lt.Margo Peterson and Dash Riske-for a more familiar edge to the story. Armie’s revolving door of women and sex sets up a future storyline when the woman he wants is a little too close for comfort and off limits. There is also the introduction of Yvette’s best friend and business partner who draws the attention of every man (and woman) at Cannon’s gym.

NO LIMITS is a romantic storyline with mystery, suspense, action, betrayal and love. Lori Foster pulls the reader into a story where the past meets the present; where love binds two hearts; and where the hard edge of a fighter hides a softer side meant only for one woman.

Interview beige 2

TRC: Hi Lori and welcome to The Reading Cafe. Congratulations on the release of NO LIMITS and HARD KNOCKS (Introductory novella) from your new ULTIMATE
MMA fighter romance series.

Lori FosterLori: Thank you! I’m so excited about this new series – and getting to delve into the world of MMA again. NOT that the books are about fighting. They’re not. They’re about fighters falling in love and fitting romance into their training, competing, and traveling schedules. And since many of the stories contain some elements of suspense/danger, I get to showcase just how capable big, buff, capable fighters can be.

FOLLOW: Goodreads / Website / Facebook / Twitter

TRC: We would like to start with some background information for anyone who doesn’t know Lori Foster. Would you please tell us something about yourself and your style of writing?

Lori: Sure! I’ve been published since 1996. I’m not good at analyzing my own style, but I’m told I write fast-paced, character-driven, explicitly sexy romances. They’re not erotica, but they do include detailed love scenes. Always one woman, one man falling in love for a lifetime commitment. I LOVE writing from the male POV (point of view) so readers can expect a lot of that. I also love writing some elements of action and danger. Alpha men, always. Alpha women, often. I lean toward strong, independent characters. I’m a “seat of my pants” writer, meaning I don’t do much planning when I write. An idea will come to me, usually with a scene that introducing the male lead. I sit down and get it on paper, and from there he and other characters tell me what should happen next, how and when things will play out. If I try to plan anything, the characters just correct me and make me do things their way. 🙂

No LimitsTRC: NO LIMITS is the first full-length storyline in your new, adult, contemporary ULTIMATE MMA fighter, romance series focusing on a group of MMA fighters and friends. Would you please tell us something about the premise of the book and the series?

Lori: Sure. Readers met Cannon Colter, the lead hero in NO LIMITS, when he first appeared as a secondary character in the previous series, Love Undercover. I knew from the moment Cannon stepped onto the page that he’d have his own book. He’s that type of character. The Ultimate series takes place in the same area as the Love Undercover series, but now, instead of the focus being on the police station or Rowdy’s bar, it’s mostly centered around Cannon’s rec center where professional fighters mingle with neighborhood at-risk kids and amateur fighters, as well as a lot of ladies in different roles. Cannon is in NO LIMITS, and next will be Denver Lewis in HOLDING STRONG, followed by (I think – the characters are still deciding) Stack Hannigan and Armie Jacobson.

As I’ve said, the books aren’t about fighting. I’m not sure any actual competitions will be included. It’ll be more around the guys training at the rec center, dealing with the adoration of fans (specifically female fans!) and showing how real they are, that they’re good, noble guys with a lot of ability. Naturally, they’ll be super sexy. lol. For Cannon’s story, the threat comes from people in the town where they live, and from an ex-boyfriend who is the stalkerish type. He follows Yvette from California back to Ohio when she returns after her
grandfather’s death, and ends up reuniting with Cannon.

For Denver – HOLDING STRONG – Cherry has a tragic past that catches up with her just as she and Denver are finally connecting and setting off major sparks. She’s been in love with him forever, but he sees her a major flirt and he’s not the type to share. Once they do get together, he starts to realize that Cherry is a lot more than a party girl, and with more threats showing up every day he’s determined to keep her safe – even if that means moving her in.

Hard KnocksTRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular book and series?

Lori: Time (lack of) is my only difficulty. I love to write, I love MMA, I already know pretty much about the sport since I’ve been a longtime fan, I routinely attend live events both for professional competitions and more amateur bouts, and my husband and three sons are also big fans and major sources of info. The UFC (best known MMA organization) has become so mainstream that it’s super easy to find biographies, videos, audios and more on each of the more popular fighters, including training videos and diets.

TRC: What do you believe is the attraction and appeal of the MMA/Ultimate fighter to romance readers?

Lori: Well, they’re professional athletes, so there’s always that built in adoration and fandom. But unlike some athletes, their sport carries over to major capability in other situations. Throwing a ball won’t exactly help you in a bank robbery, for instance. But being able to dismantle a robber with little effort, well, that could come in handy. 🙂 Not all fighters have ideal physiques. They can be in shape, have plenty of endurance and speed, and not be a shredded specimen of muscle. Much of that is genetic. Throughout the years of watching (and loving) the sport, I’ve learned that looks can be very deceiving. If a fighter is all muscles he might look good, but if he hasn’t put enough gas in the tank, if he hasn’t conditioned himself properly, if he doesn’t know the moves or doesn’t have the heart, he’ll lose.

It fascinates me that an MMA fighter must know so many different disciplines and possess so many different skills. He has to be able to adapt, to be good at stand-up and have a good ground game. Kicks, punches, submissions… he needs to know them all.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Lori: Hmmm… There’s probably not much. I’m an open book and I’m on social media often. My awesome hubs and I have been married for over 36 years. We met the sophomore year of high school and have been together ever since. I have 3 sons and 3 grandsons. I enjoy the outdoors, boating and skiing, hiking, and I love movies – preferably horror or action. I’m deathly afraid of bugs. Almost all bugs. Even ladybugs. Even ants. ::creepy:::

But oddly, wasps or bees don’t send me into a panic. I don’t mind snakes either – unless one comes at me while I’m in the water. ::shudder::: I own two lake houses. One is for hubby and me, and the other remodeled for visitors. My kids come to visit just about every Sunday (family day) so the extra house gives them some privacy. When we’re not at the lake they usually stay 4 to 6 hours each Sunday and having lunch/dinner with us. Good times. Nothing is as important as family. I love writing more than reading.

I don’t believe in writers’ block. You just write. ::shrug::: I don’t believe in negativity. Get over it. Get happy. You can do it. I do believe in karma, and I do believe that doing for others is as much for YOU as it is for them because it makes everyone feel good.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Lori: Denver’s story, HOLDING STRONG. Almost done! And wow, that Denver is one sexy, over-sexed hunk of man. 🙂

Next will be a story for Jesse and Tonya in the Carlisle series http://lorifoster.com/connected-books/#carlisles Not sure when that’ll be out yet, but I’m behind on it. I was set to write it when I broke my elbow and had to have two surgeries – and that put a big crimp in my writing schedule. Luckily my publisher is pretty awesome and to make up for the lost 10 weeks, we put the novella on hold. We figured getting the next single title ready was more important. But now I’m getting back to it.

After that I’ll write another benefit novella (all proceeds – advance & royalty – go to a charity) that’ll include another Buckhorn character. Not sure who yet but the novella should be out in June 2015. http://lorifoster.com/benefit-books/ And then I’ll dive into Stack’s story, which I think will be the 3rd novel in the Ultimate series. 🙂 http://lorifoster.com/connected-books/#ultimate

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Lori: I have a very active Facebook page and I’m *always* giving stuff away on there. T-shirts, ARCs (advance reviewers’ copies – right now for No Limits), key chains, mouse pads, tote bags… If you haven’t yet “LIKED” my page, do so here-> Facebook

TRC: Thank you Lori for taking the time to answer our questions. Congratulations on the new ULTIMATE series. We wish you all the best.

Thank you very much!

Irresistible Force by D.D. Ayres – a Review

Irresistible ForceAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository

Description:
When adrenaline runs high, so does the force of desire…

For Shay Appleton, it’s love at first sight when a gorgeous stray dog is brought into the animal shelter where she works. She just knows he’ll make a terrific watch dog—and with an abusive ex who won’t let go, she needs all the protection she can get. But Shay never suspected that her new pet is actually a trained police K-9 named Bogart—until Bogart’s even more gorgeous, human partner shows up on her doorstep.

Officer James Cannon is one tall, strong alpha male who’s convinced that Shay stole his dog. But once he gets closer to the suspect, he realizes that this stubborn, independent woman not only needs a guard dog, she needs James as well. It seems that someone from her past is stalking her, and threatening her life. When danger meets desire, will James risk his career and his best friend…to protect the woman who’s stolen his heart?

Review:

Irresistible Force by D.D. Ayres is the first full length book in her new K-9 Rescue series. I had read and enjoyed the novella prior to reading this book. Irresistible Force can be read as a standalone, as it is a different story revolving around K-9 rescue dogs.

We meet our hero, Officer James Cannon, as he is spying on a cabin in the woods. He is looking for his kidnapped partner, Bogart, whom we learn later is a K-9 dog. You can tell immediately how much James loves his partner. When he confronts the person who has Bogart, he is very angry and reacts badly to the owner of the house.

Here we meet Shay Appleton, who tries to keep her dog, Prince away from this intruder. James is confused why Bogart is happy and friendly, but his anger is out of control, and he forcibly handcuffs Shay. After the local Deputy comes to Shay’s rescue, James learns that she adopted Prince a month ago. James calms down and listens to her story, finding it hard to believe, but then when Shay describes the person who brought the dog to the animal shelter to be euthanized, he realizes it was his ex, who kidnapped Bogart, and Shay actually saved his life by adopting him. Shay is now angry at how James handled her, and wants to press charges, since she also does not want to lose Prince, whom she has grown to love and depend on. But he is a police dog, and she is heartbroken as they leave.

James, ready to head home after signing release papers at the police station, feels somewhat bad for Shay, and passes by her cabin. He finds her being accosted, and comes to her rescue. All of this is in the beginning and this should tell you that it is an exciting action packed adventure, with what will turn out to be a wonderful romance, not to mention the cutest and smartest dog.

There are so many stories within that will keep your attention throughout. Shay has a hard luck life that causes her nightmares…from her childhood, to her stalker ex-boyfriend, a possible mob hit, among other things. She has suffered so much, that one scene nearer to the end, actually bothered me. But she had James and Bogart/Prince to help her. James has his own issues with his ex-girlfriend, her attempt to win him back, then to threaten him, will cause more grief and danger to Shay.

The romance between James and Shay rapidly grows in a sizzling relationship, with each having to overcome their major obstacles. I loved how James, who came off nasty early on, became so sweet and caring to Shay. Will James be able to help convince Shay to trust him?   Will Shay be able to stand up against her ex? Can Shay overcome all things that have happened to her in the past and trust love? If they stay together, what name will they choose for their dog…Bogart or Prince? 🙂

D.D. Ayres has created an exciting storyline that has everything you would enjoy…romance, suspense, action-packed, danger, tension, humor, great couple and a wonderful dog. I wholly recommend that you read Irresistible Force.

She is no longer free.

There are no rules. Only payments.

A modern day Dark Erotic Romance

•••••••••••

REVIEW: DEBT INHERITANCE is the first instalment in Pepper Winters’s dark, erotic, adult contemporary INDEBTED series. This is NOT your mother’s romantic fairytale. In fact there is very little romance to be had in this particular instalment. This is a story about a six hundred year old debt-one that comes due with the birth of each first born Weaver daughter-and Nila Weaver is its’ next payment. DEBT INHERITANCE is not for everybody. If you take issue with dark, tormented and controversial storylines where morality and legality tread a fine line with non-consensual sex and assault, then this book and series are not for you.

Pepper Winters is a writer who pushes the boundaries of contemporary romance. Her stories call forth such emotional and visceral reactions that it leaves the reader exhausted but wanting more. The Weaver family debt has come to fruition and Nila must pay with both her freedom and her body. Never knowing the truth behind her mother’s disappearance, Nila endeavors to survive in a world where the end result will wipe her out of existence. She is a pawn, a slave, a payment rendered for the sins of the past and she will pay with her life.

Jethro Hawk is a dominant male who will be inheriting the mantle of the Hawk patriarch on his thirtieth birthday. But at twenty nine years old he will learn his family fate and about a six hundred year old debt that must be paid-over and over again. He is a man torn between the duties of family and his need for a woman who represents a dark and dangerous past and possibly his own future.

DEBT INHERITANCE is brilliant in its presentation; controversial in topic; and sensational is its portrayal. The premise is alarming, suspenseful, heartbreaking and full of anguish for a woman who knows nothing about her family’s history but is meant to pay for the sins of the past. The imagery is distressing, destructive and tragic, and we only get a glimpse at the possibilities of what is to come.

Excerpt: Debt Inheritance: Meet Jethro & Nila

ONE – Nina’s POV

“Huge disappointment, Ms. Weaver.” His cold glare sent a snowstorm wiping away the bonfire in my belly. “I’m done playing games, so cut the bullshit. Time to begin the day.” His voice gave no room for interpretation. A cold draft shot down my back.

My brief reprieve from debts and horrible Hawks was over. I’d been shown something I desperately wanted, but denied it because I failed to please him.
“You could teach me…show me how…” I couldn’t make eye contact with him. Mortification painted my cheeks for both admitting I was clueless and asking a monster to coach me.

Jethro laughed. “You think that will save you from what’s coming? Was that your little plan? To make me f*ck you in the hopes I might feel something for you?”

******
TWO – Jethro’s POV

I stood up slowly, clicking my tongue. “Ah, ah, ah, Ms. Weaver. Don’t take that tone with me. You’re the failure. You’re the prisoner. You take what I give you. You do not assume to have any say or authority. That includes listening to everything I deem important to tell you.” Ghosting to a stop in front of her, I murmured, “Is that quite understood?”

I flexed my muscles, welcoming back the soothing chillness of control. I hadn’t liked stepping outside my confines of civility. Things got messy when silence was disrupted. Things got rushed when tempers rose and curses flowed.

And I didn’t want to rush her undoing. I wanted to savour it. Devour it.

Description:
Alexios Constantinou is notorious for his lethal charm, so when the exquisite Isabel Peters is—literally—dropped into his lap during a hellish elevator ride, he doesn’t waste the opportunity! With tensions sky-high after their near-death experience, an insatiable desire ignites between them, and all bets are off.

But when Alex discovers that reporter Isabel’s next story is him, he’s furious…yet determined to use it to his advantage. He’s calling the shots, but the closer Isabel gets, the closer she comes to discovering his carefully concealed secret. Now, with everything at stake, he’ll need a whole new game plan….

Review:

Wow!! CHANGING COSTANTINOU’S GAME by Jennifer Hayward starts out with a BANG or should I say a loud thump!!

Our elusive millionaire, Alex gets trapped in an elevator with Izzie, our tenacious reporter. Neither knows who the other is, so this trapped confinement lets them lower their guards. Alex discovers that Izzie keeps a drugstore in her purse (who doesn’t?) and her love of “smutty novels”. She makes him smile, due to her quirkiness and genuine fear of elevators. What starts out as a near death experience develops into a night of “no strings attached”!!

Wait, you didn’t think things would be that easy? Alex figures out that Izzie was sent to interview him and he feels betrayed. Both characters have major trust issues and while Izzie sits on her story, things still get complicated. This is a story of ambition, hidden secrets and most of all building trust. This novel does not follow a predictable format. There are many surprises along the way!

I have not read any of Jennifer’s other novels, but I am a new fan. Her writing is effortless and her characters soon wrap you around their fingers. Both characters are so endearing in different ways and their relationship is hot! This novel is a must read for the contemporary romance lover! I have to admit, I even shed a few happy tears at the end! Enjoy!

Shining A Light On The Elusive Alpha Hero

Alpha heroes – oh how we love them! They command and seduce us. Sweep us off into passionate tales. Stride into our pages like the larger-than-life figures they are and make us wonder why we haven’t met one at a cocktail party yet. I mean we’ve been getting out there right?

But as compelling as they are, many writers say they find the alpha male difficult to write. That that type of character just doesn’t come naturally to them. So I thought I’d tackle the subject of our sexy, scintillating alpha in this post.

I’ve been lucky in that I’ve been surrounded by alphas my entire life. First my father, an alpha surgeon, then in my career in PR where I worked with charismatic CEOs on a daily basis. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, one thing’s for sure – an alpha might be wrong, but he’s never uncertain. He is grounded in the fact that he is master of his domain and he commands it all with a firm, confident hand. In fact, there’s nothing in the world an alpha’s powerful authority and money can’t buy, except as we say in Presents land, “the love of a woman strong enough to tame him!”

So where do you find inspiration for an alpha if you don’t have one close by to study? How do you incorporate those key characteristics that make an alpha irresistible yet incorrigible all at the same time? I think of our modern-day superheroes. They all have something about them that elevates them to a level above the ordinary man. Spiderman spins his webs, Superman has his superhuman power, Aquaman can breathe under water and command the sea. Formidable? Yes. Yet all of these superheroes also have the necessary hubris that puts them in jeopardy, flaws that test their superiority. And this is what causes their problems.

If channelling a superhero is too far out for you, then think of the globe’s most powerful CEOs. Would Steve Jobs have forgotten to read a report before going into a meeting, taken no for an answer on a deal or let a competitor get in the way? I think not J He was brilliant, uncompromising and unafraid to trumpet a vision he had for what the consumer electronics industry should look like. He was, in essence, extraordinary.

For my current release, Changing Constantinou’s Game, I chose as my alpha, Alexios Constantinou, a legendary football quarterback who set the world on fire with his pro debut. A big lover of sports, I think quarterbacks are the biggest alpha of them all. How else would you step on a field and command a team of big, macho personalities with adrenalin racing through their veins? How else would you step on the field knowing at the end of the game you’ll either be a hero or the player everyone points the finger of failure at? (Not always, but you get what I mean). You have to have a certain ego to be a quarterback, you have to think you’re better than the rest. But despite being brilliant on the field, Alexios, like every alpha, has flaws that bring about his destruction. He is a wounded warrior who has never gotten over the loss of his identity when an injury ended his career. He prefers to ignore his pain and let it tear him apart inside rather than face it and move on. But the love of a good woman in my heroine Izzie might just bring him back from the darkness.

I’d love to know what you think makes an ideal alpha hero. What do you love most about them? And maybe a favourite or two?

Thanks for having me at The Reading Café! I’ve so enjoyed being here.
